Unravel: A Yarny Puzzle-Platformer Published By EA

Sandwiched between booming music, screeching wheels, and blasting guns in EA’s E3 show was a quiet and cutesy platformer named Unravel [official site], which they’ll be publishing. It stars a little doll of red yarn (named Yarny) who’s adventuring through the Swedish countryside, solving physics-based puzzles by unspooling himself to swing across gaps, fly kites, hook onto fish, and so on. It’s a bit like life, yeah?

That’s going to end in tragedy, isn’t it? Just imagine his little yarny face when only a few winds are left on his wire bones. Heartbreaking. Have a look:

Unravel’s made by small Swedish studio Coldwood. Creative director Martin Sahlin explains that he had the idea while on a camping holiday with his family, and prototyped by making a little Yarny doll then going into the woods and playing at wrapping yarn around things and putting him in interesting places. That’s nice, that.

EA didn’t announce platforms but it seems unlikely they wouldn’t release a PC version, right? EA are very good about these things. [Update: Yes, it totally is.]

This is going to be a game that makes me cry, isn’t it? Either the little yarn-cat is going to run out of yarn and die, which will cause me to blub, or it’ll look like it’s about to die only to be saved by a friend that it’s made along the way, which will make me weep like a child.

It’s only just been announced and I already hate this game for the terrible things it’s going to do to my dignity.

I so hope this will be as gorgeous as it looks. If that’s the in game music I’m already sold.

You don’t find the music in the trailer even a little bit melodramatic or contrived? Am I the only one? Okay, I’m the only one…

Definitely has a unique and alluring aesthetic to it. It’s really strange that all of these big game studios are now publishing all these “indie-like” platformers.

DEM GRAPHICS. Are they sure they put all the graphics in there? They better save some for their other titles.

I am absolutely in love with the theme.
Although its Swedish not Finnish countryside (they are really similar minus the mountains) it still reminds me of trips to my grandma’s farm when I was a kid. The yarn dolls i had, the birches and the spruces and the moss on the crags by the lakeside. I am definitely getting this.
