Worlds Adrift Trailer Flies In More Gameplay Footage

Worlds Adrift [official site] is a game I primarily knew as “the thing with skyships and grappling hooks”. There’s a new trailer, though and it has bits and bobs of gameplay footage in amongst the sweeping camera shots of clouds and floating islands. I’ve also had a little look at the lore of the game so here’s what I now know:

So, a scan of press releases tell me that the whole thing is an MMO set amongst the remains of a planet (or maybe a few planets?) which were destroyed via overmining of a levitating mineral. I’m guessing there’s still some left given the planetary remains form floating islands, though. Ah, yes:

“All that remains of the planet surface are the thousands of floating islands still rich in the precious mineral and scattered with artefacts from many lost civilisations.”

What you’re doing in all of this seems to be exploring with the aim of discovering schematics and other practical help for your skyship building as well as digging into the story of the worlds and how they came to be like this.

Watching the trailer, I realise I’d thought it would be more of a Banjo Kazooie Nuts & Bolts kind of vehicle assembly, but there seemed to be people working to hoist parts from an island to the deck of the ship rather than simply clicking and dragging.

Maybe it’s a bit of both as this earlier dev blog seems to suggest it’s more of a traditional crafting experience but with a physics-y component in that you end up with products in the environment instead of in an inventory.

I don’t believe Worlds Adrift has a release date or a vague release window yet. You can register for “exclusive access” but although the register section says “be the first to play the game” I don’t think that’s a guarantee of access. I read it more as an option that gives you first refusal on the game, especially as the rest of the registration bonuses seem to be more about being on mailing lists, joining the forum and reserving your name. That said, Bossa (yes, the devs known mostly for Surgeon Simulator) haven’t decided on the pricing model for the game yet so it could always end up as free-to-play.

Why am I still typing?

I had high hopes for this one, and I was sure they wanted to make a game with multiplayer. Then suddenly I saw “MMO” and all hope droppped into the void. I swear this wont end well as MMO!

Looks like it could be a lot of fun. Also very pretty even at this stage of development. Not sure about the “MMO” designation as that can come with a lot of baggage, but understand why they’ve done it. I do hope there will be enough opportunities for exploring and stuff in a one-person skiff, I’d be messing about on big ships as well, but wouldn’t want to do it all the time.

The beauty of flying, the joy of a construction site with a bottomless pit underneath your feet, puffy clouds and randomized islands to hop around with a bungee cord.
    This might be amazing!

They really need to get these game names right. :)
