Overwatch Unveils Its Next Hero on July 21

Rumour has it that the next Overwatch [official site] character will be a support sniper, but you won’t have to wait much longer to find out for certain. The next hero will be revealed at San Diego Comic-Con on July 21.

Blizzard developers are hosting a panel titled “Behind the Scenes of Overwatch’s Newest Hero”, so they’re being pretty direct about it. Here’s the full description from Comic-Con:

“Blizzard developers James Waugh (director of story & creative development), Michael Chu (senior designer, Overwatch), and Arnold Tsang (assistant art director, Overwatch) present a behind-the-scenes look into the creative process of developing the art, design, and story for Overwatch’s newest hero. Q&A session moderated by Kim Phan (senior manager, esports).”

Blizzard haven’t been shy, dropping generous hints on the upcoming hero, who’s rumored to be a medic/sniper named Sombra. YouTuber Arekkz does a good job summing up all of the hints unearthed thus far in one tidy little video:

Players found character files on the Dorado map for Soldier 76, Jack Morrison, and the mysterious Sombra. Exploring further afield, Easter Eggs including a newspaper clipping about Sombra and photos of an elusive hooded figure turned up. All of these clues have stirred up quite a few fan theories, the most popular being that Sombra was a soldier in the same battle that defeated Soldier 76 and Reaper. Players turned super sleuths were especially delighted when a photo of a new sniper rifle popped up on the Overwatch Twitter account:

Looking at the picture more closely, you can see that the rifle was designed by Torbjörn and Mercy. The notes suggest the gun was originally meant to be a biotic device before Torbjörn revamped it into a sniper rifle. The weapon is solely intended for healing, although Mercy expresses her concerns over the rifle becoming “weaponized”. All signs point to a healing support character with sniper capabilities.

Didn’t Dirty Bomb also have a long ranged sniper medic thingy?

  2. alphager says:

… because that’s what currently needed: another sniper.

I hate losing matches because the snipers don’t make any effort to even be near any of the objectives but concentrate on their k/d-ratio.

    • MikoSquiz says:

They’re concentrating on the Ks so you don’t take too many Ds; the idea is that you take the objective and they keep you covered.

Of course, the problem arises when they’re actually rubbo at keeping you covered. But being bad shots doesn’t mean they’re stupid. (Ideally, it should mean that they switch to Mei or Winston or someone, but not everyone likes to be a horrible oik or to play a character that doesn’t actually do damage.)

It’s an interesting idea, trying to nudge the ubiquitous sniper mains towards more of a support role. But it’s an idea that will live and die by how satisfying the mechanics turn out to be. And obviously how effective.

      • MikoSquiz says:

Too many snipers and not enough healers, you say? Hmm..

Of course, this idea parallels TF2’s Crusader’s Crossbow medi-crossbow, but it’s an interesting way to deal with the issue. Next they’ll be adding a quick-moving glass-cannon flanker with a defensive turret to fix the “No Builders” problem.

    • Kitsunin says:

We really needed another healer. Perhaps making them part sniper means they’ll actually get bloody played, heh.

But seriously, there’s actually only one sniper right now. The game may classify Hanzo as a sniper but anybody who is good with him will recognize that he is a midrange hero, who typically sticks around the same range as Pharah and Soldier 76.

While another healer would certainly be welcome, she’s going to have to be pretty dang powerful to supplant Mercy and Lucio as almost required picks. Lucio’s speed boost and passive AoE heal and Mercy’s game winning rez are just too useful.

With the current balance, we could probably use anti-air or anti-tank. Pharah is running wild after the McCree/Widow nerfs and multi tank comps are all over the place.

Since the ammunition seems to be Soldier’s healing field, it might be that she’s shooting small versions of it. And perhaps an AoE damage field as well, perhaps with a damage over time poison effect? Could be interesting for blocking/denying paths.

Tororbjorn? He’s not some Spanish bull.

    • MikoSquiz says:

He’s a Swedish thunder-bear. That’s what the name means. Tor = thunder, björn = bear.

Similarly, Hafþór “The Mountain” Björnsson’s name means “Ocean Thunder, Son of Bear”. And Björn Borg is “Bear Castle”. But I think Hafþór wins.

      • int says:

I know that. For the first time, I’m Sweeeedish! Toror though looks like toro: Spanish for bull.

It’s fun to see how people misspell Torbjörn. I’ve seen Toybjorn, Torbjon, Tobjon, Toblerone (though that one is intentional).

    Sniper called Dallas.

Just sort out the colourblind options first damnit!

I realise that this is a stupid question from someone who sees colours normally, but what is wrong with the current ones?

      • aircool says:

They just makes things worse. Not only that, but the colourblind options don’t let you change any colours, they’re still chosen for you, put the colourblind filter affects everything.

When you can only see a limited colour spectrum having options that just seem to limit that spectrum even more is pointless. Not only that, but all the options make red look like blue, so you end up just shooting at your own team.

It’s all a mess. Colourblind people have been bashing on this subject for years, and it’s great that most games give us colourblind options, unfortunately, it seems that no colourblind people were actually involved in testing.

Basically, the current colourblind modes are like giving a deaf person subtitles, but with half the letters missing.

  7. Shadow says:

I approve of this new potential hero.

(Sombra means Shadow in Spanish. :P)

  8. Monggerel says:

They should call every hero Zeitgeiststurmabteilung instead. And then I’d be a successful political(?)(?!) cartoonist. Yes.

  9. Thirdrail says:

Fix the Overwatch loot box system to be a hundred times less tedious and boring than it is now, and I promise to return to caring about Overwatch.

    • Bweahns says:

I’d also like to see the voting time massively shorted and to only play the play of the game if it is something amazing. I hate fannying about at the end of every round. Just start the next game.

My theory is that the sniper won’t be pin-point player hits to heal your team, but instead shooting at the ground from afar to place down a biotic field, similiar to soldier 76’s healing range. Playerrs will move in the area from health and it is a lot more effective.
