The Foxer

The defoxing annexe’s ‘pub games’ area is taking shape. We only have two games available at the moment, but they’re both crackers. In our version of devil among the tailors the devil is a fender-fitted He 111 and the tailors are barrage balloons, and in our take on shove ha’penny the board represents an aircraft carrier flight deck and the ha’pennies are miniature wheels-up Westland Wyverns (Obviously, you score by touching the lines not avoiding them).

Foxer Fact #813

Brodie Price, the creator of several huge ‘geoglyph foxers’ in Western Australia’s Gibson Desert, often incorporates real vehicles in his collages. His last puzzle – ‘Industrial Fires and Explosions’ – made use of a Kazan Ansat, a Handley Page Halifax, and a 2-10-4 ‘Texas’ steam loco.

Top left is Douglas A-3 Skywarrior. Known as the “Whale”.

The skull bottom left possessed me to type “dog dinosaur” into Google image search. I wish I hadn’t.

Yes, apparently you CAN buy a dinosaur costume for your dog.

Skull looks more like something from the weasel-family, like Otters.

To me it looks very much like some sort of small carnivore. It’s very similar to a mongoose skull (link to skullsunlimited.com) but not quite. I’ve been looking at stoats and minks and ferrets but can’t seem to find a perfect match.

      • All is Well says:

Actually, on further research it seems to be some type of seal. The closest one’s I’ve found so far have been California Sea Lion skulls where everything down the teeth seems to match, for instance here:

While I share your dismay, I do feel that, this being an internet search you’re talking about, things could’ve ended up far worse… :)

Rule 34 STRONGLY suggests you should take this conversion no further :)

      • AFKAMC says:

In that case, although that looks like a jeep bottom right, I won’t be searching for “willys”.

Got excited for a moment. Archibald McIndoe was born in Dunedin. I thought the skull might be from a “guinea pig”. But it isn’t.

The photo top right is Stephen Ambrose, author of Band of Brothers (among other things).

  6. chuckieegg says:

That skull is from a Brown fur seal.

Also, I got that purely from Google image search which produced the link to the original image on Wikipedia straight away. My god, the singularity really is just around the corner.

  7. mrpier says:

Hmm, could the link be the Dunedin Star rescue at the Skeleton Coast.

    • mrpier says:

A Lockheed Ventura dropped supplies to the survivors.

Aha! Dohna-Schlodien was famous for making sure to rescue all the survivors from ships he sank, so he fits too.

Dunedin station, skeleton watch, Lockheed Ventura (used in the operation) – looks like a good start!
