Fortnite V9.01 Patch Notes (May 15 2019)

Weapons + Items

  • Tactical Assault Rifle
    • Available in Rare, Epic, and Legendary variants.
    • Available from Floor Loot, Chests, Supply Drops, and Vending Machines
      • Fully Automatic
      • 30 Round Magazine
      • Deals 22/23/24 damage
      • Headshot Multiplier of 1.75x
      • This weapon has a tight spread in close quarters but is less effective at long range when compared to other Assault Rifles.
  • Reduced Baller health from 200 to 150
    • The primary goal of the Baller is to provide fun and exciting mobility. We feel that it still has a little too much defensive agency – this change should reduce the effectiveness there while not impacting its strengths.
  • Drum Gun adjustments
    • Reduced base damage from 26/27 to 22/23
      • Since its unvaulting, the Drum Gun effectiveness has been slightly higher than we wanted. This change should reduce its combat effectiveness while still retaining its flavor.
  • Vaulted Compact SMG
    • Due to the recent addition of the Drum Gun and the brand new Tactical Assault Rifle, we wanted to reduce the availability of high rate-of-fire weapons.

Gameplay

  • Slipstream adjustments
    • Slipstreams no longer block building.
      • Trying to build up to get into a Slipstream should be an easy & intuitive experience. We noticed some cases where players would build up to the Slipstream, but due to build restrictions would take a ‘leap of faith’ and not make the jump. This should make getting into a Slipstream easier.
    • Players flying in a Slipstream will destroy player built objects when they collide.
    • Slipstreams are now disabled after storm phase 5.
      • We’ve seen a number of cases where Slipstreams caused issues during late game circles – primarily around getting pulled into the storm unexpectedly. Since the value of Slipstream mobility is limited in those scenarios, we felt it’s better to simply disable them.

Performance

  • Improvements made to level streaming performance on all platforms.
    • This will reduce cases of buildings not loading in.
  • Physics optimizations to improve performance in conduits

Tactical Assault Rifle added (new weapon)

Another new weapon, but no surprise to anyone thanks to leaks confirming the upcoming arrival to Fortnite’s weapons arsenal of the Tactical Assault Rifle. Available in Rare, Epic, and Legendary variants, this new AR seems to behave much more like an SMG than a traditional Assault Rifle: a high rate of fire but comparably low accuracy, and some huge damage drop-off at longer ranges.

The question is not whether this new weapon will outshine the SCAR or the Heavy Assault Rifle, but whether it can outshine the Drum Gun or the Suppressed SMG, as all three appear to fill the same role in Fortnite’s weapons roster at the moment. I can’t help but think it was a mistake to bring back the Drum Gun, which has yet to find a decent place in the current meta – and this would be an ideal replacement for the Drum Gun in this regard. But we’ll see what consensus the playerbase comes to over the coming weeks.

Oh, and before you ask – no, I haven’t a clue why such a close-range weapon has a scope. Bit silly, really.

Drum Gun nerf to damage

Everyone saw this coming. After the Drum Gun was unvaulted at the beginning of Season 9, players quickly realised that it literally outshined both the Tactical Shotgun and the new Combat Shotgun at any range – plus it’s a very common weapon for the value it provides, available only in Uncommon or Rare.

Now Epic have taken some quick steps towards mitigating the Drum Gun’s dominance, with a considerable damage nerf to bring the Drum Gun’s damage down from 26/27 to 22/23 (which, incidentally, is pretty much exactly the damage of the new Tactical Assault Rifle). I’m sure we’re still going to see an awful lot of players picking up the Drum Gun, simply for its immense fire rate and magazine size; but at least now there’s a little more reason for the Combat Shotgun to exist in the Fortnite meta.

Vaulted Compact SMG

Epic seem to have a vendetta against long-standing favourites of the weapons roster in Season 9, don’t they? First the Pump Shotgun was vaulted in its entirety in V9.00; and now it’s the turn of the Compact SMG to be vaulted, thanks of course to the fact that we now have both the Drum Gun and the Tactical Assault Rifle jostling for dominance in terms of powerful, high fire-rate automatic weapons.

It’s a little strange, I’ll admit, because it leaves us with just the Suppressed SMG in the entire SMG class of guns. Does this mean we’ll soon see a new SMG, or the return of the original Submachine Gun?

Slipstream fixes

Finally, a very welcome and much required change to the new Slipstream system introduced with Season 9. While certainly fascinating and a rather novel addition to Fortnite’s checkered past of mobility items and methods of travel, players discovered rather quickly that Slipstreams were unbuildable areas which could really mess up a player’s game, particularly in the later, smaller circles.

To this end, two Slipstream adjustments have been introduced with V9.01: first, Slipstreams no longer block building. The reason Epic gave, as you may have read above, is that they noticed players having trouble when building up towards a Slipstream and having to take a leap of faith in order to be caught up by the tunnels of high-powered wind. And second: Slipstreams are now completely disabled after the fifth storm phase ends (for more information on the different storm phases, check out our Fortnite Storm guide). Excellent fixes, both; providing more safety and enjoyment (and less risk) for players using this new system of travel that now dominates many of Fortnite’s most popular locations.

    • Heroes start with a treasure map that leads directly to a Mythic Avengers item.
    • Other Avengers items can be found in Chests throughout the map.
    • The goal for the Hero team is to destroy the Chitauri army and defeat Thanos.
    • Team Thanos is comprised of Chitauri Invaders and Thanos himself.
    • Chitauri Invaders start with a powerful laser rifle, an anti-structure grenade attack, and a jetpack that lets them briefly leap high into the air.
    • The first Chitauri to recover an Infinity stone will be transformed into Thanos.
    • Thanos has a powerful punch, a destructive beam attack, and the ability to jump high into the air and then smash anything in his way when he comes back down.

Weapons + Items

Bug Fixes & Improvements:

  • The Hold to Swap functionality is now confirmed upon releasing the Use button rather than when initially pressing it.

  • If a player is eliminated by fall damage while inside a vehicle, the player that last damaged that vehicle will receive the credit for that elimination.
  • Re-enabled hit markers to be server-side authoritative instead of client-side.
    • This will help prevent instances where players see hit markers but no damage.
  • Players that were Rebooted into Rifts were teleporting into the sky but would not enter skydiving mode.
  • Vehicles weren’t getting impulsed away from the Reboot Van.
  • Collision for the Reboot Van was not affecting some vehicles, allowing them to hide inside of the Reboot Van.

  • Traps were occasionally being placed in the middle of a tile rather than against a wall when using Builder Pro.
  • When exiting vehicles, the equip animation will now always play before weapons can be fired.
    • This will prevent the issue where players would occasionally see themselves fire right after exiting a vehicle before the server had time to register the shot.
  • The elimination feed text will no longer display the “eliminated by ally” message if an ally interrupts a player reboot animation.
  • Fall damage was being taken when using a Jetpack (in supported Limited Time Modes) after being launched from the Pirate Cannon.

Fortnite V8.20 Patch Notes (Mar 27 2019)

Limited Time Mode: The Floor Is Lava!

  • Summary:
    • Lava gradually rises from the lowest parts of the map, and it’s hot! Drop in and quickly loot and gather materials so you can be the first to reach the high ground.
  • Mode Details:
    • A few minutes into the match, the lava will begin to rise.
    • The lava moves at a steady speed until the entire map is covered.
    • Touching the lava will apply damage directly to your health and bounce you up in the air.
    • You can build on the lava.
    • Players will be given a small number of materials every second, to help out in those “entire map is on fire” situations.

Weapons + Items

  • The Baller no longer applies damage to players on collision.
    • The knockback/bounce effect will remain unchanged.
  • Future Baller Iterations
    • We’ve noticed a lot of discussion around the Baller, so here’s an update!
    • We’re not satisfied with the current use of Ballers, specifically in the late game. With the v8.30 update, we will release a change that will allow players to shoot through the glass of The Baller.
      • Non-glass parts will still have collision and block damage from bullets.
  • Siphon/Material Changes
    • In v7.40 we implemented a few Pop-up Cup settings as a test in core modes. After monitoring a combination of gameplay, data, and feedback, we’ve gathered necessary info to conclude this initial test. We feel it has resulted in an unhealthy level of aggressive play, diminishing other viable strategies. The following changes have been reverted in all core modes:
      • 50 Health (or Shield) based on your health when the Elimination occurs.
      • 50/50/50 materials dropped on Elimination.
      • 500/500/500 Cap on materials.
      • Harvest rate increased by 40%
      • That said, these mechanics have proven to be positive in our competitive playlists. All changes above remain enabled in the new Arena Game Mode.
  • Infantry Rifle
    • Converted to hitscan, meaning this weapon no longer fires projectiles (snipers) and now fires the same as other Assault Rifles.
    • Base damage reduced from 45/42 to 42/40.
    • Uses the same damage fall off profile as existing assault rifles.
  • Poison Dart Trap
    • Available in Uncommon Rarity.

    • Found from Floor Loot.
    • Can be triggered up to three grid cells away.
    • Fires Poison Dart projectiles a distance of three horizontal grid cells (four vertical grid cells).
    • Targets hit by darts will receive a damage-over-time effect that applies damage directly to health, bypassing any shields.
      • 10 health damage per tick.
      • 8 total ticks over 7 seconds for a total damage of 80.
      • Subsequent hits will refresh the duration of the effect, but the amount of damage per tick does not change.
  • New Foraged Items
    • Bananas
      • Instantly grant 5 health when consumed.
      • Can be found in the tropical biome.
    • Coconuts
      • Foraged by damaging palm trees.
      • When consumed, Coconuts grant 5 points of effective health over a short time. That means it will replenish shields if the player is at max health.
      • Can be found in tropical and desert biomes.
    • Peppers
      • When consumed, peppers instantly grant 5 health and also increase the player’s movement speed by 20% for 10 seconds.
      • Can be found in the desert biome.
  • The Buried Treasure directional indicator is now attached to the player and emanates from the area of the treasure map in order to improve visibility, especially while moving.
