Giveaway: 10,000 keys for The Exiled alpha test

The Exiled [official site] attempts to blend MOBA combat with a sandbox MMO. In other words, it’s either a MOBA with a huge map and hundreds of players, or it’s an MMO with PvP combat and a promise of “no more grind.” It’s currently in alpha until December 21st and we’re giving away 10,000 keys to get in today. You’ll find how to enter and a trailer below.

That widget below will dispense your key in exchange for one of three actions: looking at our Facebook page for a moment, following us on Twitter, or following us on YouTube. We like it when you follow us places, basically.

The later is my version of hell. The former is how I picture purgatory.

So, i played for around 4 hours tonight with a friend. Verdict: ….meh.

Combat has no feedback, so you don’t really feel any of the hits or when you’re hitting monsters/other players (aside from seeing a health counter go down, inexorably). Servers are lag prone, even with few players on (in 4 hours we kept running into the same 3-4 players). Finding crafting resources is, apparently, a rare event. It took us our entire play session to find 3/4 of one crafting material to make a beginning bow (they are tied to specific regions, so if you want wood, you have to travel to Wood Town and fight specific timed events to maybe get some wood).

Encounters are timed “events” that has you defending a random macguffin while, usually, timed egg sacs spawn around you for 5 minutes. You have 30 seconds to left-mouse-button attack all of them (DoT, crowd control, or special attacks have no effect), or an exploding rat appears (??) and blows up your claimed meteor (???).

PvP is also dire – attacks have no weight, and with us two fighting each other, it took over 5 minutes just to bring one of us down.

Fighting the “named” monsters for recipes is also buggy, with monsters disappearing at the end of a fight, robbing you of loot.

Sound design is hilarious (frogs sound like guys dying, lightning spells sound like 80s guitar riffs), and the graphics remind me of a diablo 2 knockoff, even though it’s running in Unity.

Appreciate the free key, but I am wholly unimpressed. Sorry.

I don’t know what this comment means. I’m aware it’s noted as an “alpha” state, but the core game loops just aren’t fun. Hunting down artificially scarce materials and shooting stationary eggs for a mandated 5 minutes every time is not fun. PvP is not fun. It is designed to be a grind, which is not fun.
