Syndicate-Like Tokyo 42 Is Today’s Prettiest Game

The award for ‘most beautiful game that came out of nowhere’ goes to Tokyo 42 [official site]. Mode 7, creators of Frozen Synapse and its ultra-exciting upcoming sequel, will be publishing the game and have just released a trailer. Think Syndicate with a dash of Hotline Miami and a dollop of Big Hero 6’s fantastically colourful cityscape. It’s an isometric shooter with stealth and open world elements and it’s ruddy gorgeous.

Look at it! You probably are looking at it but look harder. In fact, stop reading this right now and plant the entirety of your attention on that trailer.

It’s a looker and no mistake. I’m a big fan of the music as well.

As for how it will play, given that it’s not due for release until 2017, I think the trailer gives us a pretty good idea of what to expect. Isometric action, with stealth in the form of hiding in crowds and ducking behind walls. The screenshot above is taken from a multiplayer level, which takes place in “hyper-detailed little arenas”, whereas singleplayer takes place in an open world city.

More details when we have them.

    Love at first sight.

  2. Sp4rkR4t says:

    I want to marry this.

  3. NyuBomber says:

In the absence of a child of my own, I will unquestionably love this.

Even when they TEST ME AAARGH

  4. FreshHands says:

I daresay I am more in love with this than any of you.

  5. InfamousPotato says:

Holy halibut, this is amazing! The colors, the San Fransokyo-like city, the trench coat, the cat! It all looks incredible! I also like how they’re handling the isometric perspective. Absolutely lovely, all of it. Somebody give these developers a cookie.

  6. Dances to Podcasts says:

I like the lovely world, but when the trenchcoated guy jumped down and started killing everyone the shift in tone to Columbine/terrorism simulator kindof ruined it. :(

    • Optimaximal says:

Not played Syndicate? The violence is likely entirely optional and/or simply collateral.

  7. Luciferous says:

Visually stunning, although the sudden large face of terrible pixel art that popped up was massively off putting and out of style for the rest of the game.

I think I would have preferred these visuals paired with a different style of gameplay though.

  9. Raoul Duke says:

Oh my god, this looks amazing. It’s been a hell of a long time since Syndicate Wars game out.

I absolutely love that it appears to have bullet physics modelled to some degree.

  10. corinoco says:

    I just… I don’t even… I argle blaaaarrrr.

My brain just melted. It’s like Ghost in the Shell, the Matrix and Syndicate just had a cute little bunch of kittens.

  11. PixelsAtDawn says:

I played this game on Friday – it has a exciting habit of making you feel like a badass at all times. Definitely one to watch.

  12. tonicer says:

If only this was first person *sign*. :(

What is this, a game for ants?

  14. jonfitt says:

Ooh lovely. The only part that was less than awesome was a brief shot of him jumping across platforms above the abyss. I think adding platforming would be a mistake. Maybe it was just for a secret.

    • Cederic says:

Yeah, that would be a terrible shame. I completed Kyn despite the gameplay getting a bit repetitive because it was such a lovely world to inhabit and explore, and I’m in love with their world map.

I immediately and instinctively want to enter and enjoy this game world too, but platformesque gameplay would just flat out prevent me progressing, so really hoping it’s not part of the game.

  15. muki0 says:

Looks amazing! Will look out for it.

That said, as much as I love pixely games, the choice of pixel-art cutscene portraits is weird to me.

Other than the scale, the perspective, and the vaguely futuristic setting, I’m not seeing how this is anything like Syndicate.

    • deadlybydsgn says:

It has the “murderous agents hiding amongst the future crowds” vibe of Syndicate, but I’d otherwise agree that the gameplay doesn’t really match. (and the fundamental difference between controlling a single unit instead of a squad) Playing Syndicate often involved wanton violence, but the action here seems closer to a twin stick shooter than point and click.

  17. GWOP says:

The shot at 1:29 was great.

  18. carewolf says:

Haven’t seen a game that classically early 90s.. Not even in the early 90s.
