Oh, And Rainbow Six Siege Has A Free Weekend Too

If you want to shoot faces in new and exciting ways, oh my giddy aunt you’re spoilt for choice this weekend! Gearbox’s Battleborn has an open beta going on, id Software’s new Doom’s has kicked off an open beta too, and oh mercy me I’ve just noticed Rainbow Six Siege has a free trial weekend too. Strewth! That’s a fair amount of the face-shooting spectrum covered there, from wall-bursting tactical action through hellfire to co-op storyshoots and MOBAing.

Pip has coined the excellent term ‘freekend’.

Rainbow Six Siege is a tactical FPS with one team of naughty people trying to fortify and defend positions against goodcops, with destructible levels folks can blast paths through. The official RPS stance (as much as we have such a thing, anyway) is: we like it! And until 9pm (UK time) on Sunday, you can download and try the whole game in a free trial weekend. You can install it through Steam (it’s also in the ‘Free Games’ section of Ubisoft’s Uplay client, but doesn’t seem to work for me).

Siege is also on sale this weekend with a 33% discount, bringing it down to £25.99 on Uplay and £26.79 on Steam. Its DLC is on sale too.

Oh, and Blizzard’s Overwatch also has beta weekend going on. This is a closed test, mind, but Blizzard say they’ve invited a lot more people to this one. Check your e-mail to see if you’re in?

You almost got me! I just dl’d the Doom beta, I was going to grab Siege based on this recommendation and sale price…

uplay?…oh yeah, I’m still boycotting Ubisoft. Oh well.

    • LionsPhil says:

Yeah, that evaporated all my interest too.

    • Crocobutt says:

It’s very tempting. Rainbow Six Siege looks really sweet. But I will also not buy anything that has Uplay.. which is not sweet.
Hoping my dusty wallet-vote counts for something..

The whole “I’m going to shoot myself in the foot to spite a company because I’m mad at them, while simultaneously missing out on a great game because…principles” thing is so pointless.

R6:Siege is exceptionally good, providing a new perspective on FPS tactical gameplay. Missing out on that, purposefully, seems bizarre to me.

      • Doomlord says:

Not only that but in some ways, uPlay is a better experience or equal to STEAM. You can reap actual “rewards” for leveling up or getting achievements (new skins, maps, or items, for example) which provides welcomed motivation behind the achievements and leveling. I like the way each game page is laid out and other reasons.

Not sure why anyone would actively dislike it at this point or “boycott” it. SMH

You apparently are more excited by a skinner box that I am.

        • xyzzy frobozz says:

I like the way you put “rewards” in inverted commas.

I don’t buy Ubi games because of UPlay.

This isn’t petty spite, it’s because I’m exercising my choice as a consumer to not suffer through things that annoy me.

    • Koozer says:

Psst guys, hey, hey guys, UPlay…isn’t that bad. It’s roughly on par with Origin.*

      *cue complaints about Origin.

      • zarthrag says:

Origin is actually all-right, minus one *really* annoying bug that asks for my password after every update, despite checking “save/remember password”. When I’m not using origin, I don’t have to deal with it. When I start it, it updates itself, and my games with little hassle.

uplay…. Is a separate store, which isn’t a crime. Except that I bought my game through STEAM. Launching my game launches uplay, who then wants to update itself, then the game, and…

…it’s the same reason I don’t touch my PS3 anymore. Every time I get in the mood, I lose interest while sitting through 15 min worth of updates just to get to the darn game. I don’t want an avatar, or care about some tchotchke-gamerscore-street-cred-reward system.Let steam handle application updates, and just launch my darn game, already!

Siege is great fun and you should all get on there.

I downloaded it and I can definitely see its appeal. But after being shot through a tiny hole in the wall a bunch of times I realised I don’t have the patience or motivation to play a game like this anymore.

    • flashlight_eyes says:

The game is certainly frustrating at times as it requires A LOT of patience, but thats why i love it. The rounds are only like 4 minutes long yet that be a tense restless four minutes.
getting shot through walls is actually pretty avoidable, but sending in drones first is a MUST in this game, which then turns it into an interesting game of hide and seek as roaming defenders dont want to be seen until they have an element of surprise. I really find rainbow six siege compelling as its very little about twitch reactions or accuracy, and a LOT about foresight, patience, and planning. If you die as long as you try to learn from it the game will open up with options/depth. Having played the game a lot now i’ve found that i am rarely killed without feeling that I have been truly “outplayed”, but this requires map knowledge which can be a long process to get them down.

Anywho, any amerifats who wanna play this game, plz add me, and plz have a mic.
Flashlight_Eyes is my tag on there to

Anyone else finding difficulty downloading it? Usually the free games appear in my library, not the case this time. When I go to the store’s page the only option is to add it to my cart.

    • Rindan says:

Go to the store page. Under the part where you can add to cart, there is a News box. Under that is a Free Weekend Box. Click the free weekend poster thing and it will start to download. It took me a while to find it.
