Spoiler-y Dark Souls 3: Ashes Of Ariandel Gameplay Vid

Dark Souls III [official site] will be the end of Dark Souls, as far as director Hidetaka Miyazaki is concerned, but we’ve still got two DLC story add-ons to come before it wraps up. The first of these will be Ashes of Ariandel, which is due on October 25th, and… do you want to know more about it or enjoy a surprise? If you fancy going in fresh, probably don’t watch the new trailer released today. Its four minutes of gameplay show not much, really, until they show exciting spoiler-ish things that honestly I’d rather have seen fresh while playing. Be warned. For the bold, onwards:

I know! Is that…? Was that…? And…? The answers are no, ish, yes, and mmmaybe.

It’s strange how powerful the nostalgia is in Dark Souls III, given that characters from the Dark Souls really only sat out for one game. It carries a weight of so much unseen extra history, a tragedy of repetition, a sense that we’d been away from familiar faces and echoes of archetypes for so very long.

These hunks of DLC really might be the end of it all.

“It’s time to move away from the Dark Souls franchise,” Hidetaka Miyazaki told Polygon on the DLC’s press rounds. He’s said the same before but y’know, it’s still relevant.

“As president of From Software, I’m not completely denying the possibility of bringing back the franchise in the future. There could be someone else in my company who wants to work on new installments. But we believe that the series will end after the two DLC.”

Polygon say Miyazaki did mention the possibility of “HD remakes” of earlier Dark Soulses but it doesn’t sound like those are concrete plans at all, rather than most likely way Dark Souls would return if it did. And he’s not saying it will.

Apparently From Software are working on a new Armored Core game. You’d hope that, given these multiplatform days we live in, they’ll bring the mech series to PC this time.

Ashes of Ariandel is due on October 25th. It’ll cost £11.99/14,99€/$14.99 by itself or come with the unknown second DLC pack in the £19.99/24,99€/$24.99 Season Pass.

Oh you better believe I’m going to get spoiled the fuck out of this.

Well that was less spoilery in the ways that I’d have liked, there were just previews of some of the DLC’s enemies and bosses, and very little new weapons showcased. No appearance of the new spells that were shown in the announcement video.

I still have my mage character around, but the endgame was so boring and easy that after finishing the game I haven’t opened it once (which is sad, comparing to ds2 and ds1), maybe this will give me a bit of a fun time.

That was a whole lotta Bloodborne right there, for anyone looking to get spoiled without actually knowing what they were spoiled on. It’s interesting, how DS III has been pointing quite steadily towards that game. “Look!” DS III seems to say. “Wasn’t -REDACTED- Beast cool?” Well here ya go folks. This is what you wanted. This is your payoff. It’s not about deserving any some particular thing; it’s just that you can have it.
God damn I love this series
    when I’m feeling particularly decadent.
