The PC Games Of 2016

Everything to look forward to on PC in the new year.

MMOs

MMOs seemed briefly to dominate the industry, as every publisher rushed to corner a piece of the market World of Warcraft had uncovered. Not anymore. Now MMOs are few and far between, mostly expansions, and mostly imported from Korea or China. Still, if what you crave are group raids and hotbars, there are a few to watch.

World of Warcraft: Legion

Official site

Genre
MMO, RPG
Release date
September 21st 2016
What is it?
The sixth expansion to breach the esteemed MMO’s shores that will raise the existing level cap from 100 to 110. There’s a new continent named the Broken Isles, and a new hero class called Daemon Hunter. There’s orcs – obviously – and new raids and new dungeons – double obviously – and there’s also a new honour system. Neat.

Shroud Of The Avatar: Forsaken Virtues

Official site

Genre
Early Access, RPG, MMO
Release date
TBA 2016
What is it?
Richard Garriott’s successfully Kickstarter-funded fantasy RPG that echoes Ultima in its choice-laden delivery, and that now resides on Steam Early Access. It’s been a slow process so far – a fact that’s angered some players – thus it remains to be seen if Shroud Of The Avatar: Forsaken Virtues will deliver.

Warhammer 40,000: Eternal Crusade

Official site

Genre
MMO, Shooter
Release date
TBA 2016
What is it?
Four factions are at war in this – deep breath – online multiplayer third-person squad-based tactical shootery doo-dah. More importantly, it’s a Warhammer 40,000 MMO that’s been threatening to dip its war-torn toes into Early Access for quite some time but is yet to do so. Maybe this is the year.

EverQuest Next/Landmark

Official site

Genre
MMO, Early Access, Creative
Release date
TBA
What is it?
Whereas EverQuest Next is the third entry to the EverQuest series, it’ll be split two ways: a vanilla flavoured quest-based MMO endeavour on one side; and a world-building tool that’ll let you tear up the voxel playground any way you like on the other – the latter of which is named Landmark.

World of Diving

Official site

Genre
MMO, First-Person, Early Access
Release date
TBA
What is it?
Strap on your scuba gear and plunge into depths in this VR-optional “exhilarating underwater adventure”. World Of Diving is a combat-less multiplayer game about exploring the ocean floor, uncovering real-world wreckage, and undertaking missions such as hunting treasure, tracking marine life and surviving real life disaster simulations.

Armored Warfare

Official site

Genre
MMO, Simulation, Online, Shooter, Early Access
Release date
TBA
What is it?
Obsidian’s answer to World Of Tanks – in that there’s loads of, you know, tanks – with tonnes of customisation, five vehicle classes, and some very cool PvE missions. Given Obsidian’s RPG heritage there’s a story that’s set in the not too distant future, war fuels economic and political chaos, and vice versa.

Lineage Eternal

Official site

Genre
Action RPG, MMO
Release date
TBA
What is it?
Born in 1998, the Lineage series is almost old enough to buy itself cigarettes and go drinking in most parts of the world. It may be more popular Eastward, but that doesn’t stop us looking forward to the latest and third series entry, Eternal, which marks the first South Korean-styled Lineage fantasy MMORPG since 2003.

Crossout

Official site

Genre
MMO, Driving
Release date
TBA
What is it?
A post-apocalyptic vehicular combat MMO from the same mob that brought us War Thunder and the oft-forgotten (but worth remembering) IL-2 Sturmovik: Birds Of Prey. There’s not too much to go on as yet, however the little we have seen looks promising.
