Jade and Pey’j return in Beyond Good & Evil 2

A new Beyond Good & Evil 2 trailer hot out of E3 reveals that Ubisoft’s sequel/prequel isn’t nearly as far removed from the first game as assumed, as both Jade and Pey’j are in it. It’s pretty cryptic, as Jade seems to be with those naughty Alpha Sections, but I’m just so happy to see my dear uncle Pey’j again.

Ubisoft also announced a scheme to include fan-made artwork and music in the game–and pay the creators for it–through Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s Hit Record. Hmm!

First up, the new cinematic trailer which raises more questions than it answers:

The very first trailer for BG&E2 all those years ago showed Jade and Pey’j, of course, but this new game seems basically a whole separate affair. How do Jade and Pey’j get from here to running an orphanage in a lighthouse together? I suppose we’ll find out as we run a spacepirate crew getting up to spacehijinks. I do like that crew and oh, that game’s whole style. Be a lovely place to explore with a pal in co-op.

Ubi want to borrow your style too. Through Hit Record, they’re soliciting submissions for all sorts of art to add to the world. Songs for the pirate radio station, state prograganda posters, revolutionary murals, religious murals, radio stings, geoglyphs to mark planets… things that aren’t the bulk of the game but will add flavour.

It’s an interesting approach to getting a variety of styles into the game, fitting its style of smooshing loads of cultures together, but it is basically spec work trading on fan goodwill. People will be paid if their work is accepted into the game, at least, but in an industry which already treats labour terribly it’s iffy.

Beyond Good & Evil 2 is coming… naw, Ubisoft know better than to talk about that already. It is still strange to see Ubisoft present Beyond Good & Evil 2 as a game that actually is happening for really reals this time, and I don’t entirely trust it, but I’m certainly glad to see more of it.

Even more excited than last year, and Hit Record is a super neat addition, based on what I’ve seen of them before it seems like this could really help enhance the game.

I’m guessing we won’t be snapping photos this time around…
    Still looks very interesting!

  3. fish99 says:

Can’t they just make a movie instead (or as well) – that trailer was phenomenal.

  4. April March says:

Wait, does the work have to be unpublished? Because if it doesn’t have to be it’s a great opportunity for any weird bands to suddenly be placed in front of a load of ears. It’s spec work, sure, but if you’ve already made a track and it’s sitting pretty on your Bandcamp page you have nothing to lose.

  5. Raoul Duke says:

They have dialed back the dire levels of edginess from the first trailer, but this still reeks of Alien: Resurrection levels of Franco-‘tude. The visual side of things is outstanding, though. Who knows what relationship it will bear to the gameplay?

  6. racccoon says:

We could add battle royale if wanted us too

    • SomeDuderr says:

Battle Royale MOBA with trading cards and lootcrates arriving via airdrops!

      It’s fucking PERFECT.

Let’s run this shit into the ground.

Hmm, they’ve come a long way from the cringe-fest of the Sweary Monkey Show trailer – my interest is genuinely piqued this time.
Still sounding a little strained on the dialogue side, but well, it’s still early days yet I suppose.

  8. Dust and Cobwebs says:

Huh. Still not entirely sold on the “realistic” character models, but sweet jesus that’s a gorgeous setting. I think this is maybe the first thing I’ve seen that makes me think they might actually remember what made the first game so great! Maybe. Have to wait and see.

Waitaminnit. Did the monkey call the captain “Shauni”? …dammit. Okay, I admit it, I’m intrigued.

It’s going to be a long five years, isn’t it?

  9. Ham Solo says:

I hope it won’t be as shallow as all the other recent open world games. Bigger doesn’t mean better.

I really hope this will be good, but I fear it could turn out to be No Man’s Sky 2.

It’s a legitimate concern given how Ancel talks up “the Universe” (I could’ve sworn a recent video limited the scope to just 1 solar system though)

On the other hand: this is Ubi we’re talking about. Regardless of how shallow it may be, I don’t think it’s ever fair to accuse an Ubi open world of being “devoid of content” a la NMS or Sea of Thieves.

  10. Megatron says:

Wow. That’s space-porn and no mistake. Set nipples to Stunned, Captain! If I can see anything like that in game I’m not only buying myself a copy I’ll get my entire family a copy as well.

  11. Kingseeker Camargo says:

I despise the direction they took with the visuals more and more with each new trailer.

  12. geldonyetich says:

Somehow I knew this was Beyond Good & Evil from the opening sweep over the planetary rings.

But I kind of feel like I missed a few games and/or fanfics if Jade went from being a meek stealthy pacifist idealist photojournalist to a big, loud bad guy mercenary, sword out, who would think nothing of crushing a motley crew of happy pirate anarchists between the pincers of her monolithic corporate death ship.

If they wanted to surprise me, they’ve succeeded, but at what cost for our mental image of the protagonist of the previous game?

  13. Rubicon says:

Supposedly this is a prequel, which makes Jade’s turn as an evil warlord mystifying out of context. I wonder how they’ll make this jibe with her personality in the original?

    • wiiiiilllllll says:

I’ll bet my left elbow she’s brainwashed. Gotta be.

    • Dust and Cobwebs says:

Seems simple enough to me. The first game establishes that “Shauni” was the original source of the DomZ High Priest’s power, and was later taken in an attempt to destroy him. The new game is likely setting up that very same chain of events, so “Jade” is with the “bad guys”. As for personality, she did clean out four different pirate lairs in the original game, so I’m not entirely seeing the difference? (j/k)

Seriously though, if you pay attention to the High Priest’s dialogue, it sounds a lot like the “good guys” actually brainwashed Shauni into believing she was Jade. Of course we don’t know the truth of any of this. Hopefully the new game will clear up some of these questions.

I love BG&E, but they’ve messed around with the (supposed) sequels and apparently the characters so much that I’m not sure I really care anymore.

BG&E was one of the games I could point my daughter towards as it has a great positive main character and great feels.
This one is not like that.
