It’s Rico time! Just Cause 3 multiplayer mod out in beta

The big silly sandbox of Just Cause 3 is a fine place to dick about, driving and gliding and exploding all over for giggles, but it was sorely lacking the option to muck about with your mates. That’s now resolved with the beta release of Nanos Just Cause 3 Multiplayer [official site]. The unofficial mods adding multiplayer with potentially hundreds of players per server, chasing and racing and exploding together. Just Cause 3 is chaotic with only one play so with hundreds, oh my!

This was supposed to launch in December but, following, officially launched on Friday. The mod’s still in beta, fixes a-flying, but you can now download Nanos JC3MP from its site for free. You’ll need to log in through your Steam account and, obviously, own a copy of Just Cause 3.

The mod also supports scripting for server owners to create and run custom game modes.

This JC3 multiplayer mod, by the way, is different to the one that was being made by folks behind JC2 MP’s mod. That got cancelled when its lead developer landed a job at Avalanche, the makers of Just Cause.

I’ve not had a crack at this yet but did enjoy the sheer foolishness of the bit of Just Cause 2 MP I played. Certain areas of the world became non-stop explodezones but I had some great fun playing ad-hoc games with unspoken rules, racing and chasing and, obviously, exploding.

    How does “non-stop exploding” work, exactly? Once you and your mates have lain waste to every facility, what’s left to destroy?

      Airports could be mega-murder hotspots in JC2MP, players and cars and planes exploding everywhere.

      In the vanilla game, once you’re done with the story, you can “re-oppress” anything you like, resetting it to the way it was before Rico came along. Stuff outside of bases, outposts and towns (e.g. bridges, petrol stations) resets itself automatically after awhile. Presumably that works in the mod too.

      Each other. Also, weapons and vehicles were set to respawn. The airports in particular were horrible because everyone wanted aircraft. So you’d set foot in an airport and have a 1 in 3 chance of dying in a few moments. Thankfully the devs built in a teleport feature so you could get back easily instead of traversing the landscape for an hour, but it made it slightly worse since it meant it was easier for EVERYONE to get to the airports and blow each other up.

    Now there’s hope we’ll see another Real Life Server, which I still consider as the pinnacle of multiplaying. The sandbox “tomfoolery” is fun for sure, but gets old FAST – the RLS server was trying to be an actual game. Roleplaying, earning money with supply runs, conquering towns(territory), buying guns and cars and fighter planes, 4 factions duking it out in panau.

    I’d just really like a meaningful FPS game. Not just a “spawn and go -one”.
