Check out the new RPS forum

Update: We’re aware that some users are having trouble logging in and retrieving their old passwords. We’re working on it now and hope to have the ‘forgotten password’ emails working for everyone shortly. Thanks for the feedback so far! We’ve already made a bunch of changes to layout and categories as a result, so keep it coming.

The new forum is live! Check it out here, or read on for some other details

As mentioned earlier this week, we’ve left the wastes of vBulletin behind for the bright new future of Discourse. That means that things are different! We hope good different, but there’s a feedback thread on the forum for your own thoughts.

Note: the URL has changed. It’s now https://forum.rockpapershotgun.com/. The old URLs for boards and threads will update in a moment to the appropriate locations on the new boards, but that hasn’t happened just yet so you’ll have to update your bookmarks manually for now or keep clicking the ‘Forum’ link in the top right of the site.

There are still a few other teething problems being fixed, but those should be resolved soon. For now, hop on and we can work out together where the light switches are in our new home.

    Ewwww.

What a bizarre layout. I’m sure we’ll get used to it.

  2. GameCat says:

Why did you had to choose literally most confusing, unresponsive, unclear and user-unfriendly discussion board script? :C

    • Landiss says:

What software is that? It doesn’t even say that anywhere.

    • pfooti says:

Yeah, I’m not a big fan of Discourse. It has some attributes I like, but a lot I don’t (overriding control-F for example, and a real break with the conceptual “board” model of oldstyle forums).

That said, there’s basically no good forum software out there. They’re all bad in some way.

      • Quickly says:

All bad in what way? From what I’ve seen of IPS (eg: linustechtips.com) and XenForo (eg: thecoli.com) both seem competent board software. In the former’s case it has a nice notification system and other modern features.

Whereas I don’t think I’ve even seen a decent implementation of Discourse, they all feel similar with that heavy focus on its Q&A style design, especially the timeline which for longer discussions is messy to navigate.

That said I wasn’t a regular forum lurker so I’ll leave it up to others to give better impressions on the change.

        • FriendlyFire says:

IPS is pretty old and not all that different from vBulletin. XenForo is much nicer, but it has a really bad “paid forum” syndrome: it has a disproportionately large amount of paid addons compared to free forums like phpBB, so the bill grows really fast. I’m guessing RPS would need a few, so you’d probably see like $500 vanish quick. Might be more than they’d want for an ultimately minor part of the website.

My personal favorite right now is Flarum, but they themselves don’t recommend using it in production yet and development seems to have stalled.

        • DanMan says:

heavy focus on its Q&A style design

That’s a very fitting description for Discourse. It doesn’t seem to be made for long discussions, but for quick Q&A style posts. So exactly the opposite of the RPS forums.

I mean, how do you even jump to the latest unread post in a thread? I can’t seem to find a link for that on threads.

P.S.: I’ve heard good things about Vanilla forum, but I’ve never looked into it and it’s not free AFAIK.

      • AngoraFish says:

Overriding control-F is possibly the worst thing ever, and more than enough reason for me to stay the hell away.

    • April March says:

Probably to be consistent with the comments section. *airhorns.mp3*

    • Synesthesia says:

Eh, i kinda like discourse. Then again, I was never much of a forumite.

  3. Vilos Cohaagen says:

Wow that is hideous and unclear! Nice job.

  4. Landiss says:

I’m trying not to dislike it just because it is different, but it is hard.

  5. Landiss says:

By the way, forum terms of use are full of “company_domain” and similar.

  6. TechnicalBen says:

Bye. Thanks for all the fish.

    • alms says:

      You’re not serious, I hope?

      • TechnicalBen says:

Hope all you like. I’m dyslexic. Change your method of communication to something I cannot read, and I cannot read it.

It’s like when most people complain it’s painful around kids/loud noises. Most of the time I can get use to it. Though I’d not consider them insane for leaving the room because it’s causing them difficulty talking (I also find it near impossible to talk in a noisy room, but my solution is to not talk or listen to anyone ;) ).

What was the rationale behind this particular software?

  8. Viral Frog says:

So… looks like I’m the only one that doesn’t hate it so far?

Only complaint is with mobile, but I’m saving that complaint for when I have time to fiddle with settings. It may actually be a non-issue.

Edit: turns out I didn’t even have to fiddle with the settings at all. Rather simple to just filter the different sections of the forum as I need. Took me less than 2 seconds.

    calcifer says:

As someone who has been using forums in some form since the BBS days, Discourse is the single worst forum software by a decent margin.

Honestly, you could have migrated to pretty much anything else and it would have been better. Oh well, one more forum bites the dust…

  10. Sp4rkR4t says:

Can’t log in, forgot password says it’s found my account when I try with both username & email but doesn’t send the email.

Also, before switch was worried you would go with a basic discourse layout, you managed to make it worse, well done.

  11. DarkFenix says:

To be quite blunt, it’s fucking terrible. We’re talking quite literally one of the worst, ugliest, most user unfriendly forums I’ve ever seen, with the only competition for that title coming from other sites stupid enough to use Discourse.

Seriously RPS, you could have chosen literally anything else, you could have thrown a dart at a board covered in idea post-its, and you’d have come out with a better one than this. It’s truly horrific.

  12. ScottTFrazer says:

Site updates always prove the maxim that no good deed goes unpunished.

Someone undoubtedly put a lot of work into this. I hope they don’t read these comments.

Also, how soon until you can get the comments moved into Discourse? That’s what I’m really waiting for

    • April March says:

“The house you built fell down after a day.”
“Hey, I put a lot of work into it. I guess no good deed goes unpunished!”

  13. dangermouse76 says:

I think the rule should be if you say you dont like it you should link a to a forum that you do like.

    • Spacewalk says:

I would but it just got replaced.

      • DarkFenix says:

Took the words right out of my mouth.

      • bill says:

Come on… I know change is weird, but the old RPS forums were pretty outdated and clunky.

It’ll take a while to get used to the new ones, and we might end up missing a few things from the old ones (while probably gaining other things in return) but I don’t think you can hold up the old ones as any kind of example of a great forum.

(in terms of the software… the people are all lovely).

  14. Sin Vega says:

I had planned on posting an extremely clever remark about not having a strong opinion and therefore everyone who has any kind of opinion being wrong. But then I clicked about a bit just to see what people were talking about, fully expecting to Not Get It.

I have no idea what is going on. I clicked on a thread and the first post loaded up. After I read a few sentences, it disappeared and was replaced by what I assume is a later page of the thread. I scrolled down and the weird floaty redundant extra scrollbar says “20/43”, but when I scroll down beyond that, all the posts are blacked out (1950s CIA censored file style) and I get pushed back up the page anyway. There is no indication of how to go back to an earlier page of the thread, leaving most of the discussion completely inaccessible.

Teething problems, perhaps. But my first impressions are that it’s very fiddly, unintuitive and irritating.

I do like the colour scheme though. Light on dark can be ugly but the greyscale works quite nicely.

  15. Vinraith says:

I appreciate that the forum is being supported and worked on.

That said, at least right now, it’s ugly, unresponsive, and kinda broken. Half the time when I go to PC Gaming I’m told there are no posts in that category. Like others, I can’t get a password reset either.

  16. dracvs says:

Well I do really like discourse, of all the ugly out there, is the one that works best presently being modern, responsive and what not.

Like it very much. Plan to be much more active.

    Grizzly says:

I like it. The teething problems with catogorization are being fixed right now it seems. I’ve never actually used Discourse before, so this new thing takes a bit of getting used to, but to me it’s lightning quick and responsive, and considering the changes that have been made in hte past few hours, I suspect that the admin panel works too (which was a significant issue with Vbulletin).

  18. Bobtree says:

Having browsed QT3 quite a bit, I found Discourse quite strange at first, but I grew to like it a lot.

  19. Phantom_Renegade says:

Interesting choice. Instead of making a new forum you could have, dunno, fixed your godsdamned log-in system for comments which is the worst.

New forum looks shiny and hard to navigate.

    • alms says:

They didn’t “make” a new forum, they picked an off-the-shelf solution and migrated to it from their stale off-the-shelf solution.

I suppose the transition was in large part motivated by security issue: vB4 was old and only received security fixes, and I’m not so sure how many either.

The “either/or” approach is a logical fallacy, BTW, they can improve the comments AND the forum, it’s not like they have to choose one and one only.

  20. causticnl says:

so I finally received email to reset my password, only the link forwards to a fishy webhost, looks like the spammers found the new forum.

    • Mana_Garmr says:

Yeah, I got my reset mail this morning and that is one questionable looking link.

I just copied the visible text of the link and put that into a new tab and it worked fine, but links with different underlying addresses than the presented text are generally something that make me delete mail.

  21. kuertee says:

User experience comments: (1) For long posts (e.g. Elite discussion), pagination is better than the infinity scroll. (2) Generally, the last post is the most relevant in the thread. Best to present that first rather than the top of the thread. Could the software auto-scroll to last post on open? (3) Allow quick switch for dark text on light background.

Usability: could get used to it.

  22. bill says:

I like it, it’s much better than the old one already.

There are some things I need to get used to, and a few bugs/tweaks that’d be nice.

But overall, nice job with getting the old forum content into the new forum *mostly* intact…. that must have been a pain in the ass.

Everyone will hate it of course, because they always hate every update to every website ever. Oddly, websites tend to be much better now than 10 years ago… not sure how that happened. ;-)

  23. Rich says:

If you’re going to use infinite scrolling, why not put the newest posts at the top? Who wants to read about a Humble Bundle that came out five years ago?

    • bill says:

I can’t login to test this, but i feel like it’ll remember your place in the threads.
Assuming it does remember where you left off, it’d make more sense to do things chronologically.

If not, just click on the number at the bottom of the timeline.

  24. bill says:

I’ve been playing around with it, because I can’t actually log in as it doesn’t recognize my password and isn’t sending me a reset email… but it seems pretty nice overall.

There a few things from the old forum that haven’t carried over well (mostly image links/embeds and youtube embeds, it seems), but on the other hand it’s much faster and slicker and nicer to read.
Some things have improved (oddly, locally embedded images, which I never used because they looked rubbish on the old forums now look much nicer) and there are some nice little UI touches such as pop-up login box (if i could log in!), keyboard shortcuts (j/k ftw… did the old forum have those?) and being able to click on the top/bottom of the timeline to jump there, or use the links at the bottom of the first post to jump around, or being able to filter a thread by a user, etc…

  25. Rich says:

Are gravatar profile pics working for everyone else? It can’t find the one I have associated with my email address.

  26. Deekyfun says:

Forum login also not working for me. It doesn’t recognise my email address when I try to reset the password. When I tried a different email it did work, but the reset email didn’t show up.

  27. Aetylus says:

I was going to sign up. But it requires a 10 character password. Every other website in the known universe requires 8 characters, so my personal password algorithm only caters for 8 characters. Thus I can’t sign up with completely rearranging my use of the internet. I feel lost.

  28. Mac says:

Sorry, but I hate white text on black background – it gives me really strange vision after reading – it’s like the image of the text remains with me for a short period.

Please let me know when you change it back so I can go back to reading the forums without discomfort.

It’s alright, I suppose. More attractive than what I’m used to, but I’m not yet used to it. At least it doesn’t sort by popularity or some useless anti-social nonsense like that.

I’ll put this in the actual feedback thread at some point, but for now, here: I was ecstatic to see a per-thread search option since I manually browser-searched through 37 pages of thread full of video load delays just the other day, but I was less ecstatic to find that it didn’t present results I know exist and which it even highlights when I visit the thread manually from the search page. Hopefully the indexer just needs to catch up with the 144 years of posts or something.

  30. bill says:

Did anyone else completely fail to notice the search and menu icons in the top right corner?
Dark grey icons on a dark grey background doesn’t really stand out! ;-)

PS/ The forum link in the main site’s footer still needs to be updated.

  31. alms says:

Kind of weird to see the posts claiming Discourse is a complete train-wreck and the absolute worst. Problems with passwords notwithstanding, which I’m sure RPS will do their best to fix…

Those of you who are familiar with my nick will probably know that I’m never been among the vB haters; similarly I do not count myself among the Discourse haters.

It has a boatload of QoL improvements over stale old vB4.

So I love it then? Nope, it’s hardly perfect and certain design choices can be heavily criticized, though the positives seem to far outstrip the negatives so far.

Other things simply don’t work as promised; search, for instance, if not worse, is on par with vB. This may be a bit of a problem for the archivists among us, until search engines have caught up with the new software.

All in all, think I’ll survive.

  32. Laurentius says:

Well pagination for long threads that I often visit like ‘what you are playing” or “screenshot thred” is essential, scrolling is nightmare. I hate dark theme. Alsi I can’t log in or change my password. I am old and grumpy and hate change but this is really suprisingly awful.

    • alms says:

Yes, I’m not crazy about endless scroll either, but if I’m getting you right, the problem with WYP/Screenshot should fix itself after your unread watermark is reset? or were you referring to something different?

The dark theme, if I’m not mistaken, is simply an inverted light, I’ve switched to light and keeping my fingers crossed that we get an actual dark theme. That would be an improvement over the old forum.

    • bill says:

I’m assuming (fingers crossed!) that it’ll remember where I was in a thread if i can ever log in.

Have you tried the J/K keys for moving through a thread at speed? Those seem really nice.
Reminds me of good ole Google Reader…

  33. Donjo says:

It looks a bit nicer than the old forum style but it’s immediately shitter. Pagination is totally necessary – no one wants to have to scroll through a whole thread to get to the newest comment. Images aren’t displayed on the screenshots thread, if they were it would probably take a very long time to load – it would have to load every single image ever posted!!. Did no one think about this? It’s one of the most popular threads and its pinned to the top.

    • alms says:

You can press End to jump to the end, or drag the scroll bar, no need to load all the posts.

Posted your remark about inline images in the relevant thread.

    Don Reba says:

The design, with grey text on grey background, looks like the page stopped loading halfway.

  35. ZakG says:

Nasty. It was the principle reason i stopped using QT3 forums, back then the dev had not evolved Discourse to a point it was usable behind a proxy, but it seems slightly more functional now. Having said that i cannot see where to ‘log in’ to the forums now, so this might be one of my last posts sadly.

Good luck going forward, but this brave new world of terrible tech design needs to die (a little like mullets did in the 90’s). Windows 8 GUI has a lot to answer for.

  36. Tritagonist says:

Since when is it a good idea to use dark-grey text (30% bright) and icons (16% bright) on a dark-blue (13% bright) background? Is contrast no longer a thing?

I hope this mentioned other, brighter, skin works when I (eventually) manage to log-in, because this is pretty rough going.

  39. DanMan says:

The password reset emails are only being sent out around 2am seemingly and by the time I get to read them (10am in this case) the link in them has already expired….

    This is getting annoying.
