Asylum horror The Town of Light being fancied up

The abandoned ayslum of psychological explore-o-horror The Town of Light [official site] is being spruced up a bit. Developers LKA have been making The Town of Light prettier and a bit bigger for its upcoming console release, see, and say those changes will come back to PC. Our Adam quite liked The Town of Light when it hit last year, especially having visited the real-world ruined asylym it’s set in, so good, good news for folks with a similar horrorhead to that lad.

Today’s announcement says the reworked version “will offer new puzzles, additional story elements, reworked voiceover dialogue, more interactive elements and a huge graphical and UI overhaul that aims to deliver a more polished and immersive experience.”

It neglects to mention quite how we’ll receive these changes on PC, whether they’ll be a free update or a separate game or a paid upgrade or… I’ve e-mailed the marketingmen to ask, and will let you know what I hear back.

The Town of Light, to remind you, is a very gently puzzly explore-o-adventure visiting the ruins of a now-closed asylum in Italy. Adam quite liked how different it felt to your usual video game asylum, with nary a jumpscare ghost nor mechanical megamonster in sight, when he played a chunk. LKA were shooting for the horror to come from the sorts of things that genuinely happened but ah, from what I’ve seen a fair bit is clumsy and cliché. That’s not a quote you’ll find in this new trailer:

    I found this to be graphically stunning and engaging, if a little cliched towards the end. Very much a walking simulator on rails but doesn’t suffer for that if you are happy with just uncovering the story with basic interactions. I had tears at the end but I am a big softy.

    For me The Town of Light was the most shocking game of 2016. I really wouldn’t say it is so much cliche, since it pretty accurately shows what had happened in these European asylums back in 1930s and 40s. So yes – some of the crazy things we expect or we know form “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest”, but hey – this was the real world.
    It is also not cliche since rarely in the walking simulators you have so much realism and history, and not fantasy/post-apo/imagination. Let alone this game contains a sigle scene (at the end) that is one of the most scary/shocking scenes in the video games ever.

    So I’m really happy to see the new version coming – I hope it will address the only real clumsiness this game has for me – the poor effect of the decisions on the game story. You seem to have a promise of 2-4 variants of some chapters but they differ only very slightly.
