Stalkerish: Survarium adds first PvE mission

The most exciting part of Survarium [official site] has always been the dream that it might one day become essentially an unofficial S.T.A.L.K.E.R. sequel. Survarium studio Vostok Games was founded by folks who formerly worked on the celebrated open-world FPS-RPG series, Survarium is set in a very similar irradiated world of artifact hunters, and Vostok have gabbed about wanting a peristent world to stalk. Survarium is still primarily a small-scale competitive PvP multiplayer shooter but it has recently taken its first teensy tiny step into PvE with the addition of a tutorial story mission.

Survarium, to refresh your memory, is a free-to-play first-person shooter about folks who hunt for ‘anomalies’ containing powerful artifacts. You know, like in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. It goes down in contaminated zones where nature has taken over and things aren’t right, like in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. But unlike S.T.A.L.K.E.R., it’s a competitive multiplayer game without all the wonderful loneliness, quiet, tension, and screaming terror.

The lone PvE mission arrived in update 0.47 earlier this month. It is just a tutorial but hey, how hungry are you for more Stalking?

When Marsh Davies Prematurely Evaluated Survarium in 2015, he didn’t dig the PvP but did have hopes for the world.

“If this article has been rather glum about the game as it’s played currently, then I must again emphasise the wonder of the world in which it’s set. Those places call me back, even if I have to experience them amid the chaotic thrash of team multiplayer. They deserve better than that endless cascade of death, though. Such vivid and mysterious spaces demand to be lived within, if only for a time.”

That’s now possible, for a very short time. As for co-op and the long-promised Freeplay mode, which would have loads of players roaming a persistent world while questing and maybe shooting each other, we’re still waiting. We probably will be for quite some time.

It sounds like Vostok are planning to create cooperative story missions first. They mentioned those in an update over Christmas and an e-mail they sent us today said “We expect to please players with the forthcoming CO-OP story missions in the foreseeable future.”

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. studio GSC Game World did return to life after several years in torpor. So far they’ve only released Cossacks 3, a remake of an RTS they released in 2001.

      Yep, that’s how I feel. I keep the name in my mind but I won’t be interested until it actually compares on some level. I hope one day it will, though.

    There was once a hope for this game…I remember playing it when the patches started with 0.1X, but for me the company has long since destroyed their reputation with the many poor game design choices for the PVP and constant teasing of PVE which never amounted to anything. I think the only glimmer I saw was some half-arsed art work of some unidentified mutant which we’ve not seen any more of since.

    They added bots a while ago, not as a step towards the PVE but rather to fix the dwindling player base. They then halved the tier system (how they attempted to “balance” matches) to also address the tiny player base.

    They had a relationship with Battle Eye before releasing Survarium but decided against using them until recently. Instead taking the ignorant stance of “nobody can cheat our system” despite constantly being proven to be wrong.

    They turned what was once a slow paced team based shooter into a simple ‘find the best rate of fire gun and rush around like a dick’. Effectively ignoring the players who cried for more tactics and favouring the CoD fanbase who they hoped to milk for premium content.

    If they one day get something PVE out there, I doubt it will match up to what they promised or what the hype was when there was indeed hope.

    Ahh well, I’ve moved on from this, just wanted to rant a bit.
    There are better PVP games out there (easily) and with Escape From Tarkov going from strength to strength I will have my Soviet stalker-esque PVE game fix too.

    Didn’t bethesda purchase the Stalker IP last year? Its too bad that neither Vostok or GSC, the actual creators, could make a ‘proper’ sequel to the great series. Then again its not like another similar premise could be created in a different hypothetical or historical nuclear tragedy, stalker fukushima anyone? (or is it too soon already)

      That rumor has been flying around since 2012, but I don’t think it ever actually happened.

        That is great news then, was not looking forward to a bethesda branded stalker. Hopefully with the success of cossacks 3 GSC can fund a sequel.

      Truth. Even Clear Sky is pretty interesting, def plenty there for someone who enjoyed the first two, not sure why that one got shat on quite so hard.

    It seems like the devs really, really don’t want to make a new S.T.A.L.K.E.R., but are afraid no one will buy their new game if they come out and admit it.

    There is a very talented man called MeshCarver on youtube who was making a really interesting stalker inspired mod for arma3 called Nova Zona
    however he has since had to shelve the project due to real life
    check it out he has made some really nice videos of his work so far
    hopefully one day he finds the time to continue his work
