Build Ships As Your Own Worst Enemy In Defect SDK

Destroy everything you create, that’s my motto. Create it, enjoy it, examine strengths and flaws, destroy it before someone ruins or – worse – accepts it, then move on with what you’ve learned. I’m delighted to finally find a video game which understands me.

Defect: Spaceship Destruction Kit [official site] is a shoot ’em up where you carefully design a ship you’ll love and adore, then crew will mutinity and you’ll need to build a whole new ship to defeat them. Over and over, build ships to destroy their predecessors. I dream of a ship able to destroy me. Point is, Defect has now launched.

You know the score: snap together modular engines, weapons, hulls, gadgets, and so on until you have a spiffy spaceship. But not too spiffy! Your crew with inevitably claim it and you’ll need to wipe those wretches out, so don’t hand them an invincible ship. Before that becomes a concern, though, you’ll have a mission to complete with shmup action – and your mutinous previous crew will surely show up.

Developers Three Phase Interactive launched Defect on Steam Early Access last October and now it’s properly done. You can pick it up on Steam for Windows, Mac, and Linux at £10.99/14,99€/$14.99.

I like the idea of designing an intentional flaw (that’s my favourite bit of BioWare’s Jade Empire), though I do hope it can’t be as simple as exploiting a cycle of Rock, Paper, Scissors. Or Rock, Paper, Scissors, Well. Rock, Paper, Scissors, Spock, Lizard. I might accept Rock, Paper, Shotgun, mind.

Now look at this cheeky space oddity:

  1. TheAngriestHobo says:

“This is a mutiny! You’re a capable doer of the nasty… but I’m taking over.”
    “On what grounds, you oaf?”
    “Failure to prevent a mutiny.”

  2. geldonyetich says:

I always wondered why they put the self-destruct system in sci-fi spaceships. Well, I suppose preventing a never-ending series of mutanies is as good a reason as why.

  3. TechnicalBen says:

“I’m going to start a mutiny! The captain is an idiot and should be stopped”
    “But you are the captain.”
    “Oh, oops…”

  4. magogjack says:

    OOOO A Jade Empire shout-out !

    I loved that part.

  5. Premium User Badge

    DelrueOfDetroit says:

Based on that opening paragraph, I hope Alice doesn’t produce offspring.

  6. Razumen says:

Nice, I kind of wish Gimbal had a mode like this, though some of the ships you can create there are so unique that it would be hard/impossible to make an AI that could effectively use it against you.
