Boo! Dota 2 Celebrates Halloween In Haunted Colosseum

The special seasonal event modes Valve create for Dota 2 [official site] are slightly less novel now that all and sundry can make their own modes, but Valve’s are always jolly fancy. If you fancy a good Spooky Week spooking, venture into their the Haunted Colosseum. Diretide begone! Haunted Colosseum is a 5v5 point capture mode in a new map with deadly traps and nasty pumpkinmonsters, and it’s out now.

Entering the Haunted Colosseum, teams will fight over control points which grant a steady flow of points. The more they control, the faster the points come in, and the first to 5,000 wins. A little comeback aid comes when your enemy scores 1,000 points, spawning honking great Behemoths that’ll help you by stomping around murdering people. Making all the capturing and chasing more complicated are traps players can trigger, like giant murderpendulums scything across control points, and mouths in walls spewing poison or fire. Some are triggered by switches and some simply by touch, so good luck with that.

You can download Haunted Colosseum from the Steam Workshop and play it through the Custom Games section. Pop-ups will helpfully remind you of all this the first time you launch Dota 2 after updating anyway. Yesterday also brought a patch making the Custom Games section friendlier, changing Low Priority queue games from All Random mode to Single Draft (god, what hell that must have been – I’m glad I never experienced it), and more.

Here’s Valve’s vid showing the highlights of a round:

Or for a full round, here are those DotaCinema folks playing. I’ve only watched a bit, but I imagine they say some naughty words so beware if you’re in polite company:

Minor mistake: You don’t get behemoths for every 1000 points, your opponents get them instead as a kind of comeback mechanic.

  2. Bakuraptor says:

The event itself is quite exciting and enjoyable, but what’s even better about the update is the fact that Valve’s introduced both new features (pendulums, spike traps, and so on) as well as 800 or so newly recorded voice lines for use in custom games: things which can be used, for example, in protect the VIP-type games, in games with more than 2 teams, and so on. It’s a very nice feature for Valve to have thought of and brought in for free.

Is this a joke u gotta be kidding me we had so epic events before and now this not only that it is just a simple custom maps (there are much better than this one on steam so its not counting as event). They write this “Haunted Colosseum. Diretide begone!” seriusly u think this this fail can be as good as Diretide NO FREAKIN WAY

  4. busdriver_jow says:

Don’t you f**king DARE say, “Diretide begone!” This move is a mockery and a farce, and a blight on the ever-downwardly-spiraling cacophony of blunders from Valve – truly showing how many f**ks they give, in listening to what their loyal paying fan-base genuinely wants and ask for. This had very much better be a poorly-tasted troll out of Valve pre-emting the surprise release of the actual highly anticipated, requested, and promised “ANNUAL” DIRETIDE event coming out tomorrow. ༼ つ ◕_◕ ༽つ༼ つ ◕_◕ ༽つ༼ つ ◕_◕ ༽つ༼ つ ◕_◕ ༽つ

      Poe’s law.

Is it really a Poe’s Law situation? I’m certain it’s serious, with only meme repetition adding the possible sense of “farce”.

  5. Horg says:

Diretide will always have a place in my heart thanks to that one game where, playing as Witchdoctor and being the last man standing on my team, I was able to win the game in the last 30 seconds defending our candy bucket with a rampage off a well placed Aganims Death Ward. Diretide as a game mode, however, was dull as bricks. This looks like much more fun, and shall be declared superior if I get a 5 man pendulum kill.

Edit: if you get stuck trying to download the Colosseum from inside the DotA 2 client, check your steam settings > downloads tab and make sure you have ”allow downloads during gameplay” ticked. Restart steam and DotA 2, then the download should work.
