Reinforcements: Battlefield 1 Update Plans

Now Battlefield 1 [official site] has been out for a fortnight (here’s Wot Brendan Thinks of it), DICE are gabbing about their future update plans. In the near-ish future, you can expect a rebalancing of the map Suez, Hardcore servers, the introduction of ‘Custom Games’ including a team deathmatch mode, and a free new map.

The new map will be Giant’s Shadow, arriving in a free update in December. Here’s the official word on it:

“Prepare to take part in the Battle of the Selle in the cold autumn of 1918. Here, the fighting moves out of the trenches and into open country where a massive crashed airship casts its shadow onto the battlefield. The British forces have broken through the Hindenburg line and are now in pursuit towards an important railway center. Fierce infantry and tank engagements ensue on the open ground and river banks alongside the Cateu-Wassigny railway where an armored train can still turn the tide.”

Before then, Custom Games will arrive with the first week-long ‘Battlefest’, which will begin on November 16th. The first will be Fog of War, a team deathmatch mode in which “you will be challenged by limited sight as you’re fighting in fog with the mini-map and soldier name tags turned off.” What could go wrong?

Then there are Hardcore servers, which are supposedly “coming soon”, whenever that is. I don’t believe the specifics for BF1 have been detailed yet, but BF Hardcore server rules tends to amp up challenge by disabling health regen, forcing friendly fire on, making soldiers squishier, turning off crosshairs, and so on.

For word on what they’re changing in Suez, word on matchmaking tweaks, hints of the Rent-a-Server program, and other odds and ends, check out their blog post.

I’m looking forward to custom servers with no SMG’s.

Honestly, unless the Hardcore mode strips most of the weapons away and gives every class access to basic, unscoped bolt actions I still have zero interest in “BF4 2: The Great War’ening”.

Instead of rebalancing Suez, can’t they just remove it from Conquest server rotations?

To be fair, I’ve barely played Suez, but I feel like just looking at that tiny 3 flag, 0 vehicles map and how 90% of the skull icons keep lining up neatly alongside a line in the middle, is enough to ascertain that it’s garbage. I do not understand why this map exists for Conquest. If you want to play this frontline infantry struggle kind of thing, both Operations and Rush do that, more or less exclusively, and they do it better. Suez is a shit Conquest map. Just get it out of there.

Or randomize server rotations so I don’t have to quit after St. Quentin is done? I like St. Quentin, but Suez always following it makes me not want to join servers currently on it.

Or show current ticket counts in the server browser so I won’t join rounds that are about to end? BF4 did this. It worked.

Or let people run their own servers? Why is that not a thing any longer? This official DICE servers only solution is bad, limits options.

They should do all these things.

Fog of War is an idea, that I’m not into at all. When fog is temporary and dynamic like the weather changes in Conquest, it’s ok, switches up the rules on you for a bit. When it’s everpresent, all it does is restrict the tactics that are effective, impairing or effectively removing engagements from ranges further than close.

Thanks for a tenth map I guess, sounds like it won’t be garbage.

I like Suez. I mean, in small doses, but it’s fun in the way Locker and Metro are fun. And if you happen to have a couple of good squads on each side, you do get a constant shift in captures, moving back and forth with a nice flow.

That said, the Rent-A-Server *really* needs some autokicking and banning admin tools. The built in anti-cheat seems decent enough, but I’m really tired of playing with 12yr olds who only know how to speak in slurs.

I hope you understand that everyone has a different experience online?

I have a “problem” with crazy russian snipers that have no life, and spend a lot on their input devices. And occasional KURWA in chat, but no apparent 12yr olds.
