Twin Peaks-inspired RPG Baobab’s Mausoleum out today

The first episode of surreal RPG Baobab’s Mausoleum [official site] is out today. That’s the news. There are no more facts in this post for you, just strange and otherworldly sentences that will make as little sense to you as they do for me. For instance, the protagonist is a vampire FBI agent eggplant called Watracio Walpurgis. You see? He’s stuck in a town called Flamingo’s Creek, population 64, which only appears in nightmares every 25 years and is populated by monsters, a wendigo and some, I don’t know, UFOs? There’s more details and a trailer below but I’m not sure if they clear anything up.

Lots there for fans of VHS flickering and garish colours. It’s inspired by Twin Peaks, Zelda and Monkey Island, says Madrid-based creator Jacob Jazz, which is an odd soup to bring to the boil. There’s a flavour of Undertale and Space Funeral to it as well, of course, but I don’t know if that’s the developer’s intention. It also features “psychedelic Russian surf music” and the turn-based combat includes the option to “Spit”, so that’s a plus.

This first episode, Ovnifagos Don’t Eat Flamingoes, is on Steam now it and lasts a couple of hours, I’m told. Three episodes in total are planned with the next one called 1313 Barnabas Dead End Drive. If nothing else, the dev has certainly got a gift for overwhelmingly obscure names.
