MOBA Gigantic moves into open beta on 8 December

I was about to just use the lyrics to Gigantic by the Pixies as the intro to this post but then I remembered what they actually are and what they mean so the whole thing got a bit NSFW. Instead, here is the game news: Motiga’s 5v5 third-person MOBA, Gigantic [official site], is going into open beta from 8 December on Windows 10 and Xbone. I assume this is to take advantage of people taking various days off for the holiday season and perhaps looking for something new to play.

You can get a feel for the game with the following trailer. I’d put its art style somewhere between Battleborn and The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker:

Gigantic will eventually wend its way to Windows 7 and 8 but not for a while. I’d sort of lost track of the game as it got picked up by Microsoft for publishing but then went through some layoffs and general uncertainty. It’s now being published by Perfect World so it’s no longer entirely part of the Windows 10/Xbone exclusive ballyhooing as it will also be published on the Perfect World platform, Arc, with those Windows 7 and Windows 8 versions, at a later date it sounds like. So a kind of timed exclusive-ish, but perhaps more because of the development that’s already been done at this point.

“Open Beta features a personalized rotation of 16 heroes and three maps, Siren’s Stand, Ghost Reef and Sanctum Falls. Each hero features a unique playstyle that can be further customized through comprehensive skill trees during each match. Teams can work together to attack the enemy while claiming points on the map to summon powerful Creatures to aid in battle. Players can power up their team’s Guardian by controlling the battlefield and defeating enemies. Victory will be rewarded to the team who can overpower their opponents’ Guardian.”

The closed beta is running one more time this weekend if you have access to that: 12/1/16 09:00am PT – 12/5/16 11:59pm PT. I do have access to it but it requires me to remember the correct Windows login details. Unfortunately a Batman: Arkham Asylum incident left me with, like, three accounts and I never remember which one is the real one. I also accidentally created a fourth one last month and am apparently the proud owner of the username “SavageBus”.

The struggle is wheel.

Oh great, I was hoping there would be another MOBA to play.

  2. Gunsmith says:

    oh look, ANOTHER fucking moba

For those that are knocking this, it doesn’t really feel quite like playing “yet another MOBA”

I suppose it might qualify as such, in that there’s XP, different characters, and the goal is to destroy the enemy base (or in this game, a creature!), but it really feels like it has a lot more in common with the “destroy the core” modes in Unreal Tournament 2004.

Minus the vehicles and flying… There’s none of that. :)

Seriously, it’s actually quite fun. I played it for a number of hours when they had a weekend beta available. The art style is quite pleasant, and it runs well, given that it’s using Unreal Engine 3 (I think?) and not some newer, less tested and optimized engine.

The levels have a good amount of verticality to it, and using the different abilities feels a lot more akin to something like Team Fortress 2 or cycling through guns or something.

If Overwatch is a very stripped down, damn near barebones version of the model, this sits head and shoulders above it. Give it a shot!

After watching a buncha streams, best comparison I can think of is Guild Wars 1 GvG ‘cept 5 on 5. Totally not a MOBA.
