Dota 2 Recruits Fallout’s Mr Handy As Announcer

After getting the Rick and Morty announcer pack treatment back in August, Dota 2 [official site] will receive a Fallout 4 crossover courtesy of the series’ three-armed mechanical waiter Mister Handy.

Simply purchasing Fallout 4 on Steam gets you access to the Mister Handy-led “limited time offer” Fallout 4 announcer pack. It’ll be made available by “mid-November”, shortly after Fallout 4’s November 10 release date. Anyone who buys Fallout 4 before the end of November will get the announcer pack. One assumes it’ll also be sold separately.

Mister Handy, then, joins not only Rick and Morty but the likes of Portal’s sentient droid-cum-overseer GLaDOS and the distinguished Kevan Brighting as The Stanley Parable’s narrator.

As of yet, we have nothing to hear from Mister Handy in Dota, so let me share with you this video of him/it reciting Sara Teasdale’s 1920 poem There Will Come Soft Rains – my favourite of his many Fallout appearances:

Since it’s the weekend, I’m going to take the liberty of sharing the verse in old fashioned text-form, should you wish to recount it alongside our automaton companion (1940’s English public broadcaster dialect optional):

There will come soft rains and the smell of the ground,
And swallows circling with their shimmering sound;

And frogs in the pools singing at night,
And wild plum trees in tremulous white,

Robins will wear their feathery fire
Whistling their whims on a low fence-wire;

And not one will know of the war, not one
Will care at last when it is done.

Not one would mind, neither bird nor tree
If mankind perished utterly;

And Spring herself, when she woke at dawn,
Would scarcely know that we were gone.

Well said, Handy. And well said reader, if you joined in too.

    they really don’t like good announcer do they?

    Why not put stuff in like i dunno…SHODAN maybe

    ffs is it because of the new gamer they keep adding really bad stuff in all our game today?hell even claptrap would be better then this…why is this a thing anyway?!?since when did mr handy become iconic or good in any way

      Keep shoutin’ at that moon, buddy.

      Yes because Valve has the rights to SHODAN so can just click their fingers and make it happen, right?

      All the Announcers in Dota2 are from recent games and franchises. A lot of them have been released as a form of mutual advertising for a certain game on steam, others are simply from fans of Dota2 being able to get in contact with the guys behind a series and setting up the meeting to get everything rolling (Pyrion Flax with Rick & Morty for example).

      System Shock 2 is 16 years old. Could the original VA even pull the voice off now? If not, do they really want to recast it? You know exactly how gaming communities are. If it isn’t perfect, if it sounds different then they will leap on it as being a cash in with no reason behind it.

      Yeah, they don’t like good talent at all, that’s why they got Bastion’s narrator too. Hard to sink lower than that.

    Is the reciting of the poem a reference to Ray Bradbury’s excellent short story “There Will Come Soft Rains” (as ? The house feels very similar. Or I am overinterpreting again. Also this has nothing to do with the article. Apologies.
