The Foxer

The defoxing annexe now has a cloakroom and a cloakroom attendant. There’s no charge for leaving coats in the care of Mr. Tipton, but garments may be returned “with cryptic enhancements”. If you don’t want your buttons switched, your sleeves emblazoned, and your pockets invaded I suggest you make use of the row of hooks next to the Battle of Kohima diorama.

Roman is suffering from setter’s block at the moment. He’s tried all the standard cures – ice baths, horseradish tea, lysergic acid diethylamide – yet remains as congested as ever. Thank goodness for understudies. The puzzle below is the work of Ema, a Moravian intern whose hobbies include missing trains, removing ticks, and fashioning beautiful landscape collages out of coloured pencil shavings.

  1. AFKAMC says:

    Top left, Tupolev Tu-160 “Blackjack”

  2. Shiloh says:

I think the coin bottom right is a Louis XIII “Louis D’Or”.

    • Stugle says:

I got as far as it being a coin struck with Louis XIII’s head on it, but I couldn’t tell you whether it’s a Sou or an Ecu or whatnot.

  3. Zogg says:

Top right looks like a P-15 Termit or SSN2 Styx

  4. Stugle says:

The star on the funnel of the ship top left looks like the American Bicentennial flag, but I can’t find any ships with it…

  5. Premium User Badge

    phuzz says:

The picture in the bottom right, is that Frank Sinatra on the far right in the straw boater?

    • Stugle says:

I don’t think so… I can’t proclaim myself an expert, but I do have an unhealthy number of Frank Sinatra albums at home. Doesn’t quite match the images I know of him.

      • bobbylake71 says:

Bottom right, I think seems to be more like Fred Astaire than Frank Sinatra. Fred liked the similar straw boater. No idea about the other two…

    • Tim Stone says:

Roman says the three are pilots not performers. They met a tragic end apparently.

  6. Hydrogene says:

The strange blob on the left seems to be a pollen seen by a scanning electron microscope (SEM), but I don’t know which species.

  7. Shiloh says:

If you look closely at the street scene bottom left, you’ll see an “M” (presumably “metro”) sign – the shape suggests Italy.

  8. phlebas says:

The badge at the bottom is the cap from a bottle of Tourtel beer:

  9. Shiloh says:

I’m wondering whether there a tenuous connections to Louis Pasteur – he was invited to Tantonville by the brothers who originally brewed Tourtel), “silkworms” (he saved France’s silk industry)… he also used “swan”-neck flasks apparently. And he was called “Louis”, after all.

  10. phlebas says:

Could the game icon be Republique?
