The PC Games Of 2016

Everything to look forward to on PC in the new year.

Featured post

Roguelikes

And roguelites, roguelikelikes, and all other derivations of Rogue, the dungeon crawling permadeath RPG which is still experiencing a modern renaissance. The definition of this genre is somewhat contentious, so don’t expect slavish devotion to any given feature, but as a whole these games seem to share most in common with those once ASCII-only experiences.

Everspace

Official site

Genre
Roguelike, Space, Shooter
Release date
Q4 2016
What is it?
A pickup-and-play entry into the ever-burgeoning space-em-up genre that promises roguelike mechanics and “nonlinear storytelling”. Everspace was successfully crowdfunded last year to the tune of €420,252 after asking for just €225,000, so expect to see more as we head into 2016.

Cryptark

Official site

Genre
Roguelike, Shooter
Release date
TBA 2016
What is it?
Don the role of a heavily armed privateer tasked with boarding procedurally-generated spacecrafts; blasting your way through enemy turrets, sentries, shields, and whichever other gadgetery fills thier sci-fi-inspired corridors; and destroying each vessel’s core, before moving onto the next. Made by the same folks that gave us the Grecian god-fighting and aesthetically pleasing Apotheon.

Cogmind

Official site

Genre
Early Access, Roguelike
Release date
TBA
What is it?
An ASCII sci-fi roguelike with a GUI to help make it playable without an hour’s reading, Cogmind is an impressive merging of old and new school game design. Green-on-black colouring gives a low-fi feel while additional colours only show up at moments of high action.

Delver

Official site

Genre
First-Person, Early Access, Roguelike
Release date
TBA
What is it?
An unusual take on the pixelated retro-looking roguelike in that it’s first-person. That aside, Delver is very much a roguelike in the genre’s traditional sense as you hunt gold, kill baddies and down potions and turkey legs from fallen foes. Delver hit Early Access way back in the latter half of 2013 with an still currently unspecified final release date.

Catacomb Kids

Official site

Genre
Platformer, Roguelike, Early Access
Release date
TBA
What is it?
Sort of like Spelunky with its in its traps and bats and bombs and procedural platforming, but set in medieval dungeons with far greater onus on some pretty sophisticated RPG-style stats and leveling. Although in Early Access, Catacomb Kids is another member of the It’ll Be Done When It’s Done club. Here’s hoping that’s this year.

Path To The Sky

Official site

Genre
Platformer, Roguelike
Release date
TBA 2016
What is it?
Lovely, rather quaint looking roguelike with tonnes of wall-hopping and shooting things with a bow and arrow. It gets progressively more challenging as you clamber your way up its levels and a day and night cycle swaps more vicious enemies in and out, depending on the time of day.

Basingstoke

Official site

Genre
Stealth, Roguelike
Release date
TBA 2016
What is it?
Tongue-in-cheek “British humour” game where you’re asked to fight off hordes of aliens with makeshift and improvised weaponry in a bid to escape the Hampshire town of Basingstoke at all costs. It looks great and is in no way meant to offend Basingstokians (Basingstokites? Basingstokers?), as Puppy Games’ director Caspian Prince once told the Basigstoke Gazette.

Curious Expedition

Official site

Genre
Survival Game, Early Access, Roguelike
Release date
TBA 2016
What is it?
Steer all of your favourite historical explorers – like Tesla and Curie and Darwin and more – and discover new lands, meet natives, and survive dinosaur attacks. Behind the humour lies engaging party-based systems for your to sink your pixelated roguelike-loving teeth into.
