The Foxer

Warm-up Foxer (Where am I?)

I’m at the junction of three roads, all of which are named after rivers. I can see an airship. If I walked north ten paces I’d end up on a railway line. The country I’m in has a female head of government and has qualified for the FIFA World Cup twice. I’m in an oceanic climate zone. Mesopotamia is 100 miles away. The town I’m in has something in common with a Manic Miner level. A famous PC game designer grew up here.

Crosspics are taciturn crosswords. They don’t have themes.

    G5 Down – Lancer (?)

  2. Artiforg says:

A6 down looks like Eve from The Binding of Isaac.

I 11 across, the red forehead adornment is called a Bindi or Tikka (if my memory is correct).

  3. Gothnak says:

4A Down looks like the character from DOUBLE DRAGON (Either fit)

  4. Gothnak says:

E11 Down looks like Kingdom of LOATHING

  5. Arioch_RN says:

    Is a10 an Ambush map?

Edit: I think it’s this map: link to boardgamegeek.com

  6. Gothnak says:

    D7 DOWN – PALPATINE

  7. Gothnak says:

    C9 Down – VENEZUELA

  8. AFKAMC says:

G5 across – could be LANDSKNECHT?

This is a guess, by the way.

  9. Artiforg says:

    D7 down is McDiarmid.

Ah Gothnak got in first with Palpatine, both fit in letter count.

  10. AFKAMC says:

    K1 across – Grumman WIDGEON

  11. AbyssUK says:

C8 across : The patrulla aguila, a spanish air display team. They fly Casa C-101 Aviojets … none of these words fit…

    Warm-up foxer

I suspect this is in New Zealand, but don’t know enough about Manic Miner or PC game designers to continue

    • Stugle says:

I’m there with you: New Zealand is one of six countries that have qualified twice for the FIFA World Cup. It’s got a female head of government. There’s a Mesopotamia Station (a sheep station, whatever that is) on the South Island. Dunedin looks to be about 100 miles away from that station and it has a railroad track, but I haven’t seen any obvious riverine street names.

      • Stugle says:

I wonder: are there earthquakes in Manic Miner? If so, it might link to Christchurch, which was hit by a significant earthquake in 2011.

    • Gusdownnup says:

Here looks good for the warmup foxer.

  13. AFKAMC says:

    G1 down – MALAWI

  14. Gothnak says:

12A Down to fit the J i reckon is a BAJA buggy.

Which means 10A Across is certainly AMBUSH.

  15. Gothnak says:

    E1 Across – RIGA

(Searched for 4 letter cities, Europe :))

  16. Gothnak says:

E14 Across – FA (Don’t think anyone else saw it was part of the puzzle either)

  17. Stugle says:

    K9 across – AGOUTI

  18. ylla says:

I’ve got a grid going, but can’t think of any good way to share it.

Answers with several letters in then:
    i1 – L***N***E
    k1 – W***E**
    e11 – **A*B*O*

  19. Gothnak says:

    So, E11 isn’t LOATHING then,

Which means E6 ACROSS can be CATNIP, looks a lot like this:

  20. phlebas says:

D15 down is the old American Airlines logo – AA

  21. Gothnak says:

I was wondering if A1 was Diana or Artemis painted by someone, i can see the top of a quiver. and an arrow in 6A i think.

Also, what is 15D Down? _A

And 4A DOWN – Looks like Double dragon, especially haircut, but teh clothes are wrong.

  22. ylla says:

This is what I think is left:

    a2 a *****
    a2 d **O*I*
    a4 **O*A*
    a6 ***
    a8 **A
    h3 *R*D*

    • phlebas says:

      a2d is Thomas More’s UTOPIA:
      link to bl.uk

which fits with HUNTRESS at a1a.
      a4d is TROJAN.
      a6d is EVE.

a8d could be SKA, from the black and white squares?

      • ylla says:

        OK, having fixed the grid:

        a4 T*O*A*
        a6 E**
        a8 S*A
        h3 *R*D*

        And I’m going to pack!

        • AbyssUK says:

I think we just need H3 down _R_D_

Pro tip, powerpoint and make a 15×12 table :)

          • phlebas says:

SKA isn’t definite – I can’t find an image that quite matches. I haven’t found anything more likely though.

Am tip: Save the image and scrawl solutions on it with Windows Paint :)

          • AbyssUK says:

I think H3 down is a picture of a pistol with a shoulder stock, sometimes calleda broom handle.. perhaps H3 down is BROOM.. but doesn’t fit with WIDGEON

          • AbyssUK says:

Got it its a BREDA gun :) can go home now… late for bus!

          • Gothnak says:

Oooh, 1 minute in it :).

          • AbyssUK says:

            full grid
            link to ibb.co

sorry for the dodgy host in a hurry i really do need to catch a bus!

          • AbyssUK says:

Dont panic Roman… i caught my bus and got home.. the SKa didn’t sit well on my mind… thats because its SPA… its the logo from the Spa Francorchamps racing circuit!
Cannot be bothered to change the image now.. fun weekend everybody!

  23. Gothnak says:

Never having identified a gun on a foxer before the experts, i’m going for a H3: BREDA 30
