View Full Version : General A2 chat / discussion

01-01-2012, 02:52 PM
So this is a thread for general news, discussion, introductions and "Can I play with you guys?" type posts (the answer to that last question is always yes).

( link to the old thread for posterity (http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/forums/showthread.php?28-ArmA-2-Combined-Operations-We-have-our-own-server) )

As of the last full patch (1.60) there are a couple of nasty bugs in the game:

new OA 1.60.87662 hotfix/beta http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?t=129429
quite lot of server and some client crashes since final 1.60 fixed, also numerous other fixes
i recommended You try it/use it :)

also in this beta, Intel TBBv4 malloc is default

If you're not willing to try the beta patches you should/can do the following to stop excess crashes:

Remove the squad.xml links in your profile until 1.61! Logos will crash the game! (I've removed the logo from ARPS/Herosquad for now, but it'll still throw an error during briefings)
Add the -malloc=tbb4malloc_bi to your launch arguments.

Recently a friend gifted me the base ARMA 2 on Steam; I intend to buy Operation Arrowhead for it before the sale ends. I'm at home with terrible internet right now (ugh Shropshire) so I'm not downloading either yet. Once I'm back at university I'll be jumping straight in though. Are there some AARs from ARPS missions about that I can look at in the mean time to get a feel for the kind of missions you guys do?

01-01-2012, 04:04 PM
There are no written ARPS AARs i am aware of but you can browse the AARs from our weekly FOLK sessions here (http://www.ferstaberinde.com/folk/forum/viewforum.php?f=10&sid=ec99b374c5e4f39ac66e1d2626f80277). (FOLK evenings are a bit different from the ARPS Tactical Tuesday and spontaneous sessions, check the corresponding README in this forum for the details)

I try to collect the video footage of our exploits on my ARPS youtube channel here (http://www.youtube.com/user/WolfenswanARPS/videos?view=pl).

01-01-2012, 04:24 PM
Cool. I'll take a look at some of those videos.

From what I can tell, missions in ARMA are usually vs AI that have been carefully set up by designers. Are there missions that involve human players on both sides?

01-01-2012, 04:28 PM
Yup. A typical organised session (Tuesday, Sunday) is about three coop missions and one adversarial (often, but not always, played both ways). As we try to make the missions fairly short, this works out quite well.

01-01-2012, 04:30 PM
Sounds great! Now I have to wait on tenterhooks until I can actually play.

AAR thread for Folk session [Sun] 01 January 2012 (first session of 2012!) (http://www.ferstaberinde.com/folk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=394) is up on the Folk forum now. Thank you to all comrades who came along - please share your screenshots, video or just a quick write-up of your experience in that thread.

So the Ofcom decision on the ITV Arma2 footage in a docu on Gadaffi has come out (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-16677640?utm_term=BBC&utm_content=Newsline&utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter).
Apparently they also used Irish riot footage from an earlier period... Bohemia should use it as an advertisement, although I cannot believe that even someone who hasn't seen a video game in his life, would mistake it for real-life footage. IIRC, the technical's wheels were in the air or something like that.

Just thought I'd post this link to BBC News:

So did we make sure to erase all traces of Fer from the Party's books, chat logs, photo albums etc?
And to spread the rumor that he decided to retire to his bourgeois luxury villa in beautiful Siberia, which was paid for by the enemies of the People?

24-02-2012, 10:05 AM
New info (http://www.bistudio.com/english/company/developers-blog/285-scanning-the-horizon-arma-3-in-2012) on Arma 3, sounds really good!

Just a few ideas....

02-04-2012, 05:14 PM
Hehe, that vid looks awesome thanks for sharing monkey.
Maybe we should make ARPS vid with some super duper intense action? like the battle in T55 where the driver doesn't know shit around him and the commander is constantly yelling ? :D

This has nothing to do with Arma2 but it seems interesting. It's a mod for Crysis Wars:

Might try and find a copy of Crysis Wars and test it out.

13-04-2012, 01:18 PM
Those rifles were wayyyyyy to powerful! I got no thermals you can just jump out and down me, still was a funny night.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T8iBwj6d0uI this from 5 mins on I found hilarious :P

Also don't know who agrees but I always find those videos better with original sound rather than a track overlay.

New Zombie Arma2 mod by one of the Bohemia devs.
Harlander and I are interested. Any other takers to organize a zombie night and try it out?

You bet I'm interested! When do we shoot heads?
EDIT: I just read the BI forum post. Would it be possible to host this on our own server?

18-04-2012, 04:50 PM
No, it seems you need to play on their own servers. We can always try it out with Mumble and see how it goes.
I m wondering if it will be much fun thought without an aim, i.e. to escape or leave the map etc.

18-04-2012, 05:20 PM
I'd be up for that.

18-04-2012, 06:32 PM
I'm in ;)
Let's do this!

18-04-2012, 06:33 PM
Sounds good! I'd be up for that as soon as my computer arrives in a week or so.

18-04-2012, 06:39 PM
Count me in! I've been meaning to try it out since I saw a video of it last week :)

Servers run the exact same files as clients. So, yes, we can run a server with this. However, I don't have the energy to make it happen before the weekend and it might (read: almost certainly will) run poorly.

Hmm my bad then. I thought I read somewhere on the Armaholic post that you cannot run it on your own servers. Something about it needing to access a database etc.

If you read the dev's post on the BIS forum here (http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?133560-DayZ-Zombie-RPG-(Unofficial-Mod)-Alpha&p=2136969&viewfull=1#post2136969), you'll see that this is not quite the case. Apparently pretty much all of the game logic is external to ARMA2. It's not just Armascript interfacing with a database, but an external application doing the heavy lifting. So not really doable for us, since the devs aren't willing to release that stuff.

For any hopeful lurkers who already have vanilla ArmA 2, Operation Arrowhead is currently -50% off on GamersGate (http://www.gamersgate.co.uk/DD-ARMA2OA/arma-2-operation-arrowhead).

10-09-2012, 07:49 PM
I just read in a Greek news site that two Czechs, 28 and 33 years old, were arrested for espionage in Limnos (the island where Arma3 will take place). They found photos and videos of military installations on them. The two CZechs claimed they were working for BI and taking the material for Arma3. If they really work for BI, they must be stupid as near military installations there are usually huge signs saying that it is forbidden to take photos and video in that area. In any case, I think they re gonna have a hell of a time getting out of this mess.

10-09-2012, 08:19 PM
How long ago was that? Because it sounds like a pretty flimsy excuse if they were caught last week. All the material about A3 shows the islands in a pretty complete state, as far as I can tell.

10-09-2012, 09:46 PM
The article had today's date and was uploaded tonight so maximum a couple of days ago?

10-09-2012, 10:03 PM
If you are using chrome then here is a link to a Greek news site http://news247.gr/eidiseis/koinonia/eglima/sullhpsh_tsexwn_sth_lhmno_gia_kataskopeia.1923532. html
Couldn't find a statement from Bohemia though, maybe they have something on their forums?
But military espionage.. that's a pretty hefty charge they got on their hands.

11-09-2012, 02:55 PM
Yeah I didn't include link as automatic translation for Greek tends to be shit usually. The whole thing is a bit weird though, surely they must have seen the huge signs. Also I m sure BI would not model military installations in their game right? I thought there were problems like that with Google maps.

edit: forum link, not much info in their post though:

12-09-2012, 03:55 PM
well yea google translate isn't the most reliable translating tool :D
But to be honest about that military installation thing, I mean how much could be there? because comparing google earth pictures and BI released Lemnos map .. BI pretty much made up all these bases, because in real life they look like small villages and the only airport looks like an International airport. And sure some of the smaller villages like Katalakko look blurred, but then again A lot of the villages in Latvia are blurred also and that doesn't mean that they are military or anything.

P.S Google really did have trouble with the military? because to me every base I search is not blurred, and those are places like Camp Pendleton or Khandahar Airfield

12-09-2012, 04:05 PM
I thought Google maps had to blur out sensitive areas around the world. I never tried to search for them on it though.
I don't know how much there actually is, I tend to avoid anything to do with the military. The thing is, even if there is only one gun-rack on the whole island, they will press charges regardless of what the 2 guys claim. Because it's the army and it has to go like this! Stupid but true.

The "funny thing" in all that is that's happening on a demilitarized island.

14-09-2012, 01:22 AM
First of all I am interested in joining in on the Tactical Tuesday matches, but I have two quick questions. First, do I have to play for the entire time? For example if I only have time for two mission would that be okay? I do not intend to leave mid-mission, but I want to make sure I am allowed to leave if necessary.

Second, I read something about specialist squads...what are those exactly? Does that mean anti vehicle squads? Sniper squads? Etc.

Bonus question, if I have never played anything other than a few single player missions and Day Z can I join in?

14-09-2012, 01:48 AM
You can join for one mission, the first and third missions or all the missions. It's all up to you :)
Yupp. You've got Medium and Heavy MachineGun, Anti-Tank, Sniper/spotter, Drivers/Pilots, Engineers, Vehicles...

14-09-2012, 02:26 AM
^ Thanks I really appreciate the info. I think I will simply stick to the grunt role until I am comfortable...then maybe move up to spotter (I enjoy that role). :)

Black Mamba
14-09-2012, 02:26 AM
There's no such thing as quitting, soldier!
Well, there's Ebass.

Though just to clarify things, spotter's not a role you're likely to play every week. Mostly cause we rarely play with the sniper/spotter team. But do not hesitate to join, i'm sure you'll enjoy!

14-09-2012, 02:33 AM
Thanks, I guess you guys cycle through a whole bunch of missions then? How exactly does the setup process work normally? I understand mumble and I set myself up so I can join the different channels, but I am not sure which one to join once I join the server.

14-09-2012, 03:13 AM
If the session starts at 20:30 you should be on Mumble (and the server IMO) at (the latest) 20:25.
Mumble room is Games / ArmA CC whisper blocker / ArmA2 CO.

The host greets everyone welcome and loads up the mission which brings everyone to the "Slotting Screen".
There you (double?)click on your nick in the middle window and keep Mumble clear so the host can get on with the slotting.
The host will generally ask for a Commanding Officer(CO) first and then Squad Leaders(SL) and Fire Team Leaders(FTL) followed by special slots and stuff like that.
If you've got questions or just want to talk, write it in the chat.

Once the mission starts(or on the mapscreen depending on CO) the Squads will be assigned a Mumble channel/room, ie "Alpha to Alpha, Bravo and MMG to Bravo, Charlie and Pilots to Charlie, CO Medic and Mortar to HQ".
If you can't alt+tab and move yourself just ask to be moved and one of us with "move-rights" will do it for you.

14-09-2012, 12:32 PM
Thanks a ton, I will keep all of that in mind when I begin (I didn't want to slow everyone else down). :)

14-09-2012, 04:19 PM
No worries, just remember to ask if you've got a question.

14-09-2012, 05:58 PM
Thanks, I will. :)

14-09-2012, 09:29 PM
But don't ask iceraiser.

Question paradox.....!

Guys, check this out:

I found that on the Bohemia twitter.
It's really well done considering how the ARMA engine limits what you can actually do.

22-11-2012, 09:31 PM
ARMA2 Combined Ops is on Steam for -50% again, if you have any friends who have shown interest, let 'em know!
And then shanghai them into Tactical Tuesday and Folk Sunday. It's for their own good.

Those of you who are into recording gameplay footage may be interested to know that MSI Afterburner 2.3.0 is out, bringing a lot of new features, including multi-source audio recording. You should now be able to record both game audio and your mic with Afterburner. You can see the full list of changes here (http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=371238), along with a download link (http://www.guru3d.com/files_details/afterburner_download_msi.html).

Arma2:CO is on sale at GOG for $14.99 (9.29/€11.37)

Thats a pretty good price if you know any fencesitters. Probably the best price they will see, at least while A2 is relevant. While there is no word on the dayZ standalone, it can't be long - as for Arma3 itself, there is a pre-announcement of an announcement posted up on the BIS site today:

The new release window of Arma 3 has been set for 2013. Joris-Jan van 't Land: "I hope this update provides some answers regarding the status of the project. We’re currently sorting the specifics so we can deliver a more complete announcement at the beginning of next year."
