View Full Version : Migrate Windows 7 installation to new HDD.

I'd been meaning to get a new HDD for a while now as my current one is very old and coughs and wheezes an awful lot. I got a Western Digital HDD and installed it nicely with no trouble, unfortunately during the Windows 7 installation, the setup said that my product key (which is a legal one from a genuine disk) is invalid. I read that this is because a new HDD counts as a separate machine and so the license won't work.

Is there anyway to backup my existing installation on my current drive and move the whole thing over to the new drive? I'm not great with these things so I'm a bit unsure what my options are. All I know is that I really don't want to have to go and buy a new copy of windows (especially as I'm hoping to get a new graphics card to replace my ATI Radaeon HD4670, so any ideas too on a decent ~100 sort of area replacement?). Would it be possible to clone the drive onto the new one?

Clone your disk using TrueImage (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Wu95L0LHW4) (or you can go with the unnecessarily long hipster tutorial (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3i4qHUaUhiM))

Wow, that sounded just like a bot!

Thanks Mashakos, looks simple enough. I'll give it a try.

Worked like a charm thank you. The trial version of TrueImage on the Acronis website doesn't support the disk cloning feature, but Western Digital have a free version on their website for users with their hard drives.
