Northgard’s latest faction deploys armoured bears

Shield maidens and armoured bears have arrived in strategic Viking ’em up Northgard [official site] with the addition of a new faction. The Clan of the Bear have come from the north to cause trouble and conquer the land with their hardiness and, y’know, flipping great big armoured bears. Northgard is still in early access but our warboy Brendy already declared it one of the best games of 2017 so far. Bring on the bears!

These Bearpals are a hardy bunch, with the starting bonuses of gaining extra resistance during winter and also suffering less food production loss during those cold months. Their Armoured Bears can’t enter enemy territory but they can maul faces and so are good for protecting your own. The Shield Maiden, meanwhile, is a replacement for the Warchief. Her attacks aren’t strong but she’s sturdy.

Check today’s patch notes for full details on the new clan, as well as other changes.

Northgard is good stuff. As Brendan said when he Prematurely Evaluated it:

“It’s an impressively well-made thing, a finely-embroidered cloak of an RTS with all the elements sewn together in a pleasing and sensible way. Most importantly, the immediate environment around your home feels like it really influences your strategy for the whole match.”

A sale marking this update’s launch brings Northgard to £11.24/14,99€/$14.99 on Steam Early Access. Developers Shiro Games expect to launch the full version in a few months.

I wanna buy this but I have so many games already that I need to play :( Thanks to GoG and Steam sales I’m drowning in games that I wanna play, but I don’t have the time to indulge in them all.

Put this at the top of your queue, it’s an utterly amazing game.

  3. Kitsunin says:

When I first saw this, I assumed it was just another civilization management game…and it sort of is.

But compacted into a less than 2-hour experience! It really feels to me like you’re pretty much getting absolutely all the meat of a ~10~ hour game of Civilization in less than a quarter of the time. Whatever mechanic it is, if it’s missing from Northgard, I really couldn’t care less about it.

  4. Carra says:

Spent a few hours with it and I had a fun time. Not bad considering they sell it very cheap.

I’ll try it again once it leaves early access.

Has anyone been able to play with this factions yet? I’m curious about what the downsides are if the upside is a 50 food(and no labor loss, unlike warband recruitment) unit suitable both for early game expansion into infested tiles, Garrison duty, and meat-shielding against the tougher neutrals that surround strategic sites.

No use in hostile territory keeps them from being a Zerg rush apocalypse; but they sound like brutally effective units for carving out and defending a substantial chunk of the map during the phase where neutrals are the main limit to expansion, so there has to be a catch…
