Rain World Video Shows Maps, More Physics Wonder

Rain World [official site] has been on my radar since Cara spotted the first GIFs of it back in March 2013, and it just looks better and better. There’s a six-minute long video below, showing plenty of the scampering slugcat and the lizards who hunt him.

The video comes as part of a Kickstarter update which also includes a status update on recent progress, including the navigation maps and food consumption UI featured above. The update also talks about a new creature type, Scavengers, who walk on their knuckles and can use tools just like the player. They should be “the masterpiece of Rain World AI.” Adorable:

Also mentioned is that they’re now working on the final stretch before announcing a Rain World launch date, which is exciting after following development for so long.

I’ve played a number of Rain World builds over the past couple of years and have liked everything about it bar the controls, which make it fiddly to enter the tunnels that connect parts of its world. You end up entering them backwards a lot of the time if your positioning is just slightly off, and entering them backwards means exiting in order to turn around or moving so slowly that you’re likely to be eaten by whatever drove you towards the tunnel in the first place. If they’ve fixed that, it could be something special.

Oh good grief, I am so hyped about this game. Everything about it looks incredible.

  2. Marcus says:

And the song is great too.

  3. GWOP says:

This is gorgeous and terrifying. Can’t wait.

  4. mashkeyboardgetusername says:

I’m faintly disappointed that the lizards can be killed.

    • Bronxsta says:

I’ve played the alpha a lot, and trust me, even with a spear in hand, lizards are always a threat. It’s always a better choice to flee or hide than try to win a confrontation, because the odds aren’t in your favor.

Actually the best weapon isn’t a spear or even your agility, but the ecosystem itself. Like in that video, luring a chasing lizard into the jaws of a vulture or getting two lizards to fight eachother is relatively safer than a hand-on confrontation and always feels satisfying to use your superior slugcat intellect

      • Bronxsta says:

And lizards aren’t even the worst things out there. There are things even lizards are scared of. The ecosystem (and lizards being hunted and killed) is part of the charm

    • Phasma Felis says:

Wait ’til you meet the things that hunt the things that hunt the lizards.

That rain at the end :O

  6. Geebs says:

Does Rain World remind anybody else of a really slick, nicely animated, Chuckie Egg?

  7. heretic says:

The atmosphere in this game is ace, really looking forward to it.
