EVE Valkyrie Blasts Off With Launch Trailer

EVE Valkyrie [official site], launch title for Oculus Rift, has launched, as you might expect given the Rift also launched yesterday. I’ve typed the word “launch” too much and now it doesn’t make sense and I’ve started thinking about “lunch”. Lunch was great. Bring back lunch.

ANYWAY, to celebrate the launch of this launch game in which you launch spaceships down launch tubes and then launch gunfire at the other launched spaceships there is a launch trailer on YouTube. You might say that the launch trailer launched on YouTube.

Launch.

Here’s some virtual reality space dogfighting:

The video is narrated by Katee Sackhoff – you’ll likely know her as ace pilot, Kara ‘Starbuck’ Thrace in Battlestar Galactica – and she kind of explains the rhythm of the game by explaining how death works but in a very trailer-y way. I like it.

The cold death and the canopy explosion she’s talking about is what happens to your ship each time you get blown out of the sky. You sort of see your cockpit shatter and your avatar’s limbs freeze before you go back to the launch tube. Then you respawn, hopefully having learned something from that death and that experience, and set out again.

I also like that the trailer has a moment where it essentially goes “yeah, and you’ll also make mistakes” and then shows a pilot just driving into a bit of space detritus and exploding.

I haven’t played Valkyrie today or yesterday because I don’t have a Rift. Graham is hoarding his like some kind of virtual reality-obsessed dragon, sitting on the headset and breathing fire at people who want to borrow it but I did attend a preview a few months ago where I played a variety of modes and learned a whole bunch about ship classes and so forth which you can read here.

Launch.

I presume it is safe to say I launched to launch the comment regarding the EVE Valkyrie launch.

  2. zarthrag says:

But will it launch on a Vive, or do you have to be Luckey?

      vI’ve no idea.

They say “exclusive on the Oculus on PC at the moment“. I’d expect downgraded console port for Xbone, very, very unlikely but perhaps also PSVR. Vive? In theory there’s no real obstacle against it, but they don’t seem to have any solid plans at the moment. If you want to play it – get Oculus.

Look to the bottom right at the end of the trailer. It says it’s coming to the PSVR, so exclusivity does not seem to be a priority.

    This is supper-exciting!

  4. Cinek says:

Reminds me the Elite: Dangerous – Launch Trailer. Only this time, you know, game they are selling is as advertised as opposite to ETS2 in space.

  5. Captain Joyless says:

Besides the shooty bits, is there character progression like EVE or that DUST thing?

  6. BobbyDylan says:

“The canopy explodes and my Body Freezes”…

    Nope.

Srlsy, hasn’t the myth of instantly radiating away heat in a vacuum left the collective consciousness by now.

    • Don Reba says:

Loud space explosions, slow lasers, and colourful contrails aside.

      • Psychomorph says:

You summed up everything I hate about generic space shooter.

        • Cinek says:

As opposite to realistic space shooter, where there’s nothing, and then you explode.

          • Psychomorph says:

What would be the cause of the sudden explosion?

          • Napalm Sushi says:

Probably a millisecond laser pulse from an autonomous hypervelocity drone 1000km away.

Let’s be honest; if you’re portraying space combat that’s in any way meaningful to human senses and aesthetics, you’re either making some painfully stretched contrivances or you’ve wilfully plunged into the realm of unspeculative fantasy.

Best space combat battles were for me in the Books Hyperion/Endymion.

Which you should now, you whoever reads these words, if ever you like SF and missed one of the best Scifi series of all time.

      • BobbyDylan says:

Well all those things are gameplay elements. Hearing what’s going on around you, seeing where they shooting and moving… all important things. But freezing in space… is just wrong.

    • Psychomorph says:

      Indeed.

The facepalm can be heard on the other side of the galaxy.

    • GWOP says:

Well, everyone would have wised up to that if they could use more than 10% of their brains!

  7. Mirarii says:

I find it fitting that her character keeps dying and coming back in the trailer.

  8. racccoon says:

Yawn..snoooze…collapse..fallback asleep..= CCP They have always been so dam slow on the uptake and yet they are still so dam boring, because they are so dam slow..Its like all CCP do now is follow trends that they could of done years & years ago! But, because of their ignorance of their fanbase’s old ideas & rants of how they should go, they now go try & bend it & mess it up so badly that your just want to fall back to sleep again through the sheer boredom of their late copy cat actions.
    CCP = copy cat publishers

  9. Xzi says:

Seems like Valkyrie is garbage. Free if you get it with Rift, but $60 otherwise AND it has P2W features. More than a little disappointing, but not particularly surprising coming from Facebook gaming.
