Best PC gaming deals of the week

This is the second week in a row where we’ve been essentially spoilt for choice when it comes to PC download discounts around there on the wild, wild web. While I still haven’t quite gotten over the excitement of Full Throttle Remastered being a month away, there’s plenty still to check out here. Grim Fandango, anyone? As we tend to do most weeks, we’ve got deals that’ll work in the UK, deals that’ll work in the US and some deals that will work in both the UK and US, as well as presumably many other places. It’s a small world after all. Let’s get started.

Telltale, known for narrative-heavy and weirdly cel-shaded adventure games is the subject of a sale this week over at the Humble Store. If you’ve missed out on games like The Walking Dead, Batman: The Telltale Series, The Wolf Among Us or Puzzle Agent, you can pick a few of them up now with a nice discount.

Telltale Games Week from Humble Store

Grim Fandango is one of the greatest adventure games ever made and if for no other reason, this Double Fine Sale over at is absolutely worth taking a look at. You can get the remastered version for £2.09 / $2.48 / €2.39 and it’s absolutely worth that. There are other games available too, conveniently timed after the announcement of Full Throttle Remastered’s release date. Double Fine Sale from

Steam’s having itself a 2K publisher sale this weekend with a reported ‘up to 85%’ off some of the company’s biggest titles. For those not keeping up with 2K specifically, this means Civilization 6 is down to £39.99, Mafia 3 is down to £11.54, XCOM 2 will cost you £13.99, Sid Meier’s Pirates! Costs just £1.49 and, um, WWE 2K17 is available for £29.99. If that’s your thing.

2K Publisher Sale from Steam

In case you missed it, this month’s Humble Monthly big-deal game is Jonathan Blow’s island puzzler The Witness. You’ll get that, along with a stack of other PC games when you sign up to Humble’s monthly subscription for $12 (around £10), which is rather nice. The folks at Humble say you can cancel at any time, too, in case that helps.

US Deals

If you have yet to get your VR on in a big way but you’re considering it seriously, you can grab a Vive right now from NewEgg and get a Radeon RX480 4GB graphics card for free. That is, as long as you order before Monday. That card is around a $185 value, too, so it ain’t half bad as a freebie.

PC accessories come in all shapes, sizes and styles. If your particular style choices lean towards eye-burningly bright blue, you may want to pick up a Fallout 4 themed SteelSeries gaming mouse or Siberia headset while they’re on a clearance sale at the Bethesda Store. The mouse will set you back $20 (down from around $70) and the headset costs $30, down from $115.

    Bear in mind the Vive still costs more than buying an Oculus Rift and an RX 480 at full price. But at least this gets it reasonably close in value for money, if you have a particular reason to want the Vive.

      Doesn’t room-scale on Oculus Rift require an additional sensor to avoid sensor shadows? That would put it at just under $660. So I guess the reason would be room-scale. Still hoping that price drop puts some pressure on the Vive, though, not that I’m in the market.

        The occlusion resistance is no different from what you get with the Vive’s 2 base stations. But sure, the covered area is smaller.

          You still need the second camera with occulus, which boosts the price. With Vive it’s all in the box. So to have the occulus on par with the Vive is $660 (currently on sale). Add the Radeon to that and you would have $845. The Vive, currently, is the better deal at $799.

            The second camera is in the box with the Touch controllers too.

            Plus you get more content with the Rift+Touch.

          This is not true. By default the Rift wants the two cameras to be in front of the player. The Vive places them in the corners of the room.

          You need a 3rd rift camera to get a 360 experience.

            That is not true. You can set the Rift up with two sensors opposite to each other. It works the same way as the Vive, except the area covered is smaller.

            (some people will only have that lesser area available anyway)

            It absolutely does not work the same way as the Vive. There are huge differences between the tech.

            The Rift setup will instruct you to put the two cameras less than 6 feet apart and in front of the player. The Vive instructions tell you to place the lighthouses in the corners of the rooms.

            You can ignore the setup instructions (and some people have) and skip the setup testing, but you are in an unsupported configuration.

            In addition, you need an extension cable for the USB connection to get the camera further away. The Vive lighthouses are not physically connected to the computer so it makes it far easier to set them up in a roomscale configuration.

            Those configurations are not unsupported, there are specifically instructions in their software and on their homepage on how to set them up. And they work fine.

            Cable length is just as much of an issue with the Vive. People don’t necessarily have power outlets all over.

            Those configurations are specifically labelled as “Experimental” and have a large disclaimer that they may not work for all setups.

            You are seriously reaching when you suggest that a power outlet is harder to find than extending your USB cable to the other corner of a room.

      Well, technical differences aside, there are people who’d rather support Valve with their money than Oculus, for a variety of reasons. Personally, if I’m going to bite the bullet on VR I’m ok with paying a premium for supporting the company that doesn’t want to do exclusives, for instance. Valve, for all their noted problems, are still gamers at heart and they seem genuinely interested in moving gaming forward with VR, not just making a buck (though clearly they’re good at making bucks and are probably going to).

      Whereas Oculus still carries around the albatross of having “sold out” to Facebook, a company with seemingly no interest in anything but making money (which admittedly is only par for the course) and headed by a man who has both stated and demonstrated numerous times that he should not be trusted.

      Despite appearances, I don’t really intend to start a console-war-style fanboi flamefest here, just provide a viewpoint of why someone might choose to spend the extra money on Vive regardless of any relative technical merit.

        Valve are doing exclusives too. They’re not putting anything on the Oculus Store.

        As for Facebook just being in it to make money, they’ve been pouring money into it at a much higher rate than Valve and HTC. But ultimately Valve and Facebook are both in this just to make money.

          It’s not marketplace exclusives people are concerned about though, it’s display exclusives. Everything on the Oculus Store is only playable if you own an Oculus headset. The Vive and any other current and future devices are locked out by design, unless you use a third party tool that incidentally enables content piracy (which wasn’t intended, and wasn’t the case until Oculus intentionally locked out what they were doing before and forced their hand). Oculus have even lied and said it would be impossible to allow content developed on their SDK to run on other headsets, but the existence of that tool proves that’s not true. Essentially, Oculus is doing the equivalent of “You can only play these games if you have an AMD graphics card, no Nvidia allowed!”, which is utterly ridiculous to have in PC gaming.

          Meanwhile on Steam, the basic framework they offer to develop for the Vive (SteamVR) also supports the Rift+Touch natively, and is open for other headset developers to add their own supported drivers for their hardware. Every title that supports the Vive is playable with an Oculus headset. That’s a significantly more consumer-friendly approach.

            Yes. If you get VR games on Steam they’re playable with Vive, Rift and the 3 or 4 other headsets that have displayed as in development recently.

            I don’t mind them having their own store-front or even exclusives on their store (not ideal, but that’s not a battle worth fighting). It’s tying it into their hardware while locking developers into Occulus only periods which grates.

            The content on the Oculus store can be run on a Vive via the Revive tool.

    I’ve read around the net that Xcom 2 is still buggy and a bit of a mess considering how long it’s been out.
    It’s down to £13 just now. Anyone here able to chip in on it’s buggyness ?
    Do you get that thing where people standing next to each other cant point guns in the right direction and fire through walls like Xcom enemy unknown ?

        Well that’s great but that doesn’t mean others have not. And there have been problems with it.Google xcom 2 bugs.

          The only problem I had was everything going yellow and purple on the end level. Very pretty if you’re a synthwave fan, but not the greatest. However a restart cured it. If you’ve been a PC gamer for a long time you’ll have dealt with worse and I really don’t think it’s rep is so bad as to deprive yourself of a satisfying strategy experience.

            Had the same thing happen plus one of my grenadiers could not fire grenades in a certain direction, like there was an invisible wall in front of her.

      There were certainly a lot of little visual bugs like that when I played through it, but they were purely cosmetic. I watched all of Zemalf’s Ironman run recently and he encountered more than a few “spotted through a wall” issues, and once or twice a “can’t target enemy that clearly should be targetable”, but he was using a lot of mods so it’s hard to say if that really counts.

      The most glaring problem I had was with the “Make Items Available” buttons on the squad loadout screen, which often did strange things like clump together and have their hitboxes in the wrong spots. I hate to be that guy, but I suspect this is due to bad screen-size handling because someone expected the game would always be run at the same resolution and aspect ratio (consolitis).

      From what I’ve seen around the internet, a lot of people mistake the interaction of the more obscure gameplay rules for bugs too, so it might be over-reported.

      Personal opinion: Buy the game, it’s great. It really takes the innovations of the first game (over XCOM, that is) and builds on them to become its own thing. If you encounter game-breaking bugs in the first two hours, go ahead and refund it I guess, but I think this is unlikely.

        Worst bug I ever encountered was one where enemy units would not fall through a broken floor and some would not be hit until they were discovered. Ended up reloading that mission probably 20 times until it gave me an outcome where I didn’t lose any units.

        This was near launch mind you.

      I’m not going to lie to you, I’ve encountered quite a few bugs, including cases of enemies and soldiers being able to shoot through floors and walls. If you have quite a few mods going the game can start really slowing down after a few hours, though a session restart fixes that and the game can’t be blamed for any poorly optimised mods. Occasionally the game will decide that it’s appropriate for one soldier to enter super slow-mo mode which means he takes ages to do anything and there’s likely a few other bugs I’ve forgotten about.

      However I say buy it! It’s a fantastic strategy game in its own right and some of the mods are just sublime. I’d recommend a fairly vanilla playthrough for your first try, maybe go for True Concealment, which means Mission Timers don’t start counting down until your squad is revealed which gives you a little bit more flexibility, if nothing else.

      Enjoy the game then go for Long war and get ready to be amazed and raged!

          I’d recommend against True Concealment, or any mod for that matter, for your first playthrough. There is a reason the developers have the gameplay work the way it does and you do them a disservice by judging the game based on someone else’s idea of how it should work.

          Personal opinion of course, it’s your game once you’ve bought it so do whatever.

            I’m a vanilla initial play through kinda guy. Even Bethesda games, which seems rare these days.

      I installed Xcom 2 a couple of weeks and had significant (but not game breaking) performance issues. Bizarre stuff – loading time took forever, the cut scenes were choppy to all. I parked it and will pick it up later.

      Its just sloppy. Xcom 1 was rock solid, I can’t see how/why this the sequel is so different.

        I’m getting choppy frames as well. Going down to 8 fps at times. Lowered a few settings but it still jumps around a lot.

        Enjoying the game play though.

    If you’re interested in some Lego faffery, a Lego Worlds Steam key is 20% off at for another few days, and using the spring10 code at checkout gets you another 10% off that.

    Yeah, it’s not bad. The camera is odd but not a deal-breaker, and the controls with an xbox pad aren’t too bad either. You can climb things, so it’s not like the ledge searching of some third person 3D games. It takes forever to accomplish anything, so expect a console-ish game where you run around and do silly things for a long time before you really get to the building. It’s probably at its best if you plan on doing some co-op with kids. I haven’t had any serious performance issues on a dual-core computer running an HD 7750 on high graphics, so that’s good too. That may change if anything on-screen explodes, but the early frame rate issues seem to be resolved.

      A correction if anyone reads this: the second world has a bunch of lava which I assume involves special lighting or something, and the frame rate drops quite a bit. That’s on low end hardware, but still, expect to do some fiddling with quality settings.

    SteamWorld Heist, as mentioned favourably (and deservedly so, IMO) here recently, is 50% off for a week on Steam. Unusually, the DLC extra missions are also 60% off. Which is nice.
