Kick-o! Street Fighter V Adding Juri On Tuesday

This month’s Street Fighter V [official site] will launch on Tuesday, July 26th, Capcom have announced. The biggest addition is Juri joining the playable lineup, returning from Super Street Fighter IV. She’s already appeared in SFV through its Story Mode, released last month, but now everyone will get to kick faces as the Taekwondo expert (cheeky modders have enabled her earlier, mind). Here, this trailer shows some of her moves:

If you’re a few Street Fighters behind, you might have missed Juri. In which case, here’s what Capcom say about her:

“A trained expert in Taekwondo, Juri also possesses a ki booster called the Feng Shui Engine equipped in her left eye to aid her during battles. She focuses on flashy, fast and furious kicks, and has a wide range of ki-based attacks at her disposal. Her trademark moves are her ki-based fireball attack and pinwheel kick.”

No, I don’t know what’s going on with her new costume either. I far prefer her Street Fighter IV look too. Even for a character who’s part of an evil organisation named S.I.N., a shiny catsuit is a bit yawn-o. I liked her poofy fighting trousers.

Also on the way in the July update are new summer beach costumes for some ladies, as Capcom show in their blog post.

Hey, you rough ‘n’ ready Street Fighters – how are you feeling about the game now Story Mode is in? How’s the roster’s size now? Who do you still want to see coming over?

  1. Zankman says:

Holy hell, what the hell is this?

What the hell is that outfit? What the hell is her bust all of a sudden? In its entirety, the outfit and character design changes, it’s just…

The changes from the previous iteration are crazy!

And then the beach outfits – of course just for the female characters – Christ…

This series is just getting worse and worse, ugh. The shark has been jumped as far as the designs go, this is DOA territory… Deplorable…

    T7 can’t come soon enough.

    • QSpec says:

Really? Tekken is the basket you’re putting your eggs in? I get the dislike for FG design in general, but Tekken has historically been one of the worst offenders (one need look no further than Unknown).

While T7 isn’t *as* bad as it has been in the past, it still has Loli cat girl, Loli robot girl, and totally not Laura.

      • Zankman says:

In general Tekken is the best FG series so that is why I am looking forward to it – and, yes, Harada himself has had quite a few questionable designs – but even Tekken seems sensible to what SF has become.

        • Ashabel says:

Are you sure you’re talking about the same Tekken 7 as everyone else and not something that exists in a parallel timeline?

You know, the Tekken 7 that has Lucky Chloe (even Japanese forums are laughing at her embarrassing design), the embarrassing racist mess that is Josie Rizal, the Raven genderswap wearing bikini armor with assless pants and a final boss whose alternate outfit is a bikini three sizes too small?

    • pepperfez says:

The worst is that they’re adding Urien without his canonical bikini. That’s just disgraceful.

      • montorsi says:

Uh? Urien’s ultimate disintegrates his suit and he’s left in the usual banana thong.

        • pepperfez says:

Sorry, that should have been “with anything other than his canonical bikini.”

    • Shadow says:

What? How are these design principles new? Similar design choices as, say, Cammy since forever.

And this one even shows less skin. For what it’s worth.

    • tsff22 says:

      Don’t you think you’re overreacting JUST a little? =/

    • Press X to Gary Busey says:

      The female form is untouchable.
Looks like it might get a little sweaty in that basketball chest armor insulation padded, form-shrunk, body mold latex suit.
The creaking and squeaking of moist rubber, latex, leather and spandex would be unimaginable fetishistic levels of noise.

    • Capt. Bumchum McMerryweather says:

What about zangief, Alex, Balrog, and Necalli all having their big manly torsos out? Or Vega basically being a sex machine? Or Urien basically wearing a banana hammock? I haven’t heard one of you idiots complaining about any of that, ever.

And besides, what exactly is the problem with a man liking a nice bit of pixel boobies? Are we to eschew sexual desire now just because 0.5% of the global population is offended by it? Well I’m sorry, but offence is taken, not given, and if you don’t like it go and do something else.

Just shut fucking up already, women and men are animals who evolved through the desire to have sex, so it’s really no surprise that sex is a part of people’s decision making, be it through design, or purchasing.

      • pepperfez says:

A strong take. I’m sure you changed some minds here.

        • Capt. Bumchum McMerryweather says:

In my post I may have made an inference that I was talking to everyone in the thread, when actually I was just talking to the OP, and the group of victim-farmers that he or she represents.

Either way, angry rants on the Internet are unlikely to change the world, I’ll grant you, but God help me if I’m not sick of hearing people talking about ‘sexualisation’ like they a) even know what it means, and b) like sexual desire is such a bad thing in the first place.

Also, he or she is well within their right to voice their opinion, but I’m equally within my right to tell them I think they’re full of shit.

    • urbanronin says:

feminist detected, also its not about how characters are made to look or what outfit they have, a game is about how good the gameplay is game-play, GAME-play, its not characterplay, or outfitplay, game-play!

  2. Ansob says:

At least her battle outfit is both cool and not boob-tastic. :(

Hey, you rough ‘n’ ready Street Fighters – how are you feeling about the game now Story Mode is in? How’s the roster’s size now? Who do you still want to see coming over?

Honestly, the game was solid at launch from a pure design perspective, and the addition of the cinematic story mode hasn’t changed that at all. I still think that overall, this is the best and friendliest SF has ever been.

That said, it’s a bit disappointing to see that they haven’t really done anything to address the core issues – namely:
    1) the one-sided rollback netcode is atrocious and really needs to go first
    2) 8f input delay makes reacting to fast moves a lot harder than it should, and I don’t know why they didn’t keep it at 4-5f (which was what USF4 had)
    3) there’s some weird discrepancies between model and hit/hurtboxes on some characters that it would be nice to see fixed, but tweaking those is the kind of stuff they’re probably reserving for one big balance pass once season 1 is over
    4) for the love of god, give gief his greenhand back so he can be playable again. :(

The roster size was fine at launch, honestly, but all the DLC characters have been well-designed and are a welcome addition.

Still, Makoto had better be the first announced season 2 character.

    • QSpec says:

I agree with most of what you say. Their rollback decisions are mind-boggling.

That said, Rose has best be coming before Makoto.

    • Baines says:

The game at launch was a rushed, unfinished product. Capcom released it anyway because they wanted it out in time for this year’s tournaments.

Capcom has spent the months after release trying to bring the game up to the level that it should have been released at. Even here they’ve fallen behind schedule.

Throughout, Capcom has continued to act like Capcom. In this case it means the more negative greed, arrogance, and a general disdain for its audience (that in the past has at times reached near outright hatred.)

It is almost sad that the core game *is* decent. If it were bad, it could sink into oblivion, and other companies could carry the fighting game torch until Capcom decided to try again 5-10 years later. But no, it is a pretty good game, overwhelmed by Capcom’s terrible decisions and management.

    • montorsi says:

Gief is perfectly fine. Stop making excuses for not learning to play a character that had two guys finish top 32 at Evo and has multiple players with a boatload of LP online. Wah wah, can’t get in for free. Play the damned game.

      • MisterFurious says:

Wow, you’re a douche. The worst thing about Street Fighter has nothing to do with the game or Capcom, it’s the deplorable fanbase made up of arrogant twits that all think they’re the greatest player the world has ever known.

        • Person of Interest says:

I think it’s just a translation error. What I believe montorsi meant to say was, “I respectfully disagree that Zangief needs significant changes: he’s viable as-is. Several folks at high levels of play are having success with him, which I think backs up my assertion. It’s possible that he’s a poor choice for players at lower skill levels, and if that’s the case, maybe Capcom could address that without affecting his balance at championship levels.”

          • Kitsunin says:

As a whiny baby who can’t make excuses for not speaking English, this theory is correct, you idiot. Every damn time I try translating into this stupid language, everyone just can’t help but cry about how “arrogant” and “douchey” I sound. Screw off.

    • Addie says:

Since Juri’s moveset (is/was) entirely made up of kicks, it makes design sense to have her legs a slightly different colour and her feet picked out distinctly. Makes her moves more readable, which makes the quick motion look better, and also gives your opponent a little more chance of reacting to them. Her fancy trousers in 4 made this work perfectly well. Making the design decision to change to a two-tone, painted-on catsuit which is then almost invisible due to particle effects seems regressive, at best.

  3. Synesthesia says:

It’s a bit of a shame, really. The core mechanics seem really good, AFAIK (i’m really new to fighting games), but the character design for most women characters is flat out embarassing.

The roster seems to be growing extremely slowly, too. Netcode feels really shitty, too. All around a bad show, a shame, too. The actual game is gorgeous, and a lot of fun.

I thought the 8f delay was a PS4 issue? Can someone enlighten me?

    • Baines says:

      It is a PS4 issue.

As for enlightenment, it depends on which part of Capcom you ask. Capcom of America appeared to address it as an error to be fixed, while Capcom of Japan called it a working-as-intended-style conscious design decision. (This kind of opposing stance is hardly new for Capcom. Capcom apparently has a long history of in-fighting and ill-will between its departments and studios. And Capcom’s US and Japanese offices have even been on public opposing sides of other SF5-related matters.)

Basically, the Japanese explanation appears to be that they chose 8 frames of input lag because they wanted an ample cushion for cross-play networking concerns if/when they ported the title to unknown future platforms. (Capcom of America claimed the “intentional” part was an out of context mistranslation, though the full Japanese comments made it pretty clear that it wasn’t.)

      • QSpec says:

It is also a PC issue. You have to disable V-Sync to lower it on the PC which is effectively modding it. When/if they fix it, it will also be changed on the PC.

    • QSpec says:

Sadly, I can’t throw too much shit at SFV for this. They are as guilty as any fighting game company for their portrayal of women, but they aren’t really more guilty of it. It is the burden FG fans have to bear unfortunately.

The roster is growing quite fast. Characters take a long time to develop, and Capcom is churning out one a month. You won’t find that pace anywhere. It took Skullgirls almost 1.5 years to get 4 out. For an Arcsys game, you’ll just have to buy a new version to get 4 extra characters (see Xrd -Sign- to Xrd -Revelator-). In fact, the pace is so quick, it will inevitably have to slow down. The characters coming out now have likely been in development for quite a while already. I half agree on the Netcode being poor though. If you search for matches of quality 5 or at worst 4-5, then things will definitely improve… but for rollback, it is shit.

As for the 8 frames of delay, that is not just a PS4 issue. On a PC you can do things to lower it, but that isn’t exactly by design.

      • pepperfez says:

I think the skeeviness of the women’s designs is mostly disappointing because Capcom has historically been, not good, but at least not this blatant. That the change comes along with their move to a F2P-style sales model is probably not coincidental.

        • montorsi says:

Two of Juri’s three costumes are fine. Karin is fantastic. Chun-Li is awesome. Ibuki is kind of silly in terms of design but there isn’t a bunch of skin everywhere. For me it’s kind of half and half.

          • Zankman says:

Main one is the one that matters.

            Also, Cammy.

Also: Chun-Li’s is good? Yeah, no, they went overboard.

Overall, it is definitely a noticeable step in the wrong direction.

          • tsff22 says:

Chun-Li’s main outfit is literally her iconic blue battledress. I don’t see the issue myself.

  4. DelrueOfDetroit says:

My brain is incapable of comprehending what is going on with that hand in the header image.

  5. Spacewalk says:

Crimes against fashion is the real evil.

  6. poohbear says:

To all those who’re complaining about her outfit, the latex compliments her boobies and booty quite nicely. She has very good taste and i truly appreciate it. It’s not the developers fault the latex fits her body so well.

  7. BooleanBob says:

Poor old Juri. Torn down in some internet circles for being too sexy, in others (post-costume alterations) for being too chaste.

What I really find offensive is Capcom’s DLC pricing model. Half the price of the game for a stage crammed with reused assets, three costumes and some palette swaps..

    • Chillicothe says:

I’ve found that means a bullseye for sexiness.

    • pepperfez says:

Wait, people are complaining about a latex catsuit being “too chaste”?

  8. urbanronin says:

yeah well, crapcom should get their facts straight, the announced Juri will be released in 26 of july, guess what, its 26th and i dont have Juri, why? because crapcom dont know there are other continents on planet earth, far to say there are other countries except USA, fucking MURICA
