Thrill Of The Fight: The Banner Saga 2 Survival Mode Out

If you’ve been waiting Ever Since The World Began, you Can’t Hold Back, you’re suffering Desperate Dreams, your Eye of the Tiger scans the horizon for signs of Broken Promises, then good news: The Search Is Over, and Here Comes Desire. Today The Banner Saga 2 [official site] receives its promised Survivor mode in a free update.

Survivor mode is a permadeath challenge with rounds of gruelling combat to survi- wait. Survival mode. They’ve added a survival mode. Pffff.

Fine, whatever, here’s the official word on what ‘survival’ mode is about:

“In survival mode players have to assemble a ‘combat’ team from a wide range of existing Banner Saga heroes. Once their team is complete, combat begins, but beware, perma-death in battle is real and once lost, a hero can not be brought back. Each victory grants ‘Renown’ (one of the major currencies in the Banner Saga), which can be used to unlock more Heroes to replace ones that have fallen. Items now drop in combat, or can be purchased with Renown, so that you can constantly improve your combat team. A 30-second timer keeps the action moving and leaderboards track how each player ranks against others. All three difficulty levels are included in survival mode, so the hard core challenge is available to those who think they can make it all the way through.”

Yeah yeah, wrap it up, okay. Sheesh.

Survival mode has been in public beta for a few weeks, so perhaps you’ve played a bit and might fancy telling your fellow readers what you make of it?

Wait, what? The game is already a stupidly hard turn-based war of tactical attrition.

Knowing full well that I’m setting myself up, but who would play this?

It’s a difficult game, but I’m not sure I’d classify it as ‘stupidly hard’. Lots of people would play this. I love tactical RPGs with permadeath and this sounds like a condensed mode offering that. Can’t wait to jump into this.

That’s fair – I played it for a couple of hours and I was frustrated that all of the battles for the first couple of hours basically turned into “who do I pick to die this battle.” I found it very difficult because I approached it from the standpoint of “keep everybody alive” and I felt like the battles where built to always kill off a fighter or two (or more). Quite possibly I was playing badly. The beginning of the game felt very very hard though, and not compelling enough to continue playing.

I didn’t find the combat ‘stupidly hard’ and I am looking forward to try this mode! It is a great addition in my opinion.
