Katamari Meets Bus Simulator: OmniBus

It’s far too early to make any game of the year predictions but I’m happy to put OmniBus’ [official site] trailer forward as a likely TOTY contender. Presented as a documentary study of a game that has been in development hell for since the “next-to-last gen”. The game itself is a surreal bus simulator, though it looks to be in the manner of Crazy Taxi via Keita Takahashi rather than Goat Simulator + wheels.

Yes, even Hotline Miami Cart Racer raised a smile.

Devolver had a hell of a 2015. I can’t think of another publisher that released quite as many games that I loved/liked: The Talos Principle Road to Gehenna, Downwell, Broforce, Titan Souls, Not a Hero, Hotline Miami 2, and Dropsy. There might be more.

Here’s the word on Omnibus:

“OmniBus is next-to-last gen physics game about the most powerful bus in the universe that can’t stop or even slow down for reasons incomprehensible to the simple human mind. OmniBus must complete missions at the behest of citizens as its speed increases to unsafe speeds and without landing on its head or sides. OmniBus drivers will choose from the bizarre mission mode, thrilling trick mode and versus multiplayer mode for up to four players to achieve goals, set high scores, and receive total enlightenment.”

Ah. Forget my previous reference to Crazy Taxi. This might be Speed by way of Roundabout.

Omnibus ran a successful Kickstarter campaign last year and you can see more screenshots and details on the TIG Source forums. There’s also a demo, which (I think) predates Devolver’s involvement.

That was definitely worth 2 minutes and 18 seconds

  2. yhancik says:

There’s Crazy Taxi, but also something of some bonkers N64 racing games :D

  3. GWOP says:

First it was an Atari Jaguar launch title, then it was a 3DO exclusive, and now I was half expecting it to be an Ouya exclusive.

  4. Borodin says:

Toy of the year? (Bizarrely that was Zoomer Dino last year. Yeah, I know.

Team of the Year? Doesn’t make sense

    • Nice Save says:

      Tractor of the year.

    • April March says:

      Transportsimulationgame of the year.

    • benkc says:

Title of the year, I assumed.

But I like the above suggestion better.

      • Llewyn says:

Trailer of the Year, presumably, since it’s the documentary-style trailer that’s being praised.

Yes, I know, the boring answers are never the best :-(

    • Jackablade says:

Man kid’s toys are awesome these days. I think I need me one of these Zoomer things.

  5. Person of Interest says:

Speaking of Roundabout, it’s part of this week’s Humble Weekly Bundle of FMV games. Worth a look if you aren’t still in a game-coma from all the holiday sales.
