Total Warhammer 2 trailer shows Avatar action

What’s going on in Total War: Warhammer 2 [official site]? Watch the “first in-engine trailer” released today and you’ll learn that it’s a vicious retelling of James Cameron’s Avatar with lizards and elves replacing humans and smurfs. You’ll also get a sense of how cute those lizards are, which is: very. Have a look below!

Here’s the official blurb on what the Lizardman plan in Total Warhammer 2:

“It is time to march on the Fallen Gates. The Elf servants have blasphemed not just by leaving Ulthuan, but by daring to interfere with the Cosmic Gates – an ancient device that can open a portal into the Realm of Chaos. For such a heinous transgressions, the Elves must be punished as decreed by Mazdamundi, the Lord of the Solar City.”

Interestingly, all factions in Twarhammer 2 are interested in the Great Vortex, a place of great power and danger. They each have a path to victory through it and, unusually for Total War, players can actually lose if their rivals achieve their goals first.

Twarhatwo will feature the Lizardmen, High Elves, Dark Elves, and a yet-unrevealed fourth faction who couldn’t possibly be the Skaven because everyone knows Skaven aren’t real. It’s visiting different lands to the first game, though players who own both will be able to play on a campaign map combining the two.

The game is due out some time later this year.

Twarhammer? I first read that as Twathammer. My favorite nickname is still Total Warhammer or Total Waagh!

Somehow ‘twathammer’ sounds like a very different game.

      • Chiron says:

You’ve not met a certain kind of Warhammer player or you’d agree Twathammmer was very appropriate…

    • Victor A Yorke says:

Would that it twar so simple…

  2. ColonelFlanders says:

Seriously though if it isn’t Skaven I’m gonna cut some bitches

Who else even exists in the new world? Aren’t skaven pretty much the only possible choice?

      Maybe Sigmarines from the future!

      • Chiron says:

        Vampire Coast Pirates!

      • Stompywitch says:

        Amazons.

        • RedViv says:

          Amazon Skaven.
Giant rolling blobs of permanently birthing flesh and udder, all in Xena wigs.

      • ColonelFlanders says:

If you’re referring to the Age of Sigmar bollocks then I wouldn’t know. I haven’t played or read any fluff since ’12 when I decided I didn’t really like 8th edition that much, so my hopes lie in having a video-game warp lightning cannon blow up in my face.

      • Imperialist says:

Well, they are adding the Southlands as well…which could mean Tomb Kings, essentially. Regardless, whichever faction isnt the 4th announced one, is likely to be DLC.

          Drib says:

I thought it was just the new world, not tinkering with the old map other than to slap them together some time after release.

The south and east (tomb kings/Arabia, ogres) would be the third game, right?

    • DarkFenix says:

Skaven were already quite explicitly confirmed in the first trailer for the game. The four this time are Lizardmen, High Elves, Dark Elves and Skaven. Tomb Kings will be the first race DLC most likely.

  3. Gothnak says:

Don’t like Lizardmen, don’t like High Elves… The good news is though as long as something cool gets added, i’ll certainly enjoy killing them.

  4. Banks says:

Looks like a huge improvement over Total Warhammer (setting wise) and I hope that those maps make it into the final game. Maps are always so boring in total war games.

  5. dongsweep says:

Looks like we will have to buy the blood dlc again (after waiting 2 months for it to release). Very excited for this game but their nickel and diming on things like that are hard to defend.

    • BillyTheKid says:

If you bought the blood DLC for the first one you get it in Warhammer 2 from day 1. They just never show it off in the promotional videos to maintain that sweet, sweet T rating.

  6. CacarotV says:

Still reeling from the choice of engine, loss of one on one duels and the lack of depth in the campaign.

    Cool trailer though

    • Imperialist says:

Is this by chance a misguided belief that this is somehow in any way shape or form a sequel or spiritual successor to Warhammer: Mark of Chaos? The only cool thing about that game WAS the cool trailer in the beginning.

      • bills6693 says:

Have to say I actually enjoyed the heck out of Mark of Chaos. I was younger then, but still. Want to play it again but can’t find it for sale anywhere digital, and don’t have a disk drive so buying an overpriced disk on amazon is pointless unfortunately

  7. Carlos Danger says:

Has to be the worse trailer they have put out to date but does not derail the hype train in the least.

    • Gothnak says:

It’s in game rather than FMV, about 1000 times cheaper to make and whoever is going to buy this won’t care.

  8. Rizlar says:

Lizardmen truly are the best of all men. Praise Sotek!

There’s another one of these coming out already?

    • MisterFurious says:

They said from the very beginning that they were going to do three of them. It’s not a surprise.

  10. Bobtree says:

I strongly dislike the wobbly camera, close shots, and editing in this trailer. It’s way below CA’s usual quality.

  11. Fnord73 says:

Have they released a patch that makes the AI capable of defending their own artillery from flanking attacks yet?

  12. animal says:

Where’s my Rome 1 remake guys?
