Everything to look forward to on PC in the new year.

Platformers

Platformers are about more than simply leaping between different platforms. They’re also about climbing, swinging and grappling between different platforms, and often about manipulating time, cloning yourself, manipulating large physics apparatuses, and some of the best puzzle design in all of gaming.

Unravel

Official site

Genre
Platformer, Puzzle
Release date
February 9 2016
What is it?
Yarny is a little doll-like figure made of red yarn who uses the loose parts of his body to traverse Unravel’s puzzles that lay within the its beautiful interpretation of Swedish countryside. That sounds wonderful, doesn’t it? From what we’ve seen, it looks wonderful too.

The Other Brothers

Official site

Genre
Platformer, Action
Release date
May 2016
What is it?
Super Mario-like platformer wherein two mechanics, not plumbers, run and jump around a darker, mob-run cityscape world with far less mushrooms and goombas. It’s been on mobile devices for a while now, where it’s racked up many a plaudit for its sophisticated gameplay that extends beyond its second hand facade.

Mighty No. 9

Official site

Genre
Platformer
Release date
February 9 2016
What is it?
Having successfully surpassed $4,000,000 in crowdfunding, the Keiji Inanfune-produced Mighty No. 9 is Megan Man in all but name and is also being made by an “all-star team of veteran Mega Man devs”. The hype, budget, and large fan interest means expectations are high with this one.

Rain World

Official site

Genre
Platformer
Release date
TBA 2016
What is it?
A sidescroller about clambering up polls, pouncing from ledges and shimmying through rainwater pipes as you take control of a travelling cat-slug hybrid referred to as, originally, a slugcat. Fend for your life and hunt to survive as you scour a stunning rainswept labyrinth of alleyways, sewers and rooftops.

Moonman

Official site

Genre
Platformer
Release date
Early 2016
What is it?
Cutesy Terraria-styled buildy, crafty, procedurally-generated-y affair. Moonman is ambitious and its devs compared its scope to other successful, randomly-spun adventures such as Spelunky, Minecraft, Knytt Stories and Binding Of Isaac as during the game’s successful Kickstarter campaign. Unlike the aforementioned, however, Moonman directs you towards an explicit goal: to find moon fragments and shed light on the game’s perpetually nocturnal world.

Night In The Woods

Official site

Genre
Platformer, Adventure
Release date
TBA 2016
What is it?
Adam described himself as “smitten” when he first stumbled across Night In The Woods at E3 a couple of years back. Its lovely animations might have you feeling the same way, but beneath its pretty aethstetic lies an intriguing tale about a bunch of anthropomorphic animals dealing with depression, class conflict, and mental health, among other – perhaps unexpectedly – complex themes.

Move Or Die

Official site

Genre
Platformer, Online, Early Access
Release date
TBA 2016
What is it?
A fast-paced online multiplayer puzzle-cum-party game where your health drains if you remain stationary for too long. This in turn means, believe it or not, you must move or die. The rules change with each round, meaning quick thinking becomes as important as quick movement.

How To Be A Tree

Official site

Genre
Platformer, Puzzle
Release date
TBA
What is it?
An entertaining puzzle platformer about understanding contortionism and physics while navigating a trap-laden landscape of lasers and huge snapping teeth among other deadly obstacles. Sadly not a Being A Tree For Dummies guide book, but a lot of fun nevertheless.

All How To Be A Tree posts.

Radio The Universe

Official site

Genre
Platformer, RPG
Release date
TBA 2016
What is it?
This time last year we noted updates following Radio The Universe’s successful crowdfunding campaign had become few and far between. The intervening period sadly hasn’t changed much; however the futuristic open-world, bullet-storming, dungeon crawler did receive a dev update in late November that reassured Kickstarter backers the game is still being developed. “Thanks for being patient people,” the update signed off with.

Cuphead

Official site

Genre
Platformer, Puzzle
Release date
TBA 2016
What is it?
Besides its absolutely cracking name, Cuphead is also a game that’s (almost surprisingly) made in Unity that echoes the animated cartoons of the early 20th century. So far, all we’ve seen of this run ‘n’ gun platforming beauty is trailers but we’re still hella excited because, well, just look at it!

SteamWorld Heist

Official site

Genre
Platformer, Shooter
Release date
TBA 2016
What is it?
The turn-based tactical shooter follow-up to platformer SteamWorld Dig. When John got to grips with an early build last year, he enjoyed what he played and particularly liked the fact it “clicked instantly” with him. SteamWorld Heist released on Nintendo DS at the tail end of 2015 to much plaudit and is heading to PC at some stage this year.
