Atlas Reactor: Turn-Based Tactics From Trove Devs

Trion Worlds, the crew most notable for MMOs Defiance and Trove, have turned their attention to the small scale. Well, comparatively anyway. The studio’s been working on a new free-to-play,┬áteam-based, turn-based tactical combat team called Atlas Reactor [official site], an amalgamation of XCOM tactics with Overwatch aesthetic, from the look of it. Check it out for yourself after the jump.

Here’s the idea: five “Freelancers” with unique skills go head-to-head against five uniquely skilled freelancers. Each turn gives the player 30 seconds to decide their next move, which is taken by each player on their team simultaneously. You know, a bit like Frozen Synapse. As the Trion lads say a few times throughout the announcement trailer, they want to take the waiting out of turn-based gaming.

“Then why not just make it a real-time strategy game then, genius?”

Well, try to think of it as a little genetic variation. Atlas Reactor seems to have the kind heavy focus on strategy that fuels turn-based games. Fog of war means you can’t be sure what the enemy’s next move will be, complicating your plans for how to deal with them. Matches are pretty short too, expected to last between 10 and 20 minutes, and the game even supports uneven teams. You can try your hand at one-on-five, if that’s what you’re in to.

I think it looks neat, although – as expected – the trailer’s YouTube commenters are already wary of the existence of another F2P project.

Atlas Reactor is scheduled to hit October 2016.

I have a great idea for a simple reductionist version of turn based multiplayer. Each member of the team has the same of choice of weapon, rock, paper… hang on!

I love TBT, but Trion is a notoriously bad company that runs their games into the ground and threats the people giving them money like crap. I recently read that they banned someone who had spent at least $1000 in ArcheAge because he reported someone with a bot alt following them around and that botter got his whole guilt to report and ban the guy. When he tried to repeal it the GM just asked the people who reported him if he was botting and they all said yes so he’s banned. DO NOT PLAY TRION GAMES.

Trion even ran what could have been the best MMO in a long time, ArcheAge, into the ground with their F2P system and lack of care of the game. DO. NOT. PLAY. TRION. GAMES.

tbh idc who is running this. It could be EA teaming up with Ubisoft and I would still give it a go. Simultaneous turn based combat is fun.

I don’t think this kind of clearly half-informed hearsay is really worth repeating here. Especially with this type of presentation.

It should be a 21 page powerpoint slide deck with animation and a list of no fewer than 8 but no more than 16 peer-reviewed references :(

I like the concept. Hate The cartoon look. Hope the mobile bling bling look does not spill over the gameplay.

What about Rift? I haven’t played it since it went FreeToPlay, but that was a pretty enjoyable ememoharrpeegee when it came out.

    • piercehead says:

Exactly what I was going to say. Rift was spectacular and definitely head-and-shoulders above the likes of Defiance.

  5. Holderist says:

I like the aesthetic and characters, it’s like what if Borderlands wasn’t on Pandora, and it was a turn based tactical game.

But it’s some free-to-play multiplayer competitive thing.

I’m trying to imagine this improving on Frozen Synapse and I’m not convinced. We’ll see, I suppose. :)

    • Kitsunin says:

It doesn’t need to in the least. Frozen xxx are the only games in an entire subgenre. Direct competition is utterly unnecessary.

  7. Sian says:

Why five players per team? Do that many people have five friends who relatively often all have time to play games together? Because playing most competitive games with random people … It’s not the best experience.

    • pepperfez says:

But do you have any idea how much money Riot makes?! It’s the best experience for the people who count.

  8. Kitsunin says:

Oh hang on, I just reread the article. October…2016. Woah, that’s uh…I couldn’t care less? About literally any game that far into the future?
