The Foxer

Rumpus, the youngest of the defoxing annexe cats, is a regular Heinz-Wolfgang Schnaufer. Every day as dusk approaches he scrambles onto the roof of the log store to await the evening bat exodus. Every morning Maxine arrives to find the front step littered with downed Pipistrelles. We’ve tried collar bells, security lights, and stern ultimatums but our one-cat Kammhuber Line just keeps on killing.

This cryptic collage has a hidden theme.

  1. Little_Crow says:

Woody Harrison playing Micky Knox in Natural Born Killers in the middle

    phuzz says:

Starting from the top, that’s a “Gabbet Fairfax H – Mars” pistol (the name on the frame is a bit of a giveaway).
    Picture is from this auction.

  3. Lazzars says:

That’s the Imperial Crest from Star Wars on the top right.

  4. mrpier says:

Left side, looks like a stick of Cinnamon.

And a pair of drumsticks in the middle.

    phuzz says:

The map at the back is of the north eastern part of Italy, roughly covered by this map

  6. Shiloh says:

The Russian thingy is a 13 rouble stamp from 2012 celebrating 75 years since the Moscow-San Jacinto transpolar flight…

EDIT: undertaken in a Tupolev ANT-25.

  7. mrpier says:

That’s a Tupolev ANT-25 on a commemorative stamp illustration of the Moscow-San Jacinto transpolar flight.

  8. Rorschach617 says:

Bottom Centre, looks like a Casspir APC or something derived from that design. Still searching.

    • Rorschach617 says:

I’d stake my lunch on that being a version of the Casspir Mk3 or NG2000. But that is as far as I can take that clue.

Sidenote: There is an embroidered Casspir at the Iziko South African National Gallery.

The car on the mid right (just above the cinnamon) is the “#8 G & W Motorsport-BMW Picchio DP2” (picture from here), driving at Watkins-Glen in 2003.
It’s basically a custom built vehicle with a BWM V8.
    (It finished 8th)

    • AbyssUK says:

Built by Picchio in a little village called Ancarano, Teramo..

Which it looks like might be dead centre of that map in the background…

    phuzz says:

The cover bottom right is for a booklet called “Stalwart and Strong”, about the US 87th Infantry.
    The full text is here.
The particular copy in the Foxer seems to have been taken from a public library.

  11. phlebas says:

I haven’t found the exact image yet, but is the cowboy Gene Autry?

    • mrpier says:

I’m on the same track, but damn, those old cowboy shows have a lot of merchandise.

        phuzz says:

Would never have known who he was without phlebas, and the exact picture is from:
        “Ride, Tenderfoot, Ride” (pic here).
“Cowboy Gene Autry (Gene Autry) has inherited the Belmont Packing Company, a meatpacking business, thanks to a favor his father once did for the owner. This pits him against Ann Randolph (June Storey), who owns a competing business. Despite the competitive nature of their relationship, a romance blossoms between the rival business owners. But, when Anns employees attempt to sabotage Genes company, Gene and his buddy, Frog (Smiley Burnette), are forced to stop them.”

  12. DanMunchie says:

There’s a black and white cross superimposed on the image – reference to the Balkenkreuz?

  13. Gothnak says:

I was out shopping, you guys (A gender neutral term utilised to be a familiar tone to a group of people) solved it all already?

      phuzz says:

There’s still the cemetery(?) at the bottom to ID.
(I’m pretty sure it’s not managed by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission as the headstones are spaced very far apart).
Also, no one’s even taken a crack at the theme yet.

  14. Gothnak says:

    Is it Woodpecker?

    Picchio means Woodpecker in Italian.

Gene Autry and Mary Lee sang the Woodpecker song?

    Woody Harrelson? :p

The Marche Region of Italy (Sort of covered by that map) has a picture of a woodpecker as part of it’s logo. link to

    There is an Imperial Woodpecker.

    • phlebas says:

Ooh, apparently there’s a Cinnamon Woodpecker too!

    • Gothnak says:

There’s a brand of Drumstick called Woodpecker Hornbeam?

Faith No More did a song Woodpecker from Mars (Pistol)

      Woodpeckers eat ANTs… Vague…

    • mrpier says:

Woodpeckers make a sound that is called drumming.

    • Little_Crow says:

      There’s a cinnamon woodpecker, too

There was a woody woodpecker episode called ‘Woodpecker from Mars’ for a tenuous link to the pistol

    • AbyssUK says:

The insignia of the 87th Infantry Division is and acorn and guess what you can get an acorn woodpecker.. too tenuous ?

      • Rorschach617 says:

The 87th is the Golden Acorn Division. There is a Golden-Fronted Woodpecker if that is any less tenuous :)

      • Rorschach617 says:

Weirdly, Walter Lantz (Woody Woodpecker’s creator) was kept awake through his honeymoon by an Acorn Woodpecker outside his cabin.
That led to the character’s creation.

    • Rorschach617 says:

      Better than what was thinking.

    • Little_Crow says:

There is a woodpecker hill cemetery, but I’m pretty sure it’s not it.
Just got distracted by an interesting article about it I thought I’d share
      link to

      • Rorschach617 says:

I was vaguely interested in the article you linked until I came across this phrase.

“… it dropped suddenly and catapulted inmates into the air with enough force to break their necks…”

I did an honest-to-god double take on that bit

      • Little_Crow says:

You should stick it out if you hadn’t read it all – that bit just proves what we already know, Humans are incredibly inventive when it comes to killing other Humans

      • Rorschach617 says:

I did read it all and, as someone who is against the death penalty, I was saddened by the Arridy case and the general disinterest in what should a solemn and respectful plot of ground.

        Still… catapulted?

        • unacom says:

Yes. It´s the Arridy-case for me too, that makes this article a hard read.

    • Gothnak says:

Anyone know how that South African Casspir APC fits in?

  15. Gothnak says:

I wish there was some kind of job i could do to use my foxer theme cracking skills in that would earn me money :). I may be crap at identifying things, but boy can i find a theme quickly.

    • Rorschach617 says:

I think we should make some sort of crime-detecting team. Police forces around the world bring their clues to us, we de-fox them and Gothnak can find the common thread.

If its not a money-making scheme, there is a damned good TV show in there somewhere :)

      • Gothnak says:

I’m in… But beware, if any of of you try and betray us, i’d probably notice before you started :).

  16. DanMunchie says:

The Woodpecker Song is in Ride, Tenderfoot, Ride

  17. Stugle says:

I wasn’t in time for the Foxer today, but I want to express my appreciation for ‘one-cat Kammhuber Line’. :) and I want to support Gothnak’s future career as a crime-solving Foxeteer.

    • Gothnak says:

I often end up on sporcle with my wife (no, it’s not a dodgy website) doing some of their more obscure and interesting puzzles. Maybe we need to start adding Foxers there for all of us to do in the between Foxer Downtime?

4 mins of fun, and now i have to wait a week again :(.

  18. unacom says:

Again no defoxing due to work. Great job gentlefoxers!
