So, yes, gamepads are used on PC as well, but they're first and foremost a console thing and given the content of this post I thought it best to place it here rather than in the PC Gaming forum. The question: if you were given the reigns, how would you build The Perfect Gamepad?

My ideal pad would borrow elements from the wares of all three console vendors. In terms of size, shape and general layout I think the Xbox 360 controller is sublime, so take that as the baseline and add -

From PS3
- Bluetooth
- Li-Ion + MiniUSB
- SIXAXIS technology

From GCN
- Dual-action (analogue + digital click) triggers
- D-Pad
- Heterogeneous face buttons

I'd probably scale up the 360 controller by maybe 10-20%, and leave it at that. It works fine for me, and see no reason to change it.

I had (well have, just don't use it anymore) the Gravis Xterminator pad for the PC and it seemed to have everything I wanted from a gamepad. Enough buttons for most any game, d-pad and analog stick, two analog shoulder buttons or rudders, two digital shoulder buttons, an analog slider (throttle) a shift button (you could have two functions for each button) and a hat-switch. I mainly used it for Freespace 2, Mechwarrior and a couple of racing games, only downsides I can remember was that the d-pad was a bit shit and it's quite large.

I would take the analog stick from the Gamecube, take the d-pad from the PS3 and put it on the Xbox 360 controller and make it a tinsy bit bigger.
