The Complete Dote Night

Part of a miscellany of serious thoughts, animal gifs, and anecdotage from the realm of MOBAs/hero brawlers/lane-pushers/ARTS/tactical wizard-em-ups. One day Pip might even tell you the story of how she bumped into Na’Vi’s Dendi at a dessert buffet cart*.

Hello!

It’s time for some Dote Night real talk:

To get to the point fast, Dote Night as a column is going on hiatus BUT writing about cool or weird things in MOBA-land is still part of what I do at RPS. Coverage of the games and tournaments isn’t stopping and I’m still playing matches myself, but after more than a year I need a break from the column format because I can feel I’m starting to burn out on it. As a result this post marks the end of this run of Dote Night.

I’ve created an index of all of the entries below with links and descriptions so you can have a potter round the archive if you fancy.

Before I sign off I just wanted to say this, though:

I’ve had games I poured dozens, maybe hundreds, of hours into before Dota and League of Legends and Smite but MOBAs were the first time games went from being single-player experiences cut off from other aspects of my life to part of my life. I’ve made friends through them, found work through them, traveled to different continents because of them, been utterly furious with them and cried in massive arenas because of them.

My sincere hope with this column is that it shared a little bit of that excitement with you, whether you played or not.

    Dammit.

If Pip wont talk, maybe Dendi will. We’ll set a trap. All we need is a dessert buffet cart, a box, a stick and some string. Solo mids can’t resist free confectioneries.

We’ll leave an almost-finished trifle out in the open and move in when he goes to deny it.

  4. Lord Custard Smingleigh says:

Dote Night has been the antidote to all the “SAUSAGES*? Bah!” sentiments I see so often. Thank you for your celebration of all that is good and silly and fun in the genre. I’m so glad that it isn’t the end of your vitally important “Reporting From Inside An Oversized Promotional Bag” coverage.

    * “Strategic Area Under Siege: Attack Groups of Enemy Soldiers”, the genre known to the unwashed as MOBA.

    • King Trode of Trodain says:

SAUSAGES are excellent, especially while you are jungling, for they are portable and easy to cook over a fire.

I haven’t touched a MOBA since Warcraft III was new, but I still liked to read this column.

    Aw, now I’m sad.

Thanks for the column! I didn’t read all of your writings, but they were certainly highly appreciated.

That’s a lot of great articles. Thanks for all the hard work Pip.

Loved reading your articles, you gave me the smile on those sad working days :)

  10. Vandelay says:

Thanks for the articles Pip. I will be sorry to see it go, but I feel that it has served it’s purpose now. Before Dote Night, I would not expected any MOBAs to appear on RPS, except for the odd bemused “well, this is a thing,” style reportage. Now it is quite normal for new hero releases, balance changes and tournaments to be front page RPS news and there is only a few “talk about something I like!” comments.

Understandable that you’d burn out when you have to find something to write about every week. It’s proably better like this, I mean, you’re still going to write about when something interesting happens in MOBA-land, seems like a better approach than having a set column.

  12. TehK says:

Although your reasons are very understandable, I’m having a sad face right now.

Seriously, this was (in my opinion) one of the best columns on RPS, simply because you managed to show the good, brilliant and fun parts of a game that a lot of people immediately only associate with having a “toxic community”.

Still, I’m very much looking forward all the Dotes coverage that’s hopefully still to come ;)

  13. trn says:

Just a randomer saying thanks for the columns (can’t believe its been a year?!)

Incidentally, does anyone else know why I can’t log into the site to post comments on Firefox?

Comment posted using *gulp* Internet Explorer…

Are you using some kind of addon that block sites, like noscript or adblock? I can log in with Firefox no problem. Maybe try updating it?

  14. Stevostin says:

    Pip,

I like Dota 2 but the real reason I read it is your writing. It doesn’t matter what you write about as long as you keep it up. No doubt you will :)

Enjoy the rest. What’s next ?
