Hi all. I have this vague recollection of a game I got on one of those old '20 games collection' things I enjoyed playing on my PC many moons ago, and I can't for the life of me remember what it was called! So if any of you can work out what it is then you are a true and utter hero.

It was based in space and the largest part I remember from it was controlling a space fighter but more importantly, controlling the battle in some kind of top down strategy game. You could move your squadrons or ships around on this topdown 2D map.
You may even have had control of the main ship that the fighters launched from, although I'm not 100% sure about that.
Not that helpful I know so I hope my brief description may ring a few bells

Trying to find it is driving me nuts and it will probably be pretty terrible looking back. But not knowing is driving me nuts!

You're not thinking of Star Control, are you?

Top-down turned based strategy segments mixed in with realtime arcadey ship combat.

The sequel had a huge mothership you controlled (your 'freighter'?) and you wandered a world map looking for resources and fought battles using the same arcade mode.

No but that is an absolutely brilliant game that I haven't seen for a while! I may have to check it out.

These all look excellent and are going on my list of games to play in the near future.

The one thing I probably should have made clearer is that you controlled the fighters in a vaguely 3D view. Kind of like X-Wing or Space Rangers.
Space Rangers was also an ace game now I think about it and I may have to look it up. Damn I'm not going to get any work done for the next month with this list that's being built up

I really liked that game.

all i can say is X-COM if you manage to get your squad to Mars, but its pretty much earth-based

Some space games I remember, probably none of them itīs the one, but I like them ;)

Star Wars Rebellion (the 3D tactic battles)
Lightspeed - this was 3D, but you launched drones from the main ship
Master of Orion - the tactic battles

Imperium Galactica (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/337/ig1.png/)?

Do you know maybe when you played this game?

Yeah it would have been the late 90's sometime. It came on a 2 CD case with a selection of games on it. One of the games was about Go-karting. That's probably not very helpful.

I may have to check it out.

Star Crusader? It started as a space fighter sim, but later in the game you could send your pilots on additional missions.

The whole 'order squadrons on 2D map' part does also sound a bit like tactical combat in Starlord (but that's more of a strategy game with a crappy spacefighter bit thrown in).

I was about to say 'Freespace 2' untill I read the "on a 2d map part". If you are looking for similar games though, Freespace 2 does have space combat and commanding people, but not the map, unfortunately.

Wait... Is it Starshatter?

Homeworld? It has a 2D topdown map, and 3D view

Starlord! That's the one. Yes I remember the combat being pretty bad but you have at least alievated the massive frustration of not knowing.

Also, I now have a big list of probably better games to get stuck in to. Thanks everyone!
