Shantae: Half-Genie Hero jumps, climbs, and swims out

Shantae: Half-Genie Hero [official site], the crowdfunded fourth game in the platformer series starring a genie who can transform into animals, launched today. I’ve not paid much attention to the revamped re-releases of Shantae’s old handheld games I’d seen bouncing on PC but I’ll take Half-Genie Hero raising $776,084 on Kickstarter as a sign that many folks think the series is quite good and want more. Half-Genie Hero is the first in the series made for big screens so let’s have a gander in the launch trailer below.

That’s Shantae there, leaping around, whipping enemies with her hair, and transforming into different creatures to use their abilities. Magic!

The game’s made by WayForward, the jumpy folks behind games including the remakes of DuckTales and A Boy and His Blob. Shantae is a creation of their own, mind.

As I say, I don’t know much about Shantae but fans paying up that much for a Kickstarter – and without the usual ‘big’ names that draw attention – must suggest they’re pretty good stuff. Say, if you backed this (or picked it up otherwise), what are you making of it?

Shantae: Half-Genie Hero is £13.49/17,99€/$17.99 on Steam, which includes a small launch discount for the next week.

I confess to cracking up at that alt text.

I was a backer so i got it a week early. It’s a pretty good platformer! Less metroidvania than The Pirate Curse, the levels are more linear with brancing path for powerups and collectables. kinda short tho, i finished it in about 6 hours with 91% completion, and once you get the Metal Bikini you only really die to bottomless pits and spikes.

Shantae is great fun. I’ve played Risky’s Revenge on Steam, and it’s quite tough and got a great sense of humour. The meeting with Rottytops, a friendly zombie lady, is a highlight.

remember playing the original back in the day so I backed the kickstarter, also liked the soundtrack they showed off. Been playing a bit of it since I got my key.

I was a backer and have completed one 100% playthrough. Took about 7ish hours. You unlock some kind of new game mode afterwards. Keeping some transformation to make a second playthrough faster.

The game looks really nice if you like the cartoon style.
It plays Great. Shantae grants your wishes of what to do.
It could have had one or two not stages without it having felt like. It was a bit on the short side.

If you are looking for a challenge, this is not it. It is a pretty easy game.
I was invulnerable during the whole final boss due to getting infinite mana(actully very fast mana regeneration) and the fully upgraded shield that makes you invulnerable usually with a hefty magic cost.

TL;DR; Fun, simple, cutsey-art, witty, solid gameplay. Buy if you want a well made platformer.
