Adventure games

Adventure games are where fans of pointing and clicking seek out their next love, but it’s also an increasingly diverse genre, shucking off the old control methods in favour of games which simply focus on story, character and exciting journeys.

Sherlock Holmes: The Devil’s Daughter

Official site

Genre
Adventure
Release date
Q2
What is it?
The eighth entry to Frogware’s Sherlock Holmes series introduces five new cases for Sherley and Watty to wave their well-worn magnifying glasses over and sink their inquisitive teeth into. Puzzles are matched by “fast-paced action” sequences, apparently, as you seek to halt Victorian London’s criminal cohort from its vast and explorable streets.

Where the Water Tastes Like Wine

Official site

Genre
Adventure, strategy?
Release date
TBA
What is it?
Upon first spotting Where The Water Tastes Like Wine Adam aptly described it as “like a collision between 80 Days, Van Gogh and Kentucky Route Zero”, which is to say: it looks damned gorgeous. It’s a game about travelling, exploring and storytelling inspired by classic literature such as Twain’s The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Steinback’s Grapes of Wrath and Kerouac’s On the Road.

Oxenfree

Official site

Genre

Release date
15 January 2016
What is it?
A stylish 2.5D adventure game from ex-Telltale and Disney devs about a group of teenagers who happen upon the supernatural while partying on a deserted island. The premise sounds rather twee, but with no dedicated cutscenes and a neat Telltale-inspired chat interface – where engaging in conversation at all is apparently optional – Oxenfree sounds interesting.

The fifth and final planned instalment to the 3D adventure exploration episodic series. Although its billed as Dreamfall Chapters: The Longest Journey, each entry has released between three and five months apart meaning it hasn’t really felt like a long journey at all. Going by this logic, Book 5 might be with us by Spring.

In a shorter, punchier interpretation of Groundhog Day, 12 Minutes is a top-down real-time adventure game where you influence events inside, yup, 12 minute timeframes. The whole thing takes place in a three-roomed apartment whereby a series of compromising scenarios force snap decisions before the loop starts over. February 2016
What is it?

Genre
Adventure, Point ‘n’ Click
Release date
TBA 2016
What is it?
The first Samorost point and click adventure game since 2005’s Samorost 2, number 3 looks positively stunning. Guiding you through a woodland world with strange beings and living landscapes, it appears to resemble a combination of Guillermo Del Toro’s Pan’s Labyrinth and a late 90s Nickelodeon cartoon.

Dollhouse

Official site

Genre
Horror, Adventure
Release date
TBA
What is it?
Dollhouse is a strange film noir-esque, monochromatic game about self-exploration that asks you to “delve deep into your mind to unravel the truth.” Unfortunately, that’s coupled with the grim caveat that you should “beware that your own conscience is hunting you down, with a twist that allows you to see through its eyes at a deadly cost.” Gulp.

Ladykiller In A Bind

Official site

Genre
Visual Novel
Release date
TBA 2016
What is it?
To give Christine Love’s latest offering its full title – “My Twin Brother Made Me Crossdress As Him And Now I Have To Deal With A Geeky Stalker And A Domme Beauty Who Want Me In A Bind!!” – is not only a hell of a mouthful but also a bit of an SEO nightmare. Sticking to its shorthand form, Ladykiller In A Bind is an erotic visual novel about social manipulation.
