Prepare To Download: Free Dark Souls Steam Code

the grabby-greedy hand of freeness approaches

Dark Souls is the famously easy and brightly-coloured walking simulator beloved of casual gamers, and scorned by the hardcore. If you’ve long desired to frolic in its pastel fields but been unwilling to scrape together the requisite pennies, the good news is that, if you live in the EU (including UK), you can currently grab a Steam code for it for free. I know it says ‘Prepare To Die’ in the subtitle, but that’s just a typo – it’s actually ‘Prepare To Dye’, in reference to its acclaimed dressmaking minigame.

The offer comes via Future’s annual awards ceremony (and, more recently, also a digital storefront) the Golden Joysticks, who are giving away free Dark Souls: Prepare To Die edition codes to anyone who plops their email address and SteamID into this here form. The bad news is that you might have to wait up to seven days to get your code; my hasn’t come through yet so I can’t 100% guarantee that the process works. It’s not related to RPS in any way, so don’t blame me if it doesn’t: this is purely a heads-up.

Again, only open to UK and EU folk, and the offer expires on March 31st – but is also subject to remaining stock, whatever that word actually means in reference to automatically-generated strings of characters.

As far as I understand, this is being done to promote the aforementioned Joysticks store, at which a sale is currently running.

Anyway: give it a go, good luck and let us know below if your code arrives in a timely fashion.

  1. Tony M says:

Such a lovely game. Who did you decide to romance?

    • zarthrag says:

Hellkite Dragoness – Got some tail, but couldn’t get er’ heart. She’s just way too fast.

    • tiltaghe says:

I will always remember Rhea of Thorolund as I first met her in Firelink Shrine. Beautiful voice. The NPCs in Souls games are apparently a small part of the game, with it wouldn’t be the same without them. They are of UTTER importance to the tone.

    • Dezmiatu says:

Quelana of Izalith. All that pestilence around her really emphasizes her beautiful hands.

    • fish99 says:

Ceaseless Discharge. The fun never ends.

  2. Chris Cunningham says:

This massive sale they’re supposedly promoting doesn’t actually appear to involve very much in the way of discounts. One DLC and one pre-order with 15% off each. Or is it because the site’s geo-recognition has decided that it costs too much to send electrons to the Netherlands and so isn’t offering any?

    Anyway, free toys, woo.

  3. Senethro says:

This land is peaceful, it’s inhabitants kind.

    • klo3 says:

A relaxing camping trip by the bonfire.

    • Crane says:

“Kind!? They tried to murder me on sight!”
“Oh, these aren’t the inhabitants. These are just my guard dogs. Guard blobs. Skeletons. Raven things. The inhabitants mostly live over on the other side of the hill.”

    • MykulJaxin says:

Her dialogue has always flabbergasted me immensely. She clearly hasn’t left her room for quite some time… Things are dicey out there.

  4. savagegump says:

Apparently the giveaway is now over… :(

    • BTAxis says:

Looks like they ran out of stock somewhat sooner than March 31st.

  5. theblazeuk says:

    That was FAST.

  6. Al Bobo says:

a perfect game for when you want to watch sports and play the game at the same time.

  7. Parrilla says:

I bought this when it first came out on PC but haven’t played it because I read a lot of people saying you need a gamepad, which I don’t have. Is it possible to play with keyboard and mouse though?

    • Horg says:

Yes, you need DSFix and DSMFix from mod nexus. Despite what some claim, the game controls very well with the modded mouse controls, the only problem is that the in game button prompts are controller only, so you need to memorise what key press corresponds to what button input.

      • Horg says:

Oh, you may also need this:

        link to

I’m not sure if it’s still relevant, but the last patch for DS broke the mouse fix mod. I’m not sure if the mouse fix creator ever patched his mod to work on the new patch, so if it doesn’t you will need to apply the community hotfix.

    • Cyroch says:

Well, you can play with keyboard and mouse, since they are supported. But it controls terrible.
That said, there are people out there who play Dark Souls with a racing wheel, so you may enjoy the extra challenge.

      • Horg says:

I wouldn’t recommend anyone try KB+M without the mod unless you have 3 hands.

    • GWOP says:

Yes. Though this is from someone who finished Metal Gear Revengence and Dragon’s Dogma (Daimon and all) with a M&K,so YMMV.

    • GameCat says:

I’ve finished my first Dark Souls playthrough ever on M&KB, without ANY fix. It was still playable and enjoyable experience.

    • Arkayjiya says:

I finished all Dark Souls with K+Mouse several times including New game + and far beyond. It’s perfectly working, I’d even say that it’s better than the controller when you start playing without the lock on which frankly is more of hindrance than anything after you’ve started to get a good hang of the game.

Like everyone else said though, you need DSfix and DSmouse fix (I reinstalled the game a month ago and it still works for me), don’t forget to configure the DSfix.ini for DSmousefix to be activated. Also I recommend using

      • Arkayjiya says:

Damn slip >< sorry for the double post

I recommend using a mouse with at least 2 additional button on the side for the strong and weak attack on the left arm (or guard/parry with a shield, being ambidextrous is rather weak in DS1)

    • fish99 says:

Buy one? Honestly there’s enough games that play better with a pad to make it worth owning one.

  8. Undermind_Mike says:

Yep offer over :( not quick enough. Maybe I should just buy it haha. If I wanted to play only 1 souls game, which is the most widely commended?

    • GWOP says:

      Soul Calibur 3

    • baozi says:

You only have the choice between DaS 1 and 2 If you don’t have any consoles in which case get DaS 1.

    • Horg says:

DS is generally considered to be the better of the two games, but DS2 has far more people playing, so if you want co-op or PvP that’s the one to pick.

    • klo3 says:

Personally I consider Dark Souls to be the best one, however Demon’s Souls and Bloodborne are quite close.

Dark Souls 2 is a great game but it is widely regarded as inferior to the aforementioned (even tho the DLC’s are of comparable quality), something which I agree on. This is probably due to the fact that it was made by From Softwares B-team and lacks the creative genius and perfectionism of Hidetaka Miyazaki.

Dark Souls 3 will probably be great.

      • inmotion says:

I’m going through DS2 SotFS and it seems the stage desing is somewhat lacking. I’ve not played DS1 too much, but considering Bloodborne is said to have similar stage design as Demon Souls and DS1, DS2 is too linear. There’s basically too little exploration apart from going forwards.
It’s great and all, but it could be better.

      • ramirezfm says:

Agree with this. DaS2 is not bad as everyone seems to think, but its level design leaves something to be desired and it’s also easier than every other souls game. Go for DaS (it’s DaS and not DS for them consoles peoplez due to Demon’s Souls) I love all the souls games and 100%-ed every single one ^_^

    • KastaRules says:

I’ve heard that the TV Show Spin-Off “Better call Soul” is pretty good!

  9. makwikus says:

Apparently SteamID is a bunch of numbers? Great! I entered my Steam login and the form did not object. It just went through. Now I’m locked out.

I guess my question is: What the hell is SteamID?

    • Saarlaender39 says:

      Just enter this link

      link to

into your browser, and press enter:

(Instead of ******* you insert the name of your steam account, ofc.)

That opens up a window, where you’ll find this line:

That long row of numbers is your steamID.

      • Saarlaender39 says:

        Ahh,…sorry…that didn’t go as intended…

h*t*t*p://*******/?xml=1 remove the *s between http and insert your account’s name instead of the *******

        • Saarlaender39 says:

          that line should read

          12345678910111213<*/steamID64* (minus the *s)

          • Saarlaender39 says:

sigh…a kingdom for an edit function :o(

          • makwikus says:

Thanks, but I think the ship has sailed :(

Also, if what you say is true(with the numbers), then why would the form accept a SteamID which has no numbers in it?!

  10. mathead says:

But I already have Dark Souls:Prepare to die

    • melerski says:

I bought it a month or two ago. Oh well.

  11. Foglet says:

“Due to limited stock and unprecedented demand you have not been successful in your application for a Dark Souls Prepare to Die Edition download key.”

Oh well. A bit surprised it took them a week to process that.

    • Shmeenoable says:

Looks like almost everyone got rejected and a few got faulty codes. I’m going to email’em, tear them a new a***ole and spread the word to avoid their site. Please, everyone who got scammed do the same :)

  12. balthebarbarian says:

This promotion wound up being a huge let down as it took them the duration of their very limited sale to tell everyone they didn’t have enough despite being told they would be sending a key in 7 days. It appears the Free Dark Souls promotional lure may have just be a lie to drag people in, as every person I’ve spoken to ( around 50-80 ) either didn’t receive a key or received one that didn’t work. I just think its a shame that a promotion which drew in tens of thousands of potential customers and many RPS readers completely failed to deliver in a way that suggests they never intended to. Anyone who was let down by this promotion please always spread the word.

  13. demosthenes777 says:

I just want to say that I think RPS is friggin’ nuts. I love RPGs, and they list Dark Souls as the best RPG of all time. I got the thing, and it’s crap! I can’t even hit the first enemy without dying. For me RPGs are about fantasy and empowerment, not masochism. Y’all are nuts. Thanks for leading me to waste money (didn’t get game free).
