The Foxer

Does anyone know the whereabouts of the key to the defoxing annexe’s lost property office? It’s a square-headed brass Chubb attached to a Hoverlloyd key-ring. It hasn’t been seen since Tuesday morning when Uncle George used it to cure Moira’s hiccups. Roman believes it may have been handed in to the lost property office on Wednesday, but as the lost property office is currently locked and the key is missing, we have no way of verifying this.

Roman has been a tram-spotter for as long as he can remember. As a kid, every Saturday morning he’d grab his notebook and pen and dash down to the junction at the bottom of his street in the hope that a tram line had been built there during the night. Living in a tiny rural hamlet 110km from the nearest city, the chances of tramification were slim, but young Roman never stopped believing.

Now he’s a little older/wiser/lazier my chief foxer setter does most of his spotting via Street View. Can you identify the fourteen cities he’s visited during the past week?

  1. Syt says:

First pic is Vienna, my home town. It’s actually the 71 tram that takes me to work. :D

    • Syt says:

Location is corner Ringstraße-Schwarzenbergplatz. In fact I’ll be there in an hour when I head itno the weekend (it’s 5 minut walk from the office). :D

      • Syt says:

I also realize my spelling is pretty spotty. And still no editing function. :(

  2. Stugle says:

Atgh! My internet connection is letting me down! That said, I believe B. is Hong Kong (double decker tram, chinese characters on the business on the left).

  3. Little_Crow says:

    B) looks like it might be Hong Kong.
I haven’t found the exact picture, but the double decker trams are exactly the same style as ones I’ve found

  4. Stugle says:

    L. Is Prague (that must be the castle in the background – very scenic pic, that one).

  5. AFKAMC says:

    Is J. Istanbul’s T3 heritage tram line?

  6. Little_Crow says:

    C) Tallinn, Estonia
At least Kopli is a tram terminus there

  7. Stugle says:

An observation on F: Delta Dental is a dental insurance company in the US (I worked for them for a spell), so it must be US-based. I’ve got nothing else yet.

    • Arglebarf says:

Portland? They’re famous for light rail.

    • Arglebarf says:

Nope. Bit of googling show that it is the South Lake Union Streetcar in Seattle.

      • Stugle says:

I was thrown off because it’s not raining in the picture. Ba-dum tish.

  8. Stugle says:

Cunningly, E. is not an actual tram line so much as an inside view of the Brussels Museum of Urban Transport. :)

  9. Llewyn says:

    H looks to be Porto.

  10. Arglebarf says:

    K: Melbourne, Australia

    phuzz says:

    n. is Ontario

      phuzz says:

By which I mean Toronto in Ontario obviously (it’s not because I’m a clueless brit or anything)

    • Little_Crow says:

Was going to post just that, or I was also leaning towards Boston.

Trying to find pictures of the ass end of trams is trickier than I expected.

  12. Llewyn says:

I think M may be Stockholm.

  13. Stugle says:

    G. Is in Nice, France (I spotted the ‘Quai’ on the blue sign and the Nice trams have a palm tree logo).

    • Stugle says:

It’s at the Pont Michel stop in northern Nice, looking west (I’m having Foxer withdrawal already, so I’m looking for specific locations).

  14. Llewyn says:

And I completely missed I, Sheffield.

    • Stugle says:

Dang it! I just Googled for ‘blue orange red tram’ and discovered that linked to Sheffield. Beaten to the punch, my cap is doffed to you, good sirrah.

      • Llewyn says:

To be fair, I probably see them in the metal more frequently than you might. One of the great virtues of trams is that their drivers are limited on just how lost they can get.

      • Little_Crow says:

Got pipped on Athens, Seattle and Toronto. Don’t you people have anything else to do?

        • Llewyn says:

…asks the man whose name appears against seven of the 24 solved answers from last week ;-)

        • Little_Crow says:

To be fair Stugle got 8. I’m not the nerdiest, but dang it I’m trying :-)

Don’t expect that performance every week, Missing vowels is my specialist round on Only Connect, a quiz show that RPS Foxerites/Foxerses/Foxettes would appreciate if they aren’t already avid watchers.

  15. AFKAMC says:

    M maybe Oslo.

    bsplines says:

D is Athens although I don’t know at which exact point of the line.

  17. Little_Crow says:

I think that might be that then…:

    B Hong Kong
    C Tallinn
    D Athens
    E Brussels
    F Seattle
    G Nice
    H Porto
    I Sheffield
    J Istanbul
    K Melbourne
    L Prague
    M Oslo
    N Toronto

Super fast defoxing work there people, pats on the back all round :)

    • Stugle says:

Huzzah! Nice start to the weekend for all of you in Europe (enjoy your tram ride home, Syt – 20 minutes from now!) and not a bad way at all to start my Friday over here.

      • Syt says:

Thanks, but I ended up walking on foot along Ringstraße on account of the weather being so nice. :)

Good job, everyone, on the Foxer. :)

    • phlebas says:

That’ll teach me to linger over Friday lunch. Well done, all!
