Just Cause 4 officially announced, shows wild weather

As if swinging from hostile helicopters on a grappling hook, gliding around on a wingsuit, and causing so very many explosions weren’t dangerous enough for Rico Rodriguez, in Just Cause 4 he’ll also be fighting through tornadoes, sandstorms, and blizzards. Publishers Square Enix today formally announced Avalanche Studios’ next explosive sandbox, surprising no one after recent leaks, and it looks nifty. The storms in Avalanche’s Mad Max were astonishing, and I’m certainly up for launching myself into a tornado. Watch the announcement trailer below.

Just Cause 4 sends Rico to rumble with the Black Hand, mercenaries he’s fought in the first and third games. It’ll have four biomes–rainforest, grasslands, alpine, and desert–for Rico to run, drive, fly, and murder across, each with their own special weather hazards.

This video has developers talking about exciting things like even more features and nuance for the grappling hook, so Rico can dick about even more and cause even better disasters with the cables.

Just Cause 4 is slated to launch via Steam on December 4th.

Avalanche are awfully busy these days, also working on Rage 2 with Id Software as well as their own roboshooter Generation Zero. The company’s just been bought too.

“We started this game thinking about what the player wanted.” [Player flies across the shot standing on a car floating from four balloons while something explodes in the background.] So it seems they’re in tune with the audience, then.

I loved Just Cause 2 and 3, and 4 looks like more of the same… but it just looks like more of the same. Oh, with tornadoes.

  3. Spuzzell says:

Loved Just Cause 3, though I did want it to be harder while less frustrating.

    If that makes sense.

It’s a lot of fun being able to steal anything the enemy throws at you, but it does sort of lower the fear and excitement of a fuck off giant helicopter arriving when instead of terrified running for cover, squirting urine at every step, you’re just thinking “ah good I needed one of those”.

Hope they learned from the JC3 mistakes and issues and make this one more fun again like 1 and 2.

This trailer looks very interesting! For one thing, I didn’t expect the game to come out this year. But for another, even more important thing, it’s surprising and encouraging to see that it seems to continue the storyline from Just Cause 3’s DLC expansions! The idea of Rico fighting full-time against the Black Hand, who are pretty much Rent-a-Nazis, and striking back against what I presume is their weather control technology that they stole in JC3’s add-ons… it’s just so bloody cool! Bring on the awesomeness, Avalanche.

If those tornadoes don’t have sharks in them, and sharks that you can ride or at least fist-fight, then I’m not in the least bit interested.
