Deus Ex: Mankind Divided’s pre-order mission now free

The pre-order virtuaguff of Deus Ex: Mankind Divided [official site], which includes an extra story mission, is now free for all players. A patch on Friday whopped it in. The ‘Desperate Measures’ mission isn’t big but it does poke into that train station bombing which drives a fair chunk of the game so, er, good that it’s finally available to everyone. This blob of freebies also includes some new skins to dress up Adam Jensen, though don’t get your hopes up for more than different coats and body armour – no casual slacks and polo necks for this mopey cyberman.

The virtuaguff is that new mission, new skins for Adam, reskins of the pistol and assault rifle, and a grab-bag of consumables which, really, you’re probably better off avoiding because they give an early advantage the game wasn’t balanced for. That’s now in the game for everyone, added with a patch which should download automatically. If you head this-a-way you can download the novella, book, and artbook.

Pre-ordering is a mug’s game so it’s nice that Squeenix are doing this for people who didn’t play along. If you did play that wicked game, hey, you got this five months sooner than everyone. Hopefully, one day, they’ll not pull shenanigans like this at all.

Here’s the official blurb for Desperate Measures:

“As Adam Jensen, you find yourself in the city of Prague, recently rattled to its very core due to a bombing at the Ruzicka train station. With tampered security footage hampering the investigation behind the attack, you must rely on both your augmentations, and skills as a covert operative, in order to unveil the true culprit responsible for the bombing.”

It’s set after the main story and accessed separately. I understand it’s not mega-great but hey, it’s something. With a second Mankind Divided DLC coming this year, following Adam’s adventure with Sia and a l33t d00d, I suppose this pops the game back up on folks’ radar. I mean, more than it did when we gave it a big shiny prize for our favourite city of 2016.

    I never asked for this.

As a preordering mug, I’m fine with this.

The more it goes, the more I’m convinced I must be stupid as F. to play anything else than game of the year editions of (most) games.

They just need to fix it crashing all the time now and I can finally be happy.

Indeed. For the moment this is a purely hypothetical improvement to my Deux Ex experience, since my current experience of Deux Ex is limited to constantly watching the same boring on-rails walkthrough of a train station until the screen goes black and my PC locks up.

Whoa, they held content back from this game? If I bout this very overpriced and incredibly short game I would be raging.

I’m not surprised. Looking at the steam reviews the first thing one sees is an overwhelming number or Thumb Down reviews and they’re still trying to charge full price for it nearly half a year after release (this in addition to the fact that they, somewhat infamously, also have micro transactions in the game). Good luck with that…

They’re probably hoping this will get more people to buy the game!
