AssCreed Chronicles 2.5D Spin-Offs Conclude Jan/Feb

Assassin’s Creed seems to be how Ubisoft ended up channeling their Prince of Persia-y urgings, taking the parkour-o-fighting from the platformer’s 3D outings into open worlds with some shite about aliens, but it’s sorta looped all the way back around. The spin-off Assassin’s Creed Chronicles is subseries of side-on platformers, see. AssCreed Chronicles: China arrived in April, and now Ubi have announced release dates for the other two chapters, India and Russia.

They’re set in different times, starring different Assassins, and I do like how they reflect this with different art styles. That propaganda poster-y Russia looks pretty nice. India is coming on January 12th, 2016, then Russia will follow on February 9th. I wonder why the wait was so long after China when these two are arriving so close to each other. I suppose Ubi might have wanted a clear Creedgap around Syndicate? Mysteries!

Anyway, India goes down in 1841 while Russia’s set at the start of the 20th century, around the time of the revolution. More details and picture are in Ubi’s announcement but basically, you’re an Assassin tied up in historical events and the Templars are bad so you run and jump and climb and kill them. I didn’t play AssCreedChron China myself but heard it was… okay? Competent? Not up there with Mark of the Ninja for stealthy murderplatforming, certainly.

Made by Climax Studios, AssCreedChron India and Russia will cost $9.99 apiece. A retail release with all three AssCreedChrons is also due on February 9th at $29.99.

Competent describes the China game well. It’s a decent Mark of the Ninja clone, generally prettier but with fewer interesting systems. Not bad, not great, fun while it lasts.

I wish we had more games set in India: I don’t remember a single great one other than NOLF and some random levels in Call of Duty. Although I suppose Far Cry came closest with their pretty awesome depiction of Nepal. I guess we’ll just have to wait until Indian game development studios come of age…

I’m definitely buying AssCreed Chronicles: India though. Got to show them that there is interest.

There a game on Steam called Unrest that is based around Indian history and myths and is set in a kind-of-India. I know that’s not much, but that’s still something!

      • RaunakS says:

Oh yes, I had completely forgotten about Unrest! I had even backed it on KS, and one of the folks responsible (Arvind, I think) was around RPS quite a lot. Thanks for reminding me!

Though I remember not liking the aesthetic quite so much while playing, but oh well.

Now I’m just imagining a stealth mission where Gandhi is scolding you over some kind of steam punk earpiece for killing guards.

I liked China, but it’s a far cry from the excellence of Mark of the Ninja.
