Devolver Digital Steam Sale Is Pretty Great

I realise sales are now everywhere, all the time, always, every day, 24/7, 100% saletime, live life in the sale lane, welcome to Salecity, hit the salezone, everything must go, ground floor: perfumery, stationary, and leather goods, wigs and haberdashery, kitchenware and food – going up – but some individual sales are still worth pointing out. For example, ace publishers Devolver Digital currently have a biggun on Steam.

Yes, they recently had a Humble Bundle and are always in the big Steam sales but… they’ve got Downwell for 99p, man. Both Hotlines Miami together are less than £4. Shadow Warrior is £3. The Talos Principle is £8. Titan Souls is £3. I’m sure many have been cheaper at times, but these are all good prices.

The full list of games on sale is this-a-way. That’s quite a big list, isn’t it. A lot to work through. A bit overwhelming. Tough to start on.

In which case, for reference, here are Wot I Thinks, impressions, and chats we’ve had about… shooty downwards-platformer Downwell, first-person puzzler The Talos Principle and its DLC, run ‘n’ gunning action movie homage ’em up Broforce, roguelikelike top-down shooter Enter the Gungeon, die-restart-die-restart-die-restart-MURDER EVERYONE top-down shooter Hotline Miami and its sequel, hugtastic adventure game Dropsy, neighbourhood-building sim Block’hood, revived supernatural FPS Shadow Warrior, boss-battling action/adventure Titan Souls, acrobatic shmup Luftrausers, side-on shooter Not A Hero, decision-making survival game Gods Will Be Watching, side-on stealth murderer Ronin, and bird-fancying dating sim Hatoful Boyfriend.

Ah. That’s still a huge load, isn’t it. In which case, I will say that Downwell is a whole load of fun for a quid. I’m sure some of your fellow fine readers have other games they’d fiercely argue are The One For You too.

There are publishers sales on Steam where you browse the game and you’re like “I don’t recognize any of theses games” or “Ah i know that one got panned by critics”.

And then there is the Devolver’s sales where you’re like “omg that was is so cool, and that one too, and that one !!” and then “omg they also did that ? they are awesome”.

The 5 or 6 previous years have been a golden age for Devolver Digital and they are still at it in 2016 with Titan Souls and Enter the Gungeon…

It’s their bold new strategy of only put out good games. All the other devs said they were crazy and it’d never work but here we are.

“Top down shooter Hotline Miami?” Surely you mean “top down gun-thrower and cookware-swinger Hotline Miami.”

I always refer to it as an “electric eighties themed top down murder spree simulator”

Devolver has really become a seal of quality in recent years as far as I’m concerned–even if not all of their stuff is to my taste, it’s almost always guaranteed to be interesting. Really glad that they’ve been able to flourish as a mid-level publisher; we could use more of those.

Also, Ronin is hugely underrated. A little rough around the edges maybe, but I had so much fun with it. It’s basically the most badass puzzle game imaginable.

    • LionsPhil says:

Yeah, Ronin’s pretty fun, with the occasional control frustration when it’s toggling in/out of pause when you don’t want it to.

Well, there goes that excuse to not buy Downwell…
