OverWITCH: Hallowe’en Comes To Overwatch

I think my favourite ever Hallowe’en event in a game was the one which put the chickens of CS:GO into little ghost costumes. They were so adorable I’d get shot because I was chasing chickens about the place. ANYWAY. Overwatch [official site]. Overwitch? That game. It’s having a Halloween event for the next few weeks with Hallowe’en-themed loot and a special co-op PvE event called Junkenstein’s Revenge.

“Team up with three other players and face off against a host of eerie enemies, including Dr. Junkenstein himself, Junkenstein’s Monster, the Reaper, a mysterious witch, and host of shambling zomnics.”

There’s an accompanying comic that sort of riffs on the Frankenstein story with a version of Junkrat bringing a stitched-together Roadhog to life to stick it to a local lord. I mean, I have questions about said comic, because Junkrat was all “I will create actual life in order to gain respect from this douche-lord” and then couldn’t and sort of cheated by letting Mercy do it instead and promising her whatever she wanted in return. To me, that’s not really doing any of the bits to actually earn respect, it’s just fucking up and letting someone bail you out.

ANYWAY. Overthinking Overwatch aside, the event then follows on from the comic with you teaming up with other players to defend the lord’s castle against Junkrat Junkenstein. It’s a wave defence mode, is what I’m saying:

“Players will choose from the Alchemist (Ana), the Archer (Hanzo), the Gunslinger (McCree), or the Soldier (Soldier: 76) and defend Adlersbrunn castle’s doors against Dr. Junkenstein’s onslaught. Heroes will need to work together and develop strategies to withstand not only the advances of his macabre entourage, but also wave after wave of zomnic attacks.”

I’ve just popped my head in to check out the mode and I kind of want to eyeroll because hooray organ music spooking and then oh, a sexy witch costume:

Anyway. you can select from easy, medium and hard difficulty then you spawn in, trying to head off waves of zomnic minions who whittle down the door’s health if they reach it. Over the course of the game there will also be minibosses, so a Reaper with a pumpkin on his head, a Frankenstein’s monster Roadhog – you get the idea. I’ll likely spend a bit more time with it this afternoon as it seems as decent a way as any to get to grips with Ana, plus I do like a novelty mode every now and again.

That reminds me: I still have a Jack-o-Lantern head thing I haven’t used in Destiny.

The brawl is great fun and a good way to practise some heroes. Just be sure to step in at Easy and work your way up, since people at Hard mode get more than a little miffed if you’re not up to standard on each of the 4 heroes.

Biggest plus for me is the Event skins can now be bought for in game credits (3x normal skin price). The Summer Event had skins only droppable from boxes, which was a bit of a rip-off.

Blizzard’s always been great at doing Halloween stuff. I remember back when they replaced all the enemies in Diablo with demons and ghouls. They even made a whole spooky church level just for the occasion. Talk about dedication.

New mode is fun, if a bit limited.

Wouldn’t surprise me if this was a beta test for some kind of full co-op mode, similar to what Valve did with Team Fortress 2’s Mann vs Machine update.

What the hell is that Mercy costume?

I mean, nothing necessarily wrong with giving characters “sexy” skins, especially if they usually don’t have sexy outfits, but, eh… Just so typical and trope-y.

For a company that is apparently trying to scrub the Internet of Overwatch porn, they sure seem to be feeding that machine with new material at every turn.

I thinks its actually because of fan response, in one of the maps there is a small image of Mercy and another characters in Halloween costume where Mercy is wearing a witch costume.

Also in terms of “typical and tropey” I shall respond with “Ain’t broke, don’t fix it”

      • Zankman says:

        >I thinks its actually because of fan response, in one of the maps there is a small image of Mercy and another characters in Halloween costume where Mercy is wearing a witch costume.

Maybe that was just a teaser, then?

Either way you look at it, not really surprising.

        >Also in terms of “typical and tropey” I shall respond with “Ain’t broke, don’t fix it”

Well, just a matter of taste. Sometimes you see a trope and you’re like “cool”, sometimes you roll your eyes, sometimes you think “really?”, sometimes you think “not this again”, sometimes you think “this is an interesting spin on it” and so on.

Witch broom and silk leggings? Spiked heals? Not really triggering my loins, just stylish imo.

      • Xocrates says:

You know, these kind of replies always worry me a bit.

Regardless of whether or not it’s a good skin or not (for what is worth, I find it fairly neat) it’s also clearly and blatantly sexualized, and doubly so in regards with the pose in the image above.

As such, disregarding the sexualization as if it’s not even there (regardless of your opinion on it) makes me concerned regarding both diversity of female character design and the standards real women are measured with since anyone not this “sexy” is perceived as unfeminine or even ugly – and this is not idle speculation, this is stuff I’ve seen happen.

        • wykydtronik says:

I am not aroused by that Mercy skin. 🤔

          • Xocrates says:

            Which is perfectly normal.

But the game clearly thinks you should be and your comment made me think you didn’t notice, which is more worrying.

          • Zankman says:

            Definitely weird.

Regardless, not really your call, one’s individual taste doesn’t matter.

Objectively, it is a sexual design.

        • Zankman says:

I don’t think you should be so negative.

This person, their weird taste aside, just was thinking too subjectively to ignore that, regardless of their taste, the Skin is blatantly intended to be sexual.

      • Zankman says:

        >Witch broom and silk leggings? Spiked heals? Not really triggering my loins, just stylish imo.

Stylish, sure, no one is denying that.

But, it’s not just leggins and spiked heels – why are you ignoring the gorgeous face? Stylish hair? Ample and accentuated chest/cleavage? Non-covered area between her leggings and skirt? The pose? The fact that it is an overall attractive woman?

It is definitely “stylish” but I think even a gay male could tell you that it is a sexual/sexy outfit and, from a creative PoV, design…

Really, anyone that understands the concept of “sexual” can see that it is such a design.

Also: What kind of taste do you have if you don’t find that attractive?

Unless you can’t find drawn characters sexy in the first place, yeah, wtf…

      • artrexdenthur says:

Lol, spiked heals :D More appropriate perhaps for her demon outfits

    • April March says:

It’s not a problem if there is a sexy lady. It’s only a problem if every lady is a sexy lady, a problem which the devs worked to fix.

That said, I’m assuming there are more costumes than shown in the video. If only one female character gets a costume and that one costume is basically “slutty witch”, then yeah, that’s A Bad Thing.

      • Xocrates says:

There are 4 Legendary Skins, all of which are in the video and the only female one is the sexy witch. (the others are Junkenstein, Junkestein monster, and the pumpkin head Reaper)

There are a few more skins, including female, but these are largely just zombified versions of the base skin. Nothing to the extent of the Legendary ones.

Amusingly, the Junkenstein skin adds a significant amount of clothing to that character.

      • Zankman says:

        >It’s not a problem if there is a sexy lady.

In on itself, no. I agree.

        >It’s only a problem if every lady is a sexy lady

        Exactly.

I don’t really find it surprising that in “lightweight” in terms of universe cohesion games like Overwatch and LoL have mostly attractive female (and male) characters – it is just kind of expected and, really, not that big of a deal (most players will be male, after all).

When the balance is skewed between “sexy” and “non-sexy” too much, though, to the point of non-sexy feeling like “token” designs… Yeah…

        >a problem which the devs worked to fix.

You use the past tense here; surely you mean that they gave up on fixing that, right? You’re not implying that they fixed anything, right?

There are interesting and different female designs in Overwatch.

They are still the minority and Blizzardo has found a way to make the typical hotties ever present, plentiful skintight spandex included.

        >That said, I’m assuming there are more costumes than shown in the video. If only one female character gets a costume and that one costume is basically “slutty witch”, then yeah, that’s A Bad Thing.

According to what the other person replied with – yeah, seems like it is A Bad Thing.

They got a bit bored with coming up with class names after the first one, didn’t they?

I’m impressed by the amount of polish and attention to detail in this update. The special Brawl mode is a heap of fun and really nicely put-together, with new voice lines and everything.

The Hollywood map has apparently had a spooky makeover, but I haven’t drawn that map in Quickplay so far.

The skins are well made (there are even tiny candles on spooky Pumpkin Reaper’s guns), if a little obvious. I guess the sexy witch shouldn’t have been a surprise. The comic has a viking Torbjörn and pirate Ana which would’ve been nice to see in-game, but don’t quite fit the spookiness of the rest of the costumes.

  7. Junkenstein says:

Keep it up son, take a look at what you could have won.

  8. Monggerel says:

“Ten of my closest French” sounds like Overwatch alright.
