Astroneer’s Planetary Survival Sure Looks Pretty

Sometimes game news is that a trailer came out. Sometimes game news is that a game came out. Sometimes game news is just look, look at it, look at the pretty thing, look, look it looks nice, I like how it looks.

Hey look! It’s Astroneer [Twitter page], a game about exploring big procedural planets with a dune buggy and a thing that deforms the terrain and look at it look.

I don’t know what better service we could provide than finding nice things to look at and then helping you to look at them.

Astroneer is about building a base on the kind of remote planets seen above and is currently in pre-alpha, meaning it likely has a ways to go before it’s something you can play or strand Matt Damon within.

Okay, I’m sold… give it to meee

  2. raiders says:

Explore “big procedural planets” – Eh.
    Build a base – Ehh.
    Uncover hidden items – Ehhh.
Ride around in a rover – Ehhhh.

    What else can we do?

    • noodlecake says:

I thought that too. Lovely aesthetic though.

    • robotslave says:

Fear not, I have it on good authority that each and every rock on the planet will have a comments box allowing you to insult the rock and demand that it be more entertaining.

You’ll be glued to your computer, mark my words.

    • jonahcutter says:

That’s plenty “to do”, if those things are built to be compelling themselves.

    • hamilcarp says:

What else can you do? You can play another game that caters to your specific interests.

    • mukuste says:

I was just about to post a sarcastic “but where is the gameplay?!” comment but see that the community has already gotten there.

  3. daver4470 says:

er, I mean, very interesting… hmm, yes, quite….

  4. Challenger2uk says:

Looks cool, will eagerly wait in anticipation.

  5. Eight Rooks says:

    Ooooh. Purdy.

Also, developers, if you’re reading this, just a thought – for the love of God, someone show Randall Munroe (of XKCD) this now, now, now. This has got to be his fantasy game made flesh, unless it’s, I don’t know, not science-y enough or something.

    • hamilcarp says:

Yeah, not enough numbers or deconstructions of modern romance.

  6. Kollega says:

What these graphics remind me of is that someone really, really should make a game with graphics like the immortal Sheep, Dog ‘n’ Wolf. What wouldn’t I give for a Crimson Skies-y roguelike-type game with such an art style.

  7. Jay Load says:

“Even in pre-alpha of ASTRONEER, the planets are really massive.”

Really? RODINA would like a word…

  8. SuicideKing says:

    I keep reading “ASTROSTONER”

    • Geebs says:

I keep reading “defamation tool”, which makes me think the game is about Twitter.

How dare you defame one of our media’s greatest institutions.

  9. Lord Custard Smingleigh says:

I wish to partake of this electronic entertainment.

  10. caff says:

That does look pretty. I’m amazed that more games developers don’t make more use of un-normalised meshes.

  11. slerbal says:

That looks very pretty. My only question would be: what do you actually do in the game? personally I hope the answer is something like “uncover a great mystery” and not “survive” as I think I may be done with survival games now.

  12. racccoon says:

The game looks well designed & thought s go to a good team in the mix.
I wonder if this is a relation.. link to may of been early development, I doubt it though lol “)

  13. jonahcutter says:

It looks beautiful, and huge. Hope they can craft compelling experiences to go along with the looks and size.

  14. emotionengine says:

I think the aesthetics and theme are reminiscent of Autocraft: link to

  15. NephilimNexus says:

As burned out as I am on survival games, this still looks interesting. The genre may has stayed it’s execution for another month.

  16. Gilly says:

Posting a bunch of twitter things is journalism now?
